5-0 out of 5 stars IN PRAISE OF B&W Photography and the Printing Art.
I was on vacation in Miami last December and picked-up a copy of this magazine-B&W.It is the best photographic magazine I have ever seen or read.It is the best tribute to black and white photography as an art form. The prinitng quality is equally as superb and highly compliments the new technology in printing. It gives new meaning to the words photo finish. Unfortunately the magazine is only avaliable in the United States so I have had to subscribe using my son's address in Miami. It has inspired me to further improve my work as an artist, photographer, who considers black and white photography as the only true art form and dismisses digital "photography" as not being photography. Norris Hall,Belmopan, Belize, Central America.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite photo magazine
Every issue of this magazine provides a great collection of black and white imagery. I like this magazine in particular for two reasons, the focus is on excellent images, not advertising, reviews, or articles, and what they do choose to print they print very well. The quality of the paper and printing is truly excellent. The subject matter covers most of the traditional photo styles, landscapes, nudes, impromptu slice-of-life pieces, still-life, abstract, etc. Generally every issue contains an interview with a pro and his/her work. There is also a large section of "space for hire" for photographers to submit samples of their work for sale or representation (note: very pricey to submit work, and here's where the image quality fluctuates wildly). I have found this magazine to be an idea-generator and photographic inspiration. I know I'll want to hang on to issues to enjoy for many years. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Outstanding
Most photo magazines handle analog and digital photography as separate entities. This magazine is the perfect bridge between the two media. Besides that, its articles are very insightful, with a more artistic and professional tone than most photo magazines, but without falling into a snobbish attitude. Furthermore, they avoid that commercial point of view that hampers a good photo magazine. The only thing I regret is the lack of technical information about the pictures they show. Anyway, each issue is a pleasure to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great shots!
This is a 'small' magazine in size but large in terms of inspiration. The photographs and the stories are not so much focused on technique but more on the artistic values and philosophy of photography. Each issue includes an interview with an artist as well as one or more sets of photographs. The publishers are deeply involved in photography and often contribute their own images. Like good art, the photographs show that good photographers can turn ordinary objects into interesting subjects. Hence, the inspirational value of the publication.

In addition to 'standard' magazine fearures, the publishers often offer the ability to purchase limited edition prints like the current offer for some of Bradford Washburn's mountain photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars LENSWORK A B&W GEM
Lenswork is a gem. I adore the three layer black and white printing process used to display this art photograph. The tones and details are so rich and vibrant. A unique joy just for the photos. All in black and white so if you are intrested in color you won't find any here.
There is plenty of new and retrospective photograpy sections. There are three to four photographers work in each issue. Always something very new and something wonderful from the past.

The magaizine has great interviews of photograpers and essays on art and photograpy. There is not real techincal ideas about photography, but many ideas and philospophical challenges to jump start your photographic imagination. It is an inspiring work.

Also it is not subsidized by advertising. Only advertisment you will see is print sales from the magizine itself and a subscription application. So it is selling it own ideas not some slotch that drives you to by a product. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars best general photo trade mag out there
Photo District News is the best general photography trade magazine currently being published. I like how they feature the work of up and coming photographers as well as interviewing key players in the advertising and design communities. It gives a wide view of the industry, outside of the usual technical reviews of equipment, which I find refreshing. The staff hasn't changed much over the years so I do wonder how fresh of a perspective the Sr. Staff has of the industry - but they have added some new columns to the magazine recently which gives me hope that the editorial team is not getting stale.

My main criticism of the magazine is that the industry news they present is frequently outdated when it lands in my mailbox. I'd recommend using their website to get more up to date information if you are worried about timeliness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best photography magazine in the world!
Thank God for the French! This magazine is the best photography magazine in the world. It contains some of the best photography that I have ever seen. Photographs that you will most likely not see in any American photography magazine. This magazine, unlike every American photography magazine that I know of, has absolutely no fear of nudity. Do you speak French? This magazine is written in French. Please do not let this bother you. Photography is the universal language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good techical and gear overview
Good magazine if you like to do equipment comparisons and film comparisons. As well there is photo tips that are practical and intresting.

Almost every photograph has a story behind it. What equipment was used how the photographer succeeded and failed, what they would have done better, what were the limits of the situations. I like that all aspects from macro to landscapes are covered here, as well as a lot on candid and non candid photography.

This magazine has improved both my color and BW photos.

As well all ranges of photographers contribute from the beginer to the most advanced expert. There is a lot on digital dark room which I like. As well there is alot on composition including lens and exposure trick for specific kinds of shots.

Great photos too. The photo contest always amaze me. As well as there photo challenges were poeple go out and shoot and then analyze the photos. Amatures and experts shooting some great stuff.

The magazine is a little anglo centeric and at times can be a little bit elementry in some of its guide. BUT they always have good recommendations on new equipment and great ideas. Plus sometimes we for get the basics and we need to be reminded how to do things that we alread learned.

