Value for Money

A great magazine
As a design student currently in college, it's hard to find any current publications directed toward our questions and highlighting the work of our peers. Hit or miss
"Knit N Style" has been around for a long time--I remember picking it up when I first began knitting seriously several decades ago. It has some nice patterns, but overall I find it the least useful of the major knitting magazines. I don't know about its current policies, but it used to be a vehicle by which the yarn manufacturers promoted their wares. On numerous occasions, the patterns published in "Knit N Style" were pattterns previously published as leaflets by the manufacturer of the yarn suggested. I don't know if this continues to be their policy, and they have made attempts to upgrade the editorial content with informational features. Nonetheless the magazine's quality remains lower than that of Knitters, Vogue Knitting, etc. My advice is to check it out at the newstand and if you see a pattern you like, then buy it.

No good Patterns - ever
I have about two to three years of Knit N Style (2001 - 2003)Magazines, and lately have spent a lot of time looking through them for a Cardigan Pattern to Knit for myself. I haven't found a single one. All of the patterns have serious faults: Drop Shoulders, (totally unacceptable) little or no armhole, neck and/or shoulder shaping. Most sleeves have little or no cap. And, worst of all, they are all made in five or more pieces. Haven't any of these "designers" heard of Elizabeth Zimmerman? I was going to give the lot to the library, but am wondering if perhaps the trash might be a better place. If you are trying to attract new knitters from among younger people, why don't you teach them the PROPER way to knit? Young people are smarter than you think.

I have subscribed to this magazine for the last year. There are good quality photos, hand & machine knitting instructions, and schematics for every pattern. However, instructions are sometimes on the same page, a few pages later, or in the back of the magazine--not consistent and sometimes challenging to find. It would be nice if the editor would have these in a consistent location. ... Read more

IN PRAISE OF B&W Photography and the Printing Art.
I was on vacation in Miami last December and picked-up a copy of this magazine-B&W.It is the best photographic magazine I have ever seen or read.It is the best tribute to black and white photography as an art form. The prinitng quality is equally as superb and highly compliments the new technology in printing.It gives new meaning to the words photo finish. Unfortunately the magazine is only avaliable in the United States so I have had to subscribe using my son's address in Miami. It has inspired me to further improve my work as an artist,photographer, who considers black and white photography as the only true art form and dismisses digital "photography" as not being photography. My favorite photo magazine
Every issue of this magazine provides a great collection of black and white imagery. I like this magazine in particular for two reasons, the focus is on excellent images, not advertising, reviews, or articles, and what they do choose to print they print very well. The quality of the paper and printing is truly excellent. The subject matter covers most of the traditional photo styles, landscapes, nudes, impromptu slice-of-life pieces, still-life, abstract, etc. Generally every issue contains an interview with a pro and his/her work. There is also a large section of "space for hire" for photographers to submit samples of their work for sale or representation (note: very pricey to submit work, and here's where the image quality fluctuates wildly). I have found this magazine to be an idea-generator and photographic inspiration. I know I'll want to hang on to issues to enjoy for many years. ... Read more

Sheer beauty
I've been reading Doll Costuming for over a year and think it is excellent with high quality graphics and well written feature articles. It is a pleasure just to browse through and for the more adventurous, each issue includes 1 to 3 pull out patterns as well as directions for accessories. The patterns are not easy and shouldn't be, since the costumes are elaborate but they are so well explained that you can follow them. The magazine covers about 2 hundred years of doll costuming and has a variation of sizes within each time period. ... Read more
