3-0 out of 5 stars Cool to look at, but when it comes to reading...
... I don't know. I guess my major complaint is that, if you aren't already privy to the latest in fashion, music, etc (like the other reviewer said, and he's quite right, this is a very hip magazine), then you'll probably feel pretty lowbrow. They don't really try to familiarize you with what's cool like GQ or DETAILS does; you're either in or you're not. However, it's definitely better than FLAUNT, which seems to be trying to imitate BLACK BOOK, in that the photography isn't as pretentious and the articles have a little more substance.

My last (subjective) complaints: the covers usually have celebrities I sort of consider to be overexposed (Jay Z, Adrien Brody, et al), and this is the magazine that Norman Mailer's stupid son/grandson (I don't remember which) John Buffalo Mailer wrote a piece in that has since catapulted him into HIGH TIMES fame (nepotism is never cool).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hippest Mag Around
Starting as a quartely publication, Black Book has vaulted to bi-monthly releases and the highest level a magazine can aspire to reach. The publishers have their finger on a pulse that pumps literary, fashion, music, entertainment and art style onto eye catching pages. I haven't missed an issue and never will. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Name says it all
If you need a quilt real quick, then this magazine is for you! I've made several of the quilts in Quick Quilts and have found them to be very easily put together due to the magazines clear and straight forward directions. There is always a lovely variety in the number of patterns and the techniques used within. Quick Quilts breaks down difficult design patterns and shows you how to make them up easily and fast! (I made a Double Wedding Ring wall hanging in an issue from 2 years ago and I finished it with in a couple of weeks.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a wonderful magazine
If you're interested in photography and have an open mind about photographs, you should check this magazine out. Each issue contains at least one prose 'article', none of which has ever impressed me. But fortunately, the magazine's content is 99% photography and it quite often impresses me. Though the photographic content is not always consistently engaging, I've yet to see an issue in which at least one of the featured photographers doesn't expand my notion of what's beautiful or what can be done with photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most beautiful photo magazine being published
I wait with longing for this beautiful magazine to show up on my door step and have collected every issue since #3.

Everything about the magazine inspires me - the photography, the writing, the design and the printing.

The staff has a great eye for new talent and does a wonderful job of balancing the emerging artists with the more established talent.

This magazine showcases fine art photography like no other publication currently on the market and a subscription to this magazine is a must-have for any one seriously interested in photography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice to be told now!
Great magazine, but it would have been nice to be told when I originally subscribed (from a voucher in the magazine) that subscriptions were not available to Australia. Took my money and only received on issue on time and another one or two many months later. Thanks heaps :(

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled "People & Personalities"
Compared to "Art & Auction," "Art @ Antiques" is fairly breezy and superficial. Too many articles profile wealthy socialite collectors or handsome artists whose work is mostly decorative--in the Leroy Neiman league. (One annual feature profiles "The top 100 collectors" which is, of course, nothing but gush.)The paid advertisements mostly feature artists of the post-Grandma Moses school. If you want to sharpen your taste and enlarge your knowledge of the art world, this is not the magazine to start with. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Things Better
There is no lack of woodworking magazines for the budding (or advanced) craftsman. Each has a particular audience for its contents. For someone looking for the right magazines to subscribe to this can be a confusing process. Especially when the potential reader isn't precisely sure what they want themselves.

Workbench Magazine is, as the subtitle indicates, concerned with 'woodworking to improve your home.' The implication that the focus is on carpentry and basic cabinetry rather than complex design and joinery is correct. But don't make the mistake of thinking that that means that the projects and articles offered are in any way simple or humdrum. Recent features include a complex swing out pantry, mobile garage organizers and a simple, but very nicely made garden storage bench.

Technical articles tend to center on hand tools, finishing, and basic techniques, but don't be surprise when you discover that this also includes making a panel-raising router table and a cabinet door project using the same. Or an in depth report of a joinery machine. The focus is not on the tools though, but on what might be done with them.

Regular Departments include questions & answers, tips & techniques, tools & equipment, and craftsmanship. There are no surprises here, but Workbench is clearly aimed at the competent craftsperson that is interested in home improvement and doesn't mind an undertaking that is a bit of a stretch. One who isn't in the mood to spend a fortune on sawdust makers either. Solid practical writing marks all the articles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really it should get 4 1/2 stars...
I regularly read all of the major woodworking magazines and this one has begun to grow on me quite a bit. Granted, for the subject matter it is not as highbrow as Fine Woodworking or Fine Homebuilding, nor is it as simple and practical as something like Family Handyman.

What this magazine IS is an attempt to provide a balance between the various interests of us homeowner-woodworkers, whether we happen to be weekend warrior newbies or knowledgable home improvement veterans. Simply put, most woodworkers are not only passionate about building woodworking projects but also about improving our homes. I applaud this magazine for doing a good job of "bridging" this span of interest.

