5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite soap opera magazine
I love this magazine because it has up to date information and tongue in cheek sections like "Tackiest Weddings"

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
of all the soap magazines this one is the best & I have received all of them. It had great information and lets you know what will be happening not some that happened a week ago. If you want to read a soap magazine get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
since the Young&The Restless is my favorite Soap this Magazine provides a cool glimpse into the coming week or weeks ahead on things.they have a cool overview on topics with the people in the casts&changes that occur.a cool read for all your favorite soaps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get up to date on all your favorite soaps
I'm a working shlub, so most of the time I don't get to see my favorite soaps.Yes, I said my favorite soaps. My name is Patrick and I like watching soap operas.*gosh that was harder than I thought*.I grew up with soaps because of my mother and during summers and breaks, it was very easy to get back into them. So, I've latched on to a few I like (As The World Turns being my favorite), but I work. This makes it hard to stay on top of what is going on on various show, or when to expect momentous storylines to come to fruition.Fortunately, there's "Soap Opera Digest".It has a lot of nice feature stories for when I have more time, but it also has a lot of 'quick hit' sections that can bring up to date on what's going on with every show. There's a late-breaking news section to announce major cast changes or future landmark storylines.A 'VCR Alert' section gives upcoming dates on each show that will have major plot developments. There's a 'coming and going' section to keep me up to date on what's happening with the constantly revolving casts. Finally, there's a comprehensive recap section for each show reviewing the past week's events, while also providing teasers about future storylines.Yeah, I'm a dork and readily admit that I like soaps. Thanks to this magazine, I can always keep up to date on them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value for the Money
Look, if you are a hardcore soap fan, this magazine will provide you with a ton of information about what's about to happen on your soaps week to week. Given that the newsstand cost is $3.50 per issue, this annual subscription rate is not bad at all. I actually check out both SOD and Soap Opera Weekly. If I had to choose between the two of them, I think I would get Soap Opera Weekly. But if you like and can afford both, you should. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really quite brilliant
I've been reading Index for about four years, and it's pretty much the only subscription I look forward to each month (and I have at least a dozen subscriptions). They have an intelligent, conversational tone to their interviews, as they get absolutely the most interesting people to ask the questions. Their taste is impeccable, too. They've turned me on to writers, musicians, filmmakers, even architects! This is what Interview magazine must have been like in their heyday of the 1970s. Also, the photography is fantastic.

When Daniel Day Lewis did his only interview in years, to promote Gangs of New York, he granted it to Index, a magazine he says he loves. Vanity Fair and US were fuming mad.

I really can't recommend Index enough, either. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Things Out There!!!
the onion is really great. i've never read an issue that didn't crack me up. it's the news with a comical twist. i could always pick up a free copy in nyc but i just subscribe to it because it's totally worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and More
The Onion is famous for its current-events and popular culture satires, which are consistently spot-on. The brash sense of humor and subtle insights into the personalities and issues being addressed makes this magazine worth its admittedly hefty subscription rate. The magazine contains more material than the website, so you definitely want to get your hot little hands on the paper edition.

But the humor isn't even the largest part of the magazine, just the front. The Onion A.V. Club takes up most of each issue, with in-depth articles on current movies, music, books, personalities, and more. It has a distinctly New York-oriented bent, as given away by things like concert listings for NYC, but most of it is applicable to the avant-garde and the hip-n-happening nationwide.

This magazine is an emblem of its age. Get it, read it, study it, and inject it directly into your bloodstream. Then you'll never wonder what's REALLY going on in the world around you again.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
This is the funniest thing i have ever read. It makes fun of everything and is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Journalistic Satire Ever Put To Paper
When the satire in MAD Magazine™ ain't quite doin' the trick, I turn to The Onion™'s unbelievably hilarious write-ups that take shots at just about everything & everybody you can imagine. From the complex intricacies of geek culture (Nate Orenstam's Op-Ed "Who Says Java Programmers Don't Have A Sense of Humor?"), "local" stories ("Church Group Offers Homosexual New Life In Closet"), and world events ("India's Top Physicists Develop Plan To Get The Hell Out of India"), no one is safe from the satirical wrath and wit of this weekly publication! Offtimes, just the titles of the articles alone (like "Adam Sandler Fans Disappointed By Intelligent, Nuanced Performance") send me into fits of barely-controllable laughter (My personal fave: "Special Olympics Tee-Ball Stand Pitches Perfect Game")! And funnier still is the fact that some folks and governmental agencies from around the world have read some of these fine little bits of journalistic parody and mistook them for actual news pieces!

