Perfect for anyone in Graphic Design or Advertising
This is one of the bibles for anyone in graphic design, advertising, illustration or photograhy. It digs deep into industry trends, features portfolios of upcoming industry stars, and is a must for anyone who takes their craft seriously. While the issues are great, their Regional Design Annual is the must-buy issue every year. It really lets you know who the cream of the crop are. Just flipping through it will make you better at what you do (and you'll even stop using hackneyed phrases like "cream of the crop"). ... Read more

The only magazine that I keep back copies of!
As a professional graphic designer and illustrator, I read a lot of the trade magazines, but Communication Arts is the only one I keep back copies of. I have had a subscription to this magazine since my art school days and I still look forward to receiving it in the mail. The magazine is beautifully designed with clean type and the feature articles are always interesting. It is well worth the cost of subscription. Just get it! You won't be sorry.

Important to know what you want
If you are looking for a design mag with flip-through layouts or edgy underground images, this is probably not the publication for you. If you're on the search for pretty pictures and design inspiration, you'd probably like one or two of the annuals (i.e., Design, Illustration, Photography or Interactive), but not a whole subscription.

Now then, if you don't mind reading and are looking for contemporary and practical insights into the world of commercial print design, CA comes highly recommended. Its value very nearly overshadows its cost, and if you can't afford it, it's well worth harassing family members for a gift subscription.

The essential tool for working commercial artists
As a working illustrator and designer, I have been a subscriber to CA since 1983, and own copies that date back to my art school days in the late 70's. I consider this magazine an invaluable tool for maintaining an edge in the ever-changing commercial art market. Not only does CA provide in depth interviews with the top design agencies, illustrators, designers and photographers working today, but it helps me keep up to date with current trends in design.

The five regular issues are great, but the three annuals that present a comprehensive gallery of the very best in photography, illustration, design and media for each year have provided me with untold inspiration, practical ideas for problem solving, and have helped me to strive for greater creativity. As a reference tool for style and trends, CA is always featuring the absolute best the market has to offer.

Printed on heavy, gloss stock of near archival quality, every issue is a treasure that more than justifies the price. While each new issues serves as a benchmark for what is happening in the commercial art world, the old issues become time capsules that never seem to loose their appeal. I still delight in reviewing articles and images from 20+ years ago.

CA is a good, but slightly pricey diversion for anybody casually interested in art, photography and advertising. It is a GREAT and invaluable tool for every working professional commercial artist, and worth every penny spent tenfold.

Expensive Eye-Candy
Visually stunning mag, frequently used for inspiration by graphic designers. Fixated on "new" and "award-winning", at the expensive of "good" design or socially-relevant design. The articles on professional practice are sometimes shallow, sometimes obvious. The style guide for people who manufacture desire.

Great for beginners especially
This magazine is targeted to newbies, do-it-yourselfers who may not have much formal design training, and those who are looking for quick, elegant solutions to perennial layout and design chestnuts.

Created for both Mac and PC users, the magazine provides how-tos in design and layout, giving instruction for multiple programs (so, not just how to do something in Illustrator, but also Freehand and Corel, for instance.) It also provides good foundation info on the design/printing/production process. And its annual Better-Than-Ever issue is usually very good.

I would especially strongly recommend it for those on tight budgets, or who design a wide range of communications vehicles in addition to their other, non-design job responsibilities. ... Read more

the most inspiring book availibe
If you are open minded and passionate. Flaunt is for you. The most amazing photoshoots, with a vision that only a freak can relate too (in a good way). the creativity is always has a unique flavor with a new twist monthly.

Such a cool magazine!!!
GREAT photos! Cool little articles, though i would really only get this magazine for the excellent photography because it doesn't really focus on mass-media current events that you'd find in, say, a People or an Us Weekly. It has an upscale feel to it, and you can tell that there is a true vision behind this product. Anyone that is into the arts, particularly coiture, modeling, and photography would love this magazine for its visual energy and eccentricity.

Strange, but refreshing
I saw this magazine while browsing a local bookstore and it was a magazine that stood out for some reason...I picked it up and flipped through a few pages and came across an article on Maggie Gyllanhall. I had recently watched "Secretary," and I liked her, so I bought it. I'm not much for fashion magazines but this is much different from others like Vogue. After buying my first Flaunt magazine, I wanted to buy more, but needless to say, the bookstore has not gotten any in for a long time...:( This magazine will be great for readers who are bored with the same crap churned out in every other magazine out there...

Cool before it was cool to be cool
This magazine offers a glimpse into what it means to be truly hip. It also has a little nudity in each issue, so you really can't go wrong.

Great Style/Fashion/Design Magazine
The magazine is really great. Before i started reading flaunt i read surface* and wallpaper. Flaunt has more pop culture articles that I find more interesting than those in other magazines which seem like they are just made for rich people. Another good thing is that they avoid having too many articles about Europe and "Spring Break-like" travel articles which are reused in other magazines over-and-over. Another good magazine to read is Architectual Record. "One" was a really good magazine like flaunt, i don't even know if its still published anymore. ... Read more

Brilliant!
Although it may be slim, this magazine is filled to the brim with great ideas and tips on creating great looking materials. I would highly recommend this subscription! Also check out the book by John McWade.

Best. Magazine. EVER!
No ads and relatively small, but packed chock-a-block with plenty of practical design solutions backed by REAL design theory -- worth every penny! If you're looking to refresh your designs, seek ideas, and learn from the best, look no further. This is an entire communication design course in a magazine. I've been getting it for years, and this is by far, THE BEST design magazine on the market today. Period. Glad to see it's back!

Strong writing with balance of issues
Metropolis magazine is a well written magazine which can be read by both people just curious about design, architecture, and urban planning as well as those working in those fields. Great graphic design magazine.
If you are into graphic arts, this magazine is a must have in your list of subscriptions. It's worth it especially for interviews and articles about artists from all over the world. Photoshop User magazine lacks a little on that standpoint, and How magazine is more focused on design companies than on digital artists.

Design Graphics also contains techniques for Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. If you already have a subscription to Photoshop User, or Computer Arts, fear not, as somehow (sheer luck, or agreement between the editors), the techniques rarely overlap from one magazine to the other.

Part of the magazine is set aside for reviews of new software and hardware, with lots of side by side comparisons. One could argue that the reviews are a little dry, much like a technical description of the product, without an opinion. I personally like it better when the reviewer gives me his/her opinion about what they are reviewing. But I guess that's a matter of taste.

Another small "problem" with this magazine, is that it is published in Australia. If you live anywhere else in the world, once it makes it to your house, the news it contains are slightly old. Not a big deal, and surely nothing the publisher can do anything about. :)

Conclusion: Design Graphics is more art oriented than it is industry oriented, and that's definitely a nice change that sets it apart from its competitors. ... Read more
