Soft Doll Adventure
I just purchased my first issue of this magazine. To my delight, it contains full size patterns for several dolls, as well as very detailed, illustrated articles on how to make each individual feature of the dolls. This is a project I have wanted to tackle for some time, and thanks to this magazine, I now have the confidence to get started. My first project is not yet complete, but I can already tell this is going to be a good one. The dolls in this magazine are not toys, and they are not simple to make. If you want something for your grandbaby to chew on, this is not for you. These are very complex, soft sculptures. Definitely NOT for the average or above average kid!
When I read the description of this magazine it sounded like an awesome magazine that showcased kids work....and it does showcase kids work. But definitely NOT the "average" kids or even "above average" kids work. There are poems, stories etc. that are supposedly written by 6 years olds and up that rival even the most sophisticated poetry of modern and classic writers known today. It sets an unrealistically high standard for most kids. It does serve as a major ego boost for the parents of arguably genius level children. We will not be getting it again.

Wrong magazine
The previous customer's review is not for this magazine. This magazine contains work by children 8-14 and is by kids, for kids. It showcases children's writing (stories and poems), artwork, and games. It is really a unique magazine and kids love it.

The customer is referring to the Better Homes and Garden magazine that has the same name.

Not What I Expected
I bought this magazine expecting it to contain projects and stories for kids similar to Family Fun magazine. However,the abstract for this publication is misleading: "Ideas and activities to entertain, challenge, and stimulate creativity in children ages 8-14." Most, if not all, of the activities are for parents to make, construct, sew, etc. for their kids. In the Spring 2004 issue there is a section entitled "Rainy Day Playroom" that shows parents how to decorate and constuct items for a theme bedroom. This issue also contains plans for building a coffee table and tree swing that both require the use of power tools including a drill and circular saw. Sadly, none of these projects indicate how a parent and child might share the work required. The articles are also focused toward parents with titles like "Good Manners -- teach your kids how to write thoughtful thank-you notes." I gave it a mediocre rating because this magazine is not what it claims. That said, I still plan to subscribe. The articles are well written and the ideas are wonderful. The rainy day theme room was very creative and I plan to sew several of the "personali-t's" t-shirts for my daughter. If it was named "Creative Parent" I'd give it five stars. Just don't buy this magazine for your "creative kid," unless you don't mind them asking you to make this stuff. ... Read more