If you wish to see a preview of what you can expect from "America's Finest News Source"™, check out the online edition at TheOnion.com. But just so you know, the web site features only part of the content that's available in the corresponding print edition. If you wanna get it all, you're gonna hafta subscribe...

Fair warning: the content of most Onion articles tend to be of an adult nature in content and language. Strongly recommended for mature readers only!

4-0 out of 5 stars More meaty than Wizard
While sections like "Longbox Manifesto" and "Ask Mr. Silver Age" will certainly appeal to long-time comic book lovers, CBG is a magazine that, month-in and month-out, will contain new and fresh news and stories that you more-than-likely didn't read elsewhere. The comic book and graphic novels reviewed each month are more than just Marvel and DC books, too, which is nice.

Wheras Wizard simply regurgitates the same news found on the various comic book sites online, Comics Buyers Guide is refreshingly new.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Wizard for the more discerning reader
When Comics Buyers Guide was a weekly tabloid, it appealed mainly to the hardcore comic book collector. Now that it has switched to a monthly format, delivering a healthy 244+ pages/issue, it has evolved into a dual-purpose magazine, still meeting the collector's needs while offering much more content for the discerning comic book reader and/or fan.

While Wizard is very good at what it does, hyping the latest Marvel and DC projects while offering a glimpse at the world beyond the big two - and the fanboys justifiably love it for that reason - Comics Buyers Guide offers meatier content and covers a much wider range of comics, with actual reviews as opposed to PR hype and creator-driven spin. Also, their price guide is more realistic, and thorough, than Wizard's seemingly hype-driven guide.

If you have to choose between them, Comics Buyers Guide is the one you want on a monthly basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get immersed in comics-buying culture!
This weekly publication is a great way to dive into the culture of the comics-buying world. The letters page is several pages long, often written by incredibly knowledgable and insightful readers. Also included are lots of reviews, articles on the industry and upcoming creative news, informative/interesting/entertaining columnists, convention guides, publication schedules, and classifieds.Content ranges from the beginnings of comic book history all the way to what's happening a year from now.Definitely a highlight of my week; often I read this before I read the comics I just bought. This comes from a publisher whose primary focus has been on collecting (coins, stamps, records, etc.)Trustworthy and entertaining! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good Spanish language magazine-3 1/2 stars.
This is quite a good Spanish language magazine that covers a variety of subject material. It will attract those who are looking for a little of everything health, beauty, relationship & fashion tips. There is plenty of coverage on the Latin"farandula". Meaning Latinos who are in the spotlight - music & television favorites. There are a few columns for example letters to the editor and people seeking advise on a more personal level . My favorite section is the tips on what books are popular and suggested literature. Overall it's not a bad magazine for easy reading and if you purchase it month to month you certainly have the option of buying it or not depending on what attracts you. I personally found the magazine a bit busy. There appears to be no clear structure and a well laid out magazine in my opinion is always nicer to read. The paper quality is excellent and the magazine is just the right size. It has the right amount of detail on a monthly basis. It's worthy if this is the type of information that you are looking for in a magazine. I much prefer the magazine over the TV show.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cristina, la reina de la tele
This woman's magazine, put out by talk show queen Cristina, will be appreciated by those who watch Spanish-language television, as it concentrates on the stars of the telenovelas, the news anchors, and the singers that appear on the music shows.
It also has some articles on Hollywood celebrities, and as an example, my latest issue has a piece on Esai Morales, and another on Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, and the actors he has used in his films, like Antonio Banderas.

