5-0 out of 5 stars Need birthday gifts for your 2nd grader's classmates??
Every year I choose one unisex, age-appropriate gift for the multitude of birthday parties that my sons will be invited to by their classmates and stick with it. This year my 7 year old is in second grade and at-home reading is a daily assignment. Instead of showing up at 24 birthday parties toting a plastic toy that I'm not even sure the child will have an interest in or with a few books that the child may read once or twice and stash away on a shelf, we give the gift that will be new and different each month AND will help them keep up with their nightly reading! Each one of his classmates will get a subscription to Ranger Rick for their birthday this year (unless the parents say the child already receives it, of course). It saves me time, gas and my sanity because I don't have to drag my son around a toy or book store guessing what each of these children *might* like. All kids love to get mail addressed to them even if it is something educational in nature. The parents of these children are also grateful to not add to the unwanted toy closet. This is way to make everyone happy without spending a fortune.

4-0 out of 5 stars great then, still great now
As a kid (20 years ago) I enjoyed getting Ranger Rick in the mail (what kid doesn't love mail addressed especially to them?), and loved the colorful photos and games inside the magazine. I would credit Ranger Rick also with helping to instill my sense of wonder and stewardship for nature, since I've only grown to love nature more as an adult. The sense of community of nature-loving kids is enhanced by childrens' letters to the editor, and the articles about kids exploring, doing biology and ecology projects, or just watching birds. The magazine manages to convey this sense of beauty and fun without getting too heavy about the political issues that often cloud pure enjoyment of animals and nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Foster My Love and Respect Animals
(...)

Living in the country as I did, I saw plenty wild animals in my backyard (squirrels, raccoons, possums..), but armed with Ranger Rick, I was able to appreciate and see them up close with out being bit, scratched, mauled, or hauled off to the emergency room for rabies shots!

Besides the wonderful animal features, there were projects, games, and activities to keep me and my brother busy. The concepts put forth in each issue emphasized recycling, kindness to animals, and conservation -- values and beliefs I carry with me almost 30 years after the fact.

So whether you live on a farm, the suburbs, or the city, Ranger Rick would be a wonderful gift for your child. It will help foster a life long love and respect for animals, as well as reinforce key values (conservation, recycling, etc.). A few things have changed over the past 30 years, but Ranger Rick is still consistantly a good magazine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ranger Rots!
This magazine is too old for kids like 6 year olds, and buy the time kids are old enough to understand it, the topics are too babyish for them. The pictures are okay, but they are all the same after awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great magazine for young minds.
I used to get this magazine years ago when I was in the third grade. I loved the magazine then and I still do now. The pictures are great for little kids to look at. They are real photos and not animated ones. The stories with them them are also great for kids to understand. They are extremely informative. I kept all my magazines I used to get, and now my daughter likes to look at them. I would highly reccomend this magazine for all kids. It wouldn't be a waste of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Discover is a great magazine!
My son likes reading factual stuff and I've been getting this magazine for him for several years. Each issue covers one topic in-depth. The photography and page layouts are wonderful, and each issue includes lots of information that is presented in a really interesting way. He has learned so much from these magazines, and he is a kid who really does not like reading much but he does enjoy this magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Discover mag
I subscribed to this magazine for 6-7 years when my own kids were younger. Our whole family loved its superb photography, interesting topics, and humorous and informative entries. Now I'm subscribing for my niece & nephew.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best educational mag's I've found
I bought this for my children and was surprised to find my husband and myself reading it as well. Not only did it come in handy for homework, but the old issues have been saved and used in projects, papers, homework and even by the teachers! I have five children, so they have had alot of exposure to diffirent age levels and have always proven usful. Some of the teachers were excited because this subscription was one that they wished that they could get every year as part of their class materials.
As an added point, while on vacation, we have spotted the back issues on sale in gift shops for as much as four ninety nine $4.99. These were issues that contained stories about the particular historic event, etc that they thought informative enough to sale.
You can't go wrong with this one!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I have been getting this magazine for my kids for about 3 years now. I love it as much, or more, than they do. Not only is it interesting and fun, but it is educational as well. I reccommend it to everyone with children or grandchildren!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good short stories and activities
This magazine is expensive, but each issue contains several stories, activities like mazes, finding hidden items, and basic colors and counting. My son does not watch TV (his choice), but he likes the characters in this magazine, who are all friendly and likable to him.

