Sweet magazine for grade-school girls
Hopscotch is a sweet magazine which is filled with craft ideas, recipes, fictional stories, and factual articles that the girls I sent it to thoroughly enjoyed. It centers on one theme each issue, such as Dolls or Horses. The innocence or quaintness of the magazine's articles coupled with a lack of advertising is refreshing today. One of the girls is requesting a Hopscotch gift subscription for Christmas this year. I only wish it was a little less costly but it's worth it. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Not worth the time or money
One story, some activities, seemed to be a really short magazine. Many of the activities seemed inappropriate and the hidden picture drawings were not very well drawn to find stuff. With just one story, which was an "ok" story, and activities to do that I don't really have time for, I wouldn't waste the money, my girls under the age of 5 were pretty disappointed, especially after getting a great mag like In My BigBackyard.

Not worth the money
I purchased this subscription for my now 4 year old boy. He loves the idea that he gets a magazine, but as a parent I am disappointed in content. There are very few activities and too many adds for a young childs magazine.

Hardly Worth It
I bought this magazine for my 2 1/2 year old. She was not very interested in it. It is mostly full of ads. The activities are okay I thought but there are too few of them.

For the younger kids
My son got this magazine for the past year. He is 5 and was hardly interested in it. There was very little in it he could look at on his own, mostly cartoon pictures with few photographs. He enjoys Your Big Back Yard much more.

Great for bedtime!!!
I recently purchased this magazine for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it. Every night she exclaims, "Mommy please read my turtle!" The stories in it are just right for her. I think it is a great magazine for little ones. ... Read more

A Great Mix
I've been getting this magazine since freshman year, and I'm only now, as a senior, really beginning to appreciate the mix of stories in every issue. We just finished our short story unit in English class, and I'm now rereading my favorites from the past few years. This magazine is sold as 14+, but some of the stories offer pathways much deeper into the literary world-what comes to mind is James Baldwin's Sonny's Blues paired with Langton Hughes' poem Harlem. I'm now doing a research project on Baldwin, but Sonny's Blues remains one of my favorites of all of his work I've read so far. Cicada is perfect for those years in between children's books and college reading when some teenagers lose interest in reading for pleasure due to required reading for school.

Good for kids to whom Cricket is gotten old hat
This is a preteen/early teen mag. Lots of good writing. Well edited, has some tough stuff as written by kids themselves. It's a good magazine and is argued over for the first reading.

Excellent Articles, Stories, Definitely Recommend!
This is a very stimulating magazine for my first grader! I definitely recommend it because it has fun activities and stories, along with NO advertisements or useless filler. I am extremely happy when it arrives because we both sit down and like to read the stories together and he likes the activities they come with a whole lot! He also gets US Kids, and Children's Playmate but I think that Jack and Jill is his favorite. ... Read more