Also included in this issue is a good measure of gossip, lots of bikini-clad starlets (Hispanic TV has a lot of visible skin), "Gloria Trevi, Inc.", about how Trevi's scandals have created a lucrative industry, "Las Botanas del Verano" for some yummy recipes, and one of the fashion features is "Piernas que Deslumbran", on how to take care of your legs so they will look attractive in those skimpy skirts.
"Playas Mexicanas" is a wonderful look at Mexico's most beautiful vacation spots, and a regular column is "Querida Cristina", where advice is given.

Cristina Saralegui was born in Havana, Cuba, came to the U.S. in 1960, and was raised in Miami, FL. Her charismatic personality, and terrific interviews have made her program the # 1 talk show in Latin America. The layout of this magazine is a bit of a jumble for my taste, but will appeal to the young and energetic; the paper quality good, and though the audience for this publication is fairly narrow, it covers a lot of ground. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More than a fan mag - more than a TV show!
If you are a fan of the world of Doctor Who, you can not go wrong subscribing. Past, present, and future issues are covered on a regular basis. The magazine has in depth articles regarding its history and those who played a role in it.Each issue also comes with an animated comic of the current Doctor(in COLOR even!) and very professionally done. There are reviews on every new product including DVDs, CDs,Books, and Audio Dramas. Once a year there is a FREE CD issue that includes an exclusive audio drama from Big Finish Productions. There are very humorous and enlightening editorials in each issue. All spin off series are covered as well (i.e. Bernice Summerfield, Faction Paradox, etc. ).

Overall the magazines visuals are excellent. They have the largest library of exclusive Dr. Who photos on Earth.

The only thing that I can complain about is the price - I could buy a lot of the books for this price. But where else are you going to get such extensive coverage? Cheap fan mags are okay, but this goes far beyond!

And for those of you who have not kept up with Dr. Who - it is no longer 'just' a tv show - it is a genre. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TOP MOVIE MAGAZINE - HANDS DOWN
No question. If you followed ALL movie magazines, even the sci-fi and fantasy spin-offs, quick VHS magazines (remember those!) then you should also remember about the time BATMAN premiered (what great movie hype!) Empire Magazine ran its first issue and then the great BATMAN #2 issue and we have not stopped collecting since, nearing issue 200 now as I write this, it has been a good one so far and I am sure will keep up the same pace for all new to the greatest `non-digital' monthly pages on the planet, I urge young and old alike to start collecting and reading now.

Empire has the best letter editor quick reply page, best movie news section that is fairly reliable, some interesting actor introductions, then the SOLID MOVIE REVIEW SECTION that is pretty much the most effective appraised segment in any magazine on any planet and to think that it is about films makes it all the more better.

Film personality, editorial and staff movie trivia segments, inside scoops, Questions and Answers about how much is a bottle of milk, Empire helped get us closer to these people who made us so happy at the silver screen and to that I have Empire to thank. The spine quotes at the side that can win us a T-shirt, the new DVD section (I lived for the old VHS one) your designers really knew what made us young impressionably men do in the bathroom with Michelle Pfeiffer in the mid-section, thanks for that also and I end this review by saying that if there was any magazine in the world that I would like to write for, I would give my left one for these people.

This is truly amazing film work... and yeah, it does leave Premiere magazine to go pound on sand.

Try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest movie mag on the planet!
I am a loyal, long time fan of EMPIRE magazine and have collected almost every issue from No.1. Being a British mag, it differentiates itself from others like Premiere and Entertainment Weekly by it's frank dissection of all movies, and provides a wide range of opinion and discussion. I will always read EMPIRE, and If you like movies, you should too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I worship Empire....
As a film geek and cinephile, Empire magazine is my WET. DREAM. Before I discovered Empire, I was wasting away in mediocre magazine hell with such trite, superificial trash as Entertainment Weekly and Premiere. I desperately needed a magazine as obsessed with movies as I was, and not just with the usual mainstream Hollywood excrement. Sure, Empire has its fair share of this sort of coverage, but it also has a plethora of features on indie, foreign (it IS a British publication), and cult movies. The interviews, articles and reviews are detailed, witty and informative. Empire even has a mini-mag in the back where DVDs (old and new movies/TV shows) are rated, with brief plot summaries and overview of extras. The only downsides to Empire are:

1) It's usually so thick I actually have a hard time finishing it before the next issue is out, which might or might not be a good thing.