I also recommend subscribing to the mediocre Parenting magazine, only because it includes an issue of Sesame Street magazine with every subscription-issue. Sesame Street magazine is better than Preschool Playroom because it has a much broader selection of information (includes animals, geography, and multi-cultural lessons) presented in a style that preschoolers enjoy. Just leave the Parenting magazine in the waiting room at the pediatrician's office.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for younger viewer, and only if they know the characters.
Ordered this for my 3yo son. He was little beyond it and found it a bit boring. He also doesn't watch much of the younger kids TV, and so didn't know all the characters that are featured in each issue. Overall, it is probably OK for some, but not appropriate or useful for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine
I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 41/2 year old, they both love the magazine. It has characters that the kids know and are interested in. Lots of activities. My daughter went through the entire magazine in the first sitting and continues to go through it. The activities are right on target and don't frustrate her. I went to the bookstore and looked at all the magazines before I got a subscription. Some of the other mags have too many advertisements and are pushing their products. This has no advertisement pages in it. I liked the fact that it had activities that both kids were interested in doing. Counting and colors for 2 year old and writing and thinking skills for 4 year old. Highly reccommend. But, if you are looking for a subscription for your child, buy a few different single magazines for them to look at and see what they are interested in. You don't want to waste money on a mag they don't want. I was very happy with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Subscription problem
I ordered this magazine and never received it. I wrote to Amazon subscriptions and got an auto-reply. Still no magazine. Several months later, I finally recieved one copy. A big waste of money, but spending more time trying to get satisfaction probably wasting more time. Something is broken either with Amazon or with the magazine senders. Makes me hesitant to order magazines through Amazon. Magazine wasn't that clever - more like promotion of a select set of merchandizing characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars appropriate for 2 year olds and up
Unlike Nick Jr magazine, this is not full of ads, and the content is pretty much accessible to 2 yr old and up preschoolers with some activities that even 24 mo and up can attempt such as counting out / identifying all of the red toys etc. The stories included are also really sweet, about familiar characters and not too long hold my now 2 1/2 year old sons interest ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine!
I have found that "Instructor Magazine" helps me to stay on top of what is new in education. It has everything from "Web-quests" to in-service ideas. They have ideas for every subject, profile classrooms, authors, they even include a poster with corresponding lessons that go along with it. I love it!

I subscribed to this magazine for useful tips I could use for my own children. Not only did I find that helpful, I have also used the information to apply to my high school classes. Thank you for the wonderful ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars If I had to chose only one publication - this would be it.
Of all the Catholic magazines and newspapers we receive, National Catholic Register is my favorite because it gives a weekly overview of what is happening in our nation, around the world and within the Church. It is written in a tone that is neither "liberal" nor "ultra traditional" but solid in the Catholic faith. NCR also contains social commentary, spiritual essays/ meditations, and has a back cover-"front page" of pro-life news. Their acticle are excellent (without being over my head) and indepth (without being too long for my busy life). I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very relevant, intelligent and well-written newspaper
When I first subscribed to the Register, I wasn't sure if I was going to get a well-done paper or just a cheaply edited, not-so-good account of issues important to Catholics. The former was definately the case, and I read the Register faithfully every week. I was immediately impressed with how well the paper is edited and how intelligent the articles and commentaries are. The Register provides a thorough, unbiased and informed account of what is happening in the Church throughout the world, what is happening with Catholic families and institutions, as well as a host of other issues that are on center stage today. The perspectives are from a truly Catholic point of view but are not propaganda pieces. The intelligence of the reader is employed and stimulated in the presentation of the issues.

I highly reccommend the Register to anyone, Catholic or not, who wants to read intelligently written and relevant articles about the Church, morality, arts and culture, education, and other issues of importance to the Church and the modern world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to the "national catholic reporter."
If you're looking for a faithful catholic newspaper, the national catholic register is the way to go. Where the reporter goes wrong, the register goes right. That is to say, the reporter is a sad excuse for a "catholic" newspaper. They claim to be free of church influence, and the irony is that they really are.

The register has been around for quite a long time, and I would suggest checking it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real News! Real Catholic!
The Register holds a special place in our house... my husband and I try very hard to be charitable when it arrives and not say "Its MINE" and lock ourselves away in the bathroom (away from the six children). My oldest children (10 and 8) are now starting to make time to read it. They especially enjoy the back page, with pro-life news and the cartoon of "Umbert the Unborn." This paper isn't as shrill and depressing as "The Wanderer." The Register is also ten times more deserving of the "Catholic" title than "The National Catholic Reporter." the Register doesn't shy away from problems in the Church, but neither does it turn a blind eye to the GOOD things going on, either. We live, after all, in the springtime of evalngelization!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Newspaper Brought Me into the Church
Yes, it's true. Nine years ago, while attending the Catholic Church, out of convenience, with my wife, I first picked up the National Catholic Register. It was sitting in a rack outside of the sanctuary.

I quickly became hooked. The paper offered a perspective that I had never read before and each week I couldn't wait to read the next issue.

In the process, the paper also taught me about the faith. I converted from the Lutheran Church to Catholicism in 1995. Never did I expect that I would one day write and edit for the newspaper.

Yet, that is what I do today. I serve as features correspondent and Culture of Life editor, so I'm hardly unbiased. Still, it's a wonderful paper - filled with insightful commentary, news from a perspective you will not see elsewhere, and is hopeful. Most importantly, it's in line with Church teaching. I still read the paper from cover to cover each week.

If you've never seen the newspaper, or have confused it with the less-than-faithful National Catholic Reporter, do yourself a favor and subscribe today. You won't be sorry.

It's a great gift for friends, family, or children who have fallen away or need to be reawakened to the beauty and richness of the Catholic faith. ... Read more
