2-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable
I've been a subscriber of Cinescape off and on since it was first released sometime in the mid 1990's. It was a good magazine, never great, but good. I renewed the subscription back in March of 2003 when they overhauled the format of the magazine. I'm also under the impression that a new publisher owns it. At first I thought the new format was nice, but after a few issues I took notice how shallow the magazine is. To make matters worse, the magazine never shows up on time. They don't seem to have any sort of set publication schedule either. One issue will be printed as bi-monthly, and another will show it to be monthly. Customer service is abysmal as well. The website quality is also down. I will not resubscibe, and I do not recomend this magazine.

1-0 out of 5 stars THEY HAVE CHANGED
Magazine delivery is unreliable as stated. They have no set publication time frame, it's on a "when we feel like it" basis. I have a long time subscription and when calling to do an address change, the rep. couldn't even give me a date for the release and delivery of the next magazine. The new "owners" of this magazine have lowered the quality and customer service. Another wonderful side effect of the "when we feel like it" approach, is most of the articles that are listed as sneak previews are on movies that have been in the theatre for 3-4 weeks. Beware, you might be better off with SciFi, CFQ, Premiere, or Widescreen Review.

1-0 out of 5 stars They've changed
About a year ago they changed publishers or something like that, at least according to thier customer sevice. Since then, they do not have reliable service. I renewed my subscription in February 2003, and since I rarely ever get an issue, I still have 8 issues left on my current subscription!

Not only has the reliablility of getting an issue on time changed, so did their format. I find the new format to be boring and unoriginal.

I long for the dyas of the 'old' Cinescape.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for genre lovers
I absolutely love this magazine! It is the best source for news on future movie releases, becuse of Cinescape I knew about the Spider-Man and Lord of the Rings movies several years in advance. If you like sci-fi and fantasy movies, books, or comics this is the magazine for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Information-Age "Movie Star" Tabloid
Cinescape delivers what Hollywood believes fans to long for: Tabloid "news" about film-makers and the current creme de la creme of Hollywood mega-stars, stars and wanna-be's. Filled with some dishy facts, but also defty servings of plain gossip, much of it made up or embellished. -- If you want just the facts, Ma'am, then this publication is not quite your ticket. The New York Times will give you the true stories (sans Joan Rivers style trashy dirt). An ok pass time while waiting for your turn at the barber shop, this is not the kind of "coffee table lecture" fit to serve visitors, much less to "enjoy" issue after issue.*** ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stll the best Music Magazine
This mag has everything and is vastly under rated this is the only mag that counts in music and plus they don't hate like the rolling stone magazine and every article has interest plus they also go to the Bussiness end of it.However I am mad they have cut down the number charts on here they need more.
Articles 10 Charts 10 Specials 10 Enjoyable 10 Lasting 10
Overall this is a great magazine it may be the best around

4-0 out of 5 stars For Anyone Interested In The Recording Industry
Read it myself back in the 70's and 80's, and pick it up from time to time today. First and foremost, it is a magazine dedicated to keeping up with the business side of music. It often goes into detail about what artists are up to, how much money they have made or lost, and what the current trends in music are. You know the Top 40? Well actually the Top 40 is a partial list from the Hot 100. There is also a Hot CD chart and more. The magazine covers Rock, Country, R&B, Rap, Gospel, and a host of other music styles. There's always lots of colorful photos (many of which are suitable for framing), and bunches of informative and entertaining reading. What I've always liked about Billboard is, of course, the charts. They let you know where a certain CD or song is currently ranked, as well as where it was last week. It also denotes if its went Gold or Platinum. The huge magazine is also a weekly publication. If you like keeping up with what's hot in music, Billboard is the magazine for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for the general reader
Very expensive, and of interest only to someone working in the industry. Who cares about those multi-page listings of top 20 this and top ten that... I don't even know most of the artists covered there, neither do I care to know.

Articles are OK, but again, not for the general reader. It is a business-oriented magazine, there's hardly anything art-related in it, btw. But, if you enjoy reading full-page self-congratulatory adverts by law firms exuding fake happiness about helping to arrange this or that deal, this mag's for you. I quit reading it, even checking it out, after I got oh, probably like three issues of it. I'm not sure why Amazon markets it to the public at large, there's absolutely nothing of interest in the publication to the mass reader. It's a trade publication, kind of like "Embedded Systems", or "Government Foreclosures". So, for a specialist, it's probably a five; for Joe Sixpack - no stars. Since I can't give multiple ratings here, it's a three.

4-0 out of 5 stars Look up here if i you interested in latest music trend
Good place to get the latest music trend. A lot of info on artistes and music. Sometimes music review are on this article. Check it out. Fun to read also. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Filter is conning you!
No, no! I just read the other review of Filter here and it's all wrong. Filter pretends to care about the bands it's interviewing, but it's clear that the writers really care about going out to parties thrown by the magazine and hanging out with their favorite musicians, than writing good and intelligent articles! There are fashion spreads in Filter too, and ads from big corporations. Yes, it's true that the band's Filter chooses to interview are great, the articles they write on those bands aren't. Most of the articles are pretentious and rarely tell a fan of the particular band anything that he didn't already know about said band. If you want to read a real music magazine, with great writing and great bands, then check out either Magnet or Under the Radar. Filter is run by marketing company paid off by the record companies of the bands they interview and review, so you can't trust anything they say or do. Don't be fooled by Filter, they've got money on the mind, not the best interests of true music fans. One day Filter will sell out even more and just be another Spin, Rolling Stone, Blender or Alternative Press clone. That's just my opinion of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Filters" out the garbage
Music magazines -- that is to say, magazines that actually cover music -- are becoming a scarcer breed. Filter magazine returns hope to music-philes who despair of finding halfway decent coverage. Here it is: Excessive ads, hot-talentless-celeb-of-the-moment interviews, gossip and flash-in-the-pan coverage are not to be found in this sleek magazine, and that's a relief.

The smooth, glossy exterior of the magazine shows that a lot of care has been given to this magazine, and the contents reflect that. Music coverage tends toward good music that isn't as well known as it deserves -- Cursive, Modest Mouse, Hot Hot Heat, Queens of the Stone Age, the Stone Roses, Grandaddy, Supergrass, Hives, Sigur Ros, and more. Don't worry: good faves are not neglected: David Bowie, Lou Reed, Siouxie and the Banshees, and so on. When actors are interviewed, the choices are solid and the people are talented: Elijah Wood, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and so on.

The focus of Filter is clearly-defined, but not narrow. It's stuck on music that is good rather than just popular, but not snobbily so. If the music is good, then it gets included: there's room for Coldplay, the White Stripes and the Strokes in this tight little mag. Many of the groups it covers are up'n'coming. The detailed nterviews are polished and professional, peppered with nice clear photographs (the Bowie shoot is especially gorgeous). And reviews are clearly-written and concise, giving a sense of the album's flavor.

Newcomer Filter has the guts and strengths to become a music mag to be reckoned with. For devoted fans of good music, it doesn't get much better than this. Highly recommended. ... Read more