2) The price! The price makes me want to move to the UK if only to suscribe for 16 pounds instead of 90+ bucks. I don't know how much 16 pounds is exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's a hell of alot cheaper than 90+ bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect movie maagazine for movie geeks!
This magazine seems too perfectly tailored to me, much the way I felt when I discovered Harry Knowles' Aint it cool News.As a monthly movie mag that pushes near 200 pages an issue, this blows the nearest US genre mag (CFQ, 6 issues a year, 80+ oages) to hell, and contains little to none of the 'snobery' of most domestic movie mags.Great mag for the movie lover who likes healthy doses of fun and humor with sincere film anaysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best movie magazine I have ever come across
Empire is by far the best movie magazine in publication today. Since the magazine is British, it provides information on movies that we in America have not yet heard of. This magazine has the best and most relevant reviews, and presents them in an interesting way. ... Read more

The ideal No Depression reader believes that Johnny Cash and Jeff Tweedy are both gods and for similar reasons: they respect tradition enough to rebel against it. The same can be said for the magazine that covers them with a similar restless energy. Started in the mid-'90s as a vehicle to cover alt-country upstarts, No Depression has since broadened its range to include all kinds of roots music, including folk, blues, bluegrass, indie rock, and even the occasional classic-rock icon (but only when former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant is singing Bob Dylan and Bukka White covers). It's fitting that the name of the magazine comes from a 1990 Uncle Tupelo album title, which in turn was borrowed from a Carter Family song lyric from the '30s, because No Depression is interested in music that draws on a rich rural history but is now played and enjoyed by urban hipsters as well as roots traditionalists. Although the writing and design tend to be as utilitarian as a pair of denim overalls, each issue is jammed full of reviews (of CDs, concerts, movies, and books), short profiles of regional musicians, and lengthy features devoted to major artists (recent subjects have included Guy Clark, Dolly Parton, Linda Thompson, and Rhett Miller). If you prefer your country music shrink-wrapped by Nashville, look elsewhere. However, if you think Austin, Texas, is the music world's mecca, No Depression is probably for you. --Keith Moerer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read, Read, Read, and Listen
This magazine was founded to follow the alt-country music, a label it follows with the tag "(whatever that is)." Here's a hint--if you don't know what alt-country music is, this magazine isn't for you.

Alt-country is music based on the rural traditions of the 1930's and 1940's, interpreted primarily by urban-dwelling musicians, addressing itself to modern concerns. This sounds like a broad umbrella, and it is. No Depression magazine has had to cast its net wider and wider over the last few years. A recent issue ran obituaries for Johnny Cash, Floyd Tillman, and Warren Zevon on adjacent pages.

Because the music this magazine focuses on tends to have a cult following and little radio airplay, you can be sure of discovering something between these covers you haven't heard before. Simply opening the magazine is a learning experience. Page after page of album reviews are often followed by readable, throrough-going feature articles, concert reviews, DVD listings, and more. Even the ads are mostly well-constructed and informative.

This is an easy magazine to read. The writing is crisp and unpretentious, and the structural design mimics the willfully primitive rural art of the Great Depression. You can read a lot very quickly and not feel like you've skimmed past the real meaning.

If you can have more than two alt-country or Americana albums in your CD collection, this magazine is for you. You'll stay ahead of the trends, you'll know the best raw music being made, and you'll always know what you're looking for when you go to the record store. And what's more: you'll hang onto back issues, because they're so completely worth rereading. There's no higher praise for a culture magazine than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars keeps me feeling up!
one of the most erudite music magazines on the market! several in depth articles in each issue. extensive reviews that don't fudge - candid and critical, and lots of pings to bands you've heard before, when reviewing those it's likely you haven't. the only criticism i can think of, is that it's become so big and thick with ads that it's gotten harder to get thru! but many of the ads display great graphic design, even they are fun! ...
