Metropolis magazine is a well written magazine which can be read by both people just curious about design, architecture, and urban planning as well as those working in those fields. There is little to no insider jargon to put people off. Articles are interesting, conscientious and thought provoking. For ... an issue, it's a great deal. One of my favorite magazines. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous!
Ceramics Monthly offers articles featuring influential international ceramic artists, sumptuous photographs, and current information on residencies, fellowships and grants. There is a good representational mix of abstract and functional, pottery and sculpture.
Every issue I have had the delight of thumbing through has both pleased the senses and pushed the envelope of what ceramic arts can offer. I find even the advertisements have something to offer, great products, workshops etc. This Magazine is a very good buy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Magazine for All Dancers!
I think this magazine is perfect for anyone who is serious about dance. It covers a lot of different types of dance like Ballet, Jazz, and Hip hop.The "advice for dancers" column is very helpful and the advertisements (for dance shoes, workshops, auditions, equipment, etc.) are useful rather than annoying. Therefore, I would recommend this magazine to anyone who loves to dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE DANCE MAG!
Every Dancer would love Dance Magazine. The stories are intresting and cober all aspects of diffrent types pf dance. And the information given really helps dancers stay healthy and strong! I love Dance Magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe no one has reviewed this magazine!
I don't currently subscribe to Dance Magazine. But I was a subscriber for seven years some time ago and I have to take a moment to point out its merits here, especially since no one has done so.

For 76 years, this magazine has been publishing some of the finest commentary on dance of all types in America. There are some newer publications which cater more to the young dancer, the dance teacher who is not affiliated with any major tradition, and which deal with newer and more popular styles of dance. But this was the only dance magazine which was being published when I was a young dancer (I am now 26, and still a dancer).

I would read this magazine cover-to-cover every month. I pulled out countless gorgeous pictures of famous, classically trained dancers to paste on my walls from this magazine. For someone like me who studied dance history, this magazine has been marvelous. It regularly featured articles and interviews with emerging choreographers as well as pieces about those great dancers and choreographers we can all continue to learn from, like Diaghilev, Pavlowa, Ashton, Balanchine, Tharp, Cunningham, Taylor-- the list goes on and on.

The magazine features an advice column for dancers written by Linda Hamilton, PhD, as well as a section for younger dancers, thus catering to the competitive dancer, the auditioning dancer, etc. It reviews performances by nationally reknowned companies, as well as some lesser-known companies, on a monthly basis. It also lists schools and companies nationally, and has a section for classified ads in the back. On the whole the advertising in this magazine was less offensive when I took it than that which I have found in some other dance magazines, often featuring gorgeously trained young dancers and advertising summer programs and schools as well as dance-related products.

In short, this magazine is a highly intelligent publication which has a real sense of the history of dance, particularly American dance, that I have not found in any other publication. The very existence of the the archived photos of dancers you may never see anywhere else that they regularly bring back into circulation is alone enough to truly make the reader feel connected with the world of dance. For me, a young dancer growing up in a somewhat rural area, this magazine connected me with dancers everywhere, helped me to articulate what it was I loved about this beautiful art.

I will note, however, that when I subscribed to this magazine Clive Barnes was the Senior Editor, and has now left the magazine. I have not read the magazine since he left, so I cannot attest to its quality since then. Check it out for yourself-- the magazine's website:

5-0 out of 5 stars If Martha Stewart were French, she'd publish this magazine
If you read French or not, this is a wonderful magazine. The crafts include embroidery, collage, knitting, tapestry, cooking and more. The fashion and style areas give novel ideas for using junk like funky-labeled tin cans for a beach house door curtain, making mirror frames from bottle caps. Think sort of, Martha Stewart with a French twist. The trimestrial issues have a holiday or seasonal theme, Christmas, Spring, Summer, Autumn.

Every issue has an abecedaire (sampler) in a clever type of embroidery. Usually there is a knitted pattern, most often for babies but not always. There is usually a travelogue to an exotic place, with great photos. And you can get a long long advance look at US style trends--for example, Marie Claire Idees featured toile and transfer printed china years before it got to be a hot trend in the US. I save every issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas and Photos
I love this magazine! I was in Paris and found it in the airport and couldn't put it down on the plane. It's full of pictures and ideas and instructions in the back, not lots of wordy fluff or advertisements, but just packed with beautiful, inspiring ideas. I subscribe to Martha Stewart Living and I'd have to say this beats it, however, it is in French and it's pricier to order. It was cheaper in France but I was very happy to find that Amazon offered it since I didn't think I'd see another issue again without going overseas, I think the price is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A French Idea!
I love this magazine. The presentation is so lovely and refreshing. I took French in school, but not enough to follow the instructions given for the projects. So, It's purely "follow the pictorial directions." I wish there were some way that this beautiful magazine could be captioned in some way. As part of it's charm is in the french language.

