The Nitty-Rocky-Muddy-Gritty
Petersen has a knack for trade journals that warm to their subject area with a limited amount of fuss or bluster. They understand the automotive world in great depth, and write articles that are clear and to the point. Whether you are a novice getting your feet wet in the world of wheeling or a long time rock freak with a yen to drop a V8 in your CJ-7, Petersen's provides some of the best subject and interest articles in the business.

They do this without any overly macho styling that makes every automobile into a phallic symbol. This is good for the sport, since not every off-roader is a man with a torque wrench for a brain. They manage to do this without being the least bit dull either. You will find photo essays on notable mistakes, driving articles, essays on tire choice, and detailed discussions of how to create an off-road vehicle from sometimes unlikely components.

If you have to pick one trade journal out of the bunch, 4 Wheel & Off-Road is probably the choice that makes the best sense.

Four Wheeler
Great magazine.

I started to subscribe to one of the other 4X4 magazines then
noticed Four Wheeler.
This one fits my needs.

I have F150 4X4.
I don't do Jeeps. I rode in too many of them while active duty. Very uncomfortable.
This magazine seems to rotate toward full sized trucks.
Just what I like.

FourWheeler Magazine Trashed By Primedia Publishing
Don't waste your time or money!

I read many 4x4 magazines and have for over 25 years. I am not at all impressed with the current crop available, especially Four Wheeler. Primedia Publishing has bought out most of the automotive enthusiast magazines out there and now dominates the market. It's almost as bad as Microsoft, (i.e. as it's a Microsoft World).

Recent FourWheeler published the Four Wheeler of the Year Test and I received it with in 3 days of receiving my 4WheelDrive magazine with the same test. They both even had the same cover shot of the winning Soccer mom Station Wagon (maybe a fine vehicle but bad choice for a 4x4). Who are these testers, do they even live in the real world? Same vehicle won both tests and was on the cover of both mags. Inside the selection of articles were very similar and most case the same writing. My son and I both thought we had received duplicate copies of the same magazine. It was only by placing them side by side and comparing the cover names that we saw they were two separate magazines.

When Peterson Automotive Publishing (owners of the Famous Auto Museum in LA by the same name) put out the mags they were excellent articles with original content covering a wide variety of subjects related to each different magazine audience.

Then Emap bought out Peterson and quality declined somewhat. Then Primedia (a world wide publishing firm) bought them all out, and then quality went thru the floor.

Don't waste your money on these subscriptions until they can get the quality back up to where it was when Peterson published these titles. It's an insult to everyone to think they could pull off stunts such as this.

too many jeeps!
been a customer for years and also have been wheeling for years, its not that i have a problem with jeeps, But man you put a nice ford cover truck o my favorite chevys and the rest pertains to jeeps I have a full size 71 blazer and have been a few places over the year and theres alot of places so called jeeps couldnt touch, may i add i have owned 3 my self man can you find something more uncomfortable to drive and get in and out of. So other than that you guys also do some good oll muddin reveiws so i guess ill get yoused to seeing all those heeps oops jeeps

Four Wheeler Bible
If you are four wheel drive enthusiast, this is the only magazine you really need. I take nothing away from Petersen's Off-Road, IMHO Four Wheeler covers topics for top to bottom just a little better. There are sometimes too many features on vehicles out of the average enthusiast's price range, but it definitely gives you something to dream about. Valhalla or Bust...
I doubt that anyone would think, based on my current lifestyle, that once upon a time I drove a Bronco, read 4 Wheel Drive Magazine, and dreamed of exotic trips down impassable canyons. Bouncing up and down on impossibly high tires. Now, many tears later, I find myself with a Jeep Wrangler, reading 4 Wheel Drive (and Sport Utility) Magazine, etc., etc. It is interesting how pattern repeat.

While I have no delusions about how well I would fare if I rambled through the woods on 40 inch tires, it is still fun to read about the machines and the life that makes that possible. 4 Wheel Drive Magazine is both the fodder for those dreams and a valuable source of information for those who really do use their vehicles for adventuring. A typical issue will have several articles about trails and get-togethers, coverage of new products, and a variety of technical studies on what to do to make your vehicle into a personal triumph. I particularly like the articles on rebuilding vintage machines. Probably because most of the 'great rides' of my youth are the vintage machines of today. In the world of off-roading, there is no such thing as too old.

This is a middle of the road trade journal. Not in quality, but in terms of its market segment. The typical reader is serious about his vehicle, willing and able to make modifications, but not swept away by the machismo image that is part of the off-road glamour. Articles are well written and disinclined to substitute attitude for knowledge. And there are plenty of pictures for dreamers like me. ... Read more

Good Mag For Some Not All
This is a good mag for those interested in "R" rated humor and no full nudity. Vehicles are mostly excellent quality daily driven trucks. The women are incredible. The articles are top notch especially the tech articles. The photos are generally great quality with captions that either mean nothing or poke fun at the people in photo. There is foul language and some of the pics can be risky. Also there is a code in each issue that will get you on to a web site that has a few topless pics. All in all it is good. ... Read more

It's The Aura That Counts
Some things never really change.Under one branding or another, the Jeep Wrangler has always been an American icon.Jacked up suspensions, massive bumpers, countwinches, a layer of dust, and an incredibly loud sound system - who could ask for more.Primarily a male ego toy, many dream of packing up some food, beverage, and a beautiful companion on an unplanned trip to some unknown Valhalla.

Truth be told, most of us really do little more than hop into our squeaky clean wrangles and drive too and from work.An occasional secretive trip to a 'nature park' is as close as we come to roughing it in the wilderness.But the knowledge that we could do all those things is what is special.JP Magazine is intended to be a reality substitute for all of use who Jeep, even the rarer breed that really does go off-asphalt.

Even the technical articles seem permeated with dust, and the editorial staff's hobby of collecting photographs of women holding the magazine logo let's us know that here there be macho.The articles are usually quite pertinent (a recent issue focused on tires and wheels) and they are more than willing to confront the dubious.The tone is chatty, but how-to discussion are careful and complete.I think they sometimes overdo the Jeep mystique, but underneath the jostling and leering is a good, readable trade journal.

If you are a Jeepophile this is required reading.In addition to the technical articals, you can expect studies of custom Jeeps and off-road venues.You can even leave issues in strategic locations in order to impress your friends.

Down the Drain!
By the time my subscription ran out, I had tired of the lame humor, poor technical content, and hopelessly predictable format.It took three months for the subscription to get started and after two issues, I regretted buying it.Check out the web site before you buy this - it is pretty thin...

Great Magazine, if you can get it.
Where to begin...