Well worth the money, beautiful color and BW reproductions

1-0 out of 5 stars Use to be the best, now it's at the bottom.
Throughout the 90's, this was THE best photography magazine on the planet. I probably have every issue from the 90's and for many years had a subscription. I practically learned photography through this mag. However, since the calendar turned to the 2000's, this magazine has slipped considerably, almost off the face of the photographic scene. I dropped my subscription, and now I am lucky if I buy one issue a year if something I see in it catches my eye at the newstand.

It use to be bigger and packed to the gills with photography info, reviews, and tons of photos. I use to take weeks combing over each issue, now I fly through it in about an hour and there is not much there for later reference. It's a shame how over and above all other photo books this use to be, and how low it has finally become.

They tried to change the format and look of the mag around 2001 and it looked horrible. They quickly changed it again in a few months, but it was too late. Another horrible thing is that most of their contests now exclude all foreign residents. They use to allow worldwide entry to their photo contests, now just about all of them are limited to UK residents only.

What a shame. I use to love this magazine. Check out these other 2 UK mags (which have always been better than any US photo mag) Amateur Photography or Photography Monthly. The latter is actually published by a former Practical Photography technical editor, and he seems to better capture Practical Photography's old ways. It's a much better read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rescource
I found Practical Photography when I was in England and found it to be the best pubication available for the advanced non-professional photograher. They have an wonderful feature in every publication, a critique of submitted photographs. Costly here in the states to get your hands on an issue, but more often than not it is an excellent read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but pricey
This is one of the best amateur photography magazines from the UK. I always buy it when I go there, which is 3 or 4 times per year. Not too many ads. Lots of photos and articles on technique. The magazine is well laid out and clearly written. There are some reviews (not too many) of new equipment, which seem to be more objective than some popular US photo magazines.

At ($$$) per issue the price is a bit stiff. And some of the articles are repetitious from year to year.

Overall, this is one of the better magazines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for large format photographers of all levels
I am sorry to see that the previous reviewer had a problem with his subscription. I always get my issues, although they may show up at the bookstore before they are end up in my mailbox. But it's a small publisher, so some hick-ups are to be expected.
The magazine itself is always a joy and a great resource. The articles are well written, and the quality of the illustrations is excellent. It is always an inspiration to see what can be done in large format bbeyond the obvious calendar photography. One thing that sets this magazine apart from many other photo rags is the fact that they also review older products that aren't sold anymore by their advertizers. Large format technology (aside from digital) is fairly mature, and there is no reason why a 40 year old lens shouldn't do a good job for your needs. View Camera tells you which lenses are great finds, and which cameras will do the job.
I can only recommend that people interested in LF photography read a couple of issues of View Camera. They will come away with a good impression of what is involved, and if they finally step up to large format, they will be able to save a bundle by knowing what the used LF market has to offer

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Received

5-0 out of 5 stars really is the best
I love turing people on to this magazine, they always love it, like I do!
Nature's Best is amazing. The design is incredible, the photography is never short of stunning. I like it better than National Geographic! Plus the company does great thigns for environmental protection and awarenwess. A beautiful magazine and great cause.
Anyone who loves beautiful photographs (without cluttered ads) and an allover high quality publication needs to check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showcasing Some of the Best in Nature Photography
Nature's Best is a quarterly magazine (4 issues per year) dedicated to showcasing the best in nature photography today. It's format is slightly larger than standard at 9x11 inches. Each issue is around 100 pages in length with almost no advertising. In addition to subscriptions, the magazine is funded by a handful of corporate sponsors, who account for the only advertising in the magazine, and that only amounts to a few pages.

Most of the space in Nature's Best is dedicated to photographs. Most of the photos are pretty large, some even spanning two pages. The paper is of a quality comparable to National Geographic and depicts the color and clarity of the photographs very well. Nature's Best seems to be dedicated to color nature photography; I have never seen a black-and-white photograph in the magazine. But I don't know if their policies actually prohibit black-and-white. A typical issue has 5 feature articles, which are comprised mostly of photographs, usually accompanied by descriptive essays. Subjects range from landscape to macro photography and from one end of the Earth to the other, so to speak. Both plant and wildlife photography are well-represented. There are also a few pages in each issue dedicated to conservation news, book reviews, contest and workshop announcements, interesting wildlife facts, recommended websites, and other bits of useful information relating to nature or nature photography.

Nature's Best Fall issue is different in content from the other issues, however. Nature's Best and Cemex (one of their corporate sponsors) sponsor an annual International Photography Contest that is commonly held to be one of the most prestigious nature photography contests in the world today. Every year, Nature's Best dedicates its Fall issue entirely to the winning photographs from that contest.

Nature's Best is eye candy for the nature lover and is a terrific publication for anyone who enjoys great photography. ... Read more