5-0 out of 5 stars five stars
it's a wonderfull magazine, full of ideas. Special for toddlers and little girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Smocking & Embroidery Subscription to get!
Australian Smocking & Embroidery is by far, the best of the smocking/embroidery magazines that are available today. Not only are the projects and pictures glorious, but the patterns are included with each project. Most issues offer a variety of sizes and styles for using smocking, but focus mainly on children's clothing. These magazines become valuable after time, as some issues as they are out of print, will double and triple in value. This is a much sought after magazine in the finer cloth/heirloom shops. Inside each issue, there will be a step by step lesson of a technique used in a project. Smocking and Embroidery plates abound, and you can order the kit to make the projet from Country Bumpkin in Australia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Unique magazine, it's one-of-a kind
This magazine is a one-of-a-kind, it has the most unique and beautiful patterns for smocking and embroidery. Each issue offers many gorgeous infant, children's and ladies patterns. This magazine has inspired me to create many beautiful gowns that I know will become family heirlooms. There is nothing else like it. It has become a must for my sewing library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best feature is . . . . . . . . . .
As a subscriber to McCalls Quilting for the past three years, the feature I enjoy best is the table of contents page picturing the quilts in miniature. Then turning to the actual instructions page, I see if it is within my skill level with the rating listed for every quilt project in the issue. That is the best feature and the variety of patterns in each issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine
This is a great magazine because it offers a great number of patterns in each issue and it has a nice balance of background information and interesting articles. Each pattern and technique offered in this magazine is complete with concise directions, often including pictures and diagrams. This magazine is well worth buying and even subscribing to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learners aren't intimidated by this magazine
I am particularly fond of the McCall's format for this magazine. I am a beginning quilter and sometimes I am overwhelmed by some of the more "art" quilting mags. McCall's staff explain projects and techniques simply and often provide pattern pieces with the price of the magazine. Lovely photos give me color ideas and teaches me about the how the same quilt pattern can be completely altered by using different types of fabric. ... Read more

In my search for craft magz I have found this one to be full of what is needed and what was previously unknown. There is no other craft mag so devoted to spinning. the full color pages and ads help out those who are in areas devoid of spinner aid.
I could go on but only those interested in spinning would get what they realy whant. Interweve Press has some of the best craft magz. Including weaving, beading, and knitting.

4-0 out of 5 stars ancient craft
This is a beautiful magazine. It is of course focused on the art of spinning.Transforming the raw wool of a sheep into yarn by spinning it,usually with the help of a tool (a spindle or a spinning wheel).Although a spinning magazine,it also covers other topics that will interest anybody with a love for textiles:weaving,dyeing,knitting,etc.etc.
It is very detailed in techniques and has beautiful color photos. It is also a serious magazine offering interesting information. It is not full of corny or stupid things to do.Although you might not share the taste of some authors, you will enjoy their knowledge and the quality of their work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Numero Uno
If you earn your living as an artist, or aspire to do so, Art Calendar is essential, and should be the number one magazine on your subscription list.
The articles are all informative, and cover a wide range of topics that relate to art and its marketing. Subjects like legal issues (copyright laws, etc.) for instance, can be very complex, and are described in an understandable way, using English instead of a lot of legal terms.

Regular contributor Jack White usually writes about what he knows best, which is selling art, and keeping your outlook positive. A well respected artist and author, Jack is quite an art team with his successful painter wife, Mikki Senkarik, and I never miss his upbeat take on the "art biz".
Another regular is Steve Meltzer "The Photo Guy", with lots of tips on photographing your work. You can't take advantage of many of the available opportunities without good photographs and slides of your art, and Steve will tell you how to do it.

"The Listings" is the most comprehensive list of upcoming juried exhibits, festivals, grants/fellowships, publishing opportunities, and much more, to be found anywhere in print. Thanks to the dilligent skill and hard work of publisher and editor-in-chief Carolyn Blakeslee Proeber, along with her husband David and their staff, we can get all this information under one cover.
Art Calendar also encourages artists to submit slides and photographs to their magazine for possible use as illustrations (details on the exact procedure for this are in the magazine). There are many black and white images on the inside pages, and a full color cover. I'm proud to say that one of my pieces was on the February 2003 cover, so I know that having one's work published in this magazine can actually happen !
I cannot emphasize enough how important this publication is to the life of an artist. Do not hesitate to subscribe, it will be well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine
I buy this magazine on the newsstand whenever I come across it, and I've rarely been disappointed. The magazine focuses squarely on contemporary sculpture and installation art - which means lots of minimalism, abstraction, and innovative use of materials. Fans of more traditional art may be left cold, but this sort of thing is right up my alley.

Some of the more interesting things I've come across in Sculpture include the "light sculptures" of James Turrell, a Donald Judd retrospective, and an interview with Maya Lin about her earthworks and installations.

The design and photography is all first-rate, and although the commentary does get a bit too eggheaded for my tastes, I still count this among my favorite magazines. Recommended to any enthusiast of contemporary art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Numismatics, come out of the closet
Weekly issue in tabloid form.

This is the publication you have been waiting for. It is not just some sort of glorified price list. You will find out the latest news in the coin world and articles to enhance your existing collection. Find out where the trade shows are. You can also find this at trade shows; however is nice to have a copy on the off times when you are saving for the next show. You will get the latest information on people that influence coin collecting.
If you are interested in market trends they can be found here also.

There is also an online counter part so you can get the latest news through e-mail.

The only warning is that you will not be able to part with your older copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared to the collector/investor so lots of great data!
I subscribe to this because I like the fact that it has all of the up to date info on US mint programs, machinations, mintage reports and auction gossip with results, etc. It also has a very active classifieds section and super coin dealer ads. In addition there is the obligatory spec piece on overlooked and undervalued coins/coin segments, etc. which probably don't amount to a hill of beans actually but always get one to thinking about the particular coin/coin segment highlighted in the particular article. An oddly compelling part of the magazine is the letters section where very opinionated people tend to bash each other over the course of two or three issues. It is a lively and engaging part of the magazine-newsweekly that would be sorely missed if it were ever cut out. Also there is often a guest opinion or two from some of the coin world's heavy weights and/or notables. Every other issue or so there is an insert that lists either upcoming auctions and coin shows, or a table of inflated coin values (per all coin magazine tradition). On price alone, I highly recommend this but also if you like the cult/star trek aspect of coin collecting this is certainly a must-subscribe to periodical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for collectors!
N. News is a great source for news and up-to-date collecting information for coin collectors. Also offers free ads for subscribers! ... Read more