Now for the nitty-gritty. I find the writing in Workbench to be very good, the photography and illustrations are clear, the shop tips submitted by fellow readers are always a highlight, and by including projects for the home and yard right alongside finer furniture projects, there is always something in every issue for nearly every interest. Also, I don't care who you are or how long you have been doing this stuff, there are always new/more tools to consider and the quality tool reviews found in Workbench are always welcome!

Ignore the naysayers and pick up a copy of this one to see for yourself. I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Beginers Only
This overpriced magazine is for the weekend warriors who would like to start a new hobby. There is nothing wrong with this, we all started somewhere. However, one can only stand for so much of new tool ratings and how to build the same old challege-less pieces of furniture. Please don't waste your money. Try Fine Woodworking, woodworking, or even Popular woodworking. You will be greatful you did, and will be on the road to becoming an expert weekend warriors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Home Improvement Magazine
I've been very satisfied with Workbench Magazine. It has project plans, ideas, and tips for the home, workshop, and even the yard. From my personal dealings with their customer support department, the rest of the magazine world has a lot to learn about taking care of customers. If I could have only one home improvement magazine, Workbench would be my first choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars loveing pointe
Oh My Gosh! I love this magazine! It really brings the dance world into perspective. I love to hear what some of the professionals have to say about their dancing lives. My favorite articles are the ones on the problems with pointe shoes and how to overcome them. Realistic, honest, great advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars oh my gosh-- this magazine is incredible!!
I have been looking for a ballet or dancing magazine forever and I found pointe and am really satisfied. It offers hundreds of wonderful apparel items and lots of advice, plus interveiws with famous dancers. Its definately ideal for the dancer or figure skater. It is also a great gift to give someone who dances or figure skates. Pointe rocks!!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an OK little magazine
I haven't found tons of stuff I want to make in it, though, and a some of the patterns that are published in this magazine, I've found for free on the net or as give-aways from yarn & thread companies! So...I don't think I'll subscribe again, but it was a nice little mag to get in the mail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine except
they could include more clothing patterns that are easy to follow. Most of the projects are for children's toys and doily's. For a prolific crocheter I suppose it's best to develop your own patterns because you will quickly get bored with the scant clothing items included in the magazine.

This magazine prompted me to crochet years ago. I saw a pattern for a crochet bikini that I had to duplicate. I did it but I took it apart & never made another one. So I suppose I owe my crocheting career to this magazine. It's a shame they don't include more innovative clothing designs with different types of yarns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of variety in a small magazine.
This little magazine is full of a variety of beautiful, charming and useful patterns from seasonal decorations, doilies and afghans to very pretty clothing and accessories. The patterns don't employ lots of special stitches so it's easy going for just about anyone. Having checked out nearly every crochet magazine currently offered, I'd say this is well worth the subscription price for all but those who want only specialty and/or really challenging projects. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Airbrush Action - A must for airbrushers around the world
Aibrush Action is dedicated to the art form for all levels of skill. All users of airbrushes will find good info in every magazine. I have been airbrushing for 5 years and I have subscribed to the magazine for three. I like the publication because it has product reviews, "hands-on how to" articles, excelant trade member submisions, heads-up on new trends and finally the ppl that write the magazine are PRACTICING airbrushers.

The zine has evolved over the years and is just as hard core airbrushing as it was "way back when" as it is now. The presentation of the articles just gets a bit slicker each year. The product reveiws are honest. If somebody sends them a pice of junk then they right a nice "nasty gram" about it even if that junk is advertised in that very months issue! The editers have grit! And, if they strike gold the share the wealth, too. They are not stingy with good info.

Once a year the zine has a projecter, airbrush, aircompressor, paint product cross reference info chart. I.e. if your into this then you might want to check this configuration out. It'very handy to have. I have switched from one brand of acrylic paints to another with much appreciated results. (Both brands were good, just one had a better aplication towards what I wanted to accomplish at the time)

Any way- the skinny on this subject is: before you buy a set up if you are a novice, then buy this zine first before you spend alot of cash. If you make a living in the A.B. world then you need this publication so you can make more cash. This zine represents ppl from all areas of airbrushing, from fine art illustraters to ultra cool death metal bikes. Heck, some ppl get it just for the cool art in it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Subscription I Keep Renewing
If you sew anything, quilts, clothing, crafts, embroidery, you will enjoy this publication. I have had a subscription for nearly six years, ever since I began sewing clothes for my family and friends.
Sew News is packed with great ideas, tips, and tidbits on various subjects (i.e notched collars, working with silk, the history of scissors). Online resources and mailorder sources are also included with each issue. Sometimes, free patterns are offered as well.
The only thing which bothered me this year was when they changed the binding from a thicker, substantial binding to the thinner, stapled type. It annoyed me because I save these in my sewing library for later reference and sometimes they can get damaged a little in the mail. However, I strongly recommend applying for a subscription because these mags are tough to find in stores and, of course, the sub rate is better. ... Read more
