5-0 out of 5 stars el primero, y el mejor
Vanidades is without a doubt the best Spanish language magazine for women, with a wide range of subject matter, good quality paper, and excellent photography.
It has a lot of news from Hollywood, as well as the latest "royal" gossip; a recent issue for instance had an article entitled "Celos de Reinas", on the less than friendly relations between the current and ex queens of Jordan. The July 2003 issue, has "Asi Vive Harry", a marvelous spread on England's young prince, showing his art, which is imaginitive and colorful, and a photo of him as a cadet in a camouflage uniform that will make young hearts flutter, showing that Prince Harry is turning into a serious hunk !

As an example of content, the July '03 issue also has: Two pages of Colombian artist Fernando Botero's massive sculptures; a tour of London, with advice on where to stay, shop, and dine; many pages devoted to make-up and fashion; Martha Stewart "¿Por qué la persiguen ?"; from Italy, the wedding of Zulemita, the daughter of Argentina's Carlos Menem; a section on decor (in this month the theme is bathrooms), and lots of yummy recipes; a serialized biography of Jackie Kennedy, a short novella, which is romantic "lite reading", and much more.
A big plus for me, is that Vanidades has so far, no ads that contain "perfume", which I appreciate; in fact, their ads are well placed and not as invasive as is the current trend in women's magazines.

From movie star chit-chat to some serious subjects, this magazine should appeal to women in a wide age range, and with diverse interests. It also has a "world view" that makes it interesting, and would be helpful for those studying Spanish, as it is well written and in an easy to read style

... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH BETTER THAN I EVER EXPECTED!!!
This magazine is so cool!!! I never thought I would love a fashion magazine, but was I ever wrong. This is a great magazine for older teens, or those in their early twenties. None of the embarassing moments or quizzes about how to land a boyfriend are in this magazine. Instead, you get great articles, helpful beauty tips, real girls, and stuff from all over the world. ELLEgirl works really hard on it's "global girl" section featuring girls from all around the world doing something cool and different, and then fashion in that part of the world. The articles rock and are on real life stuff and not stupid model biographies. The music, book, and movie reviews are wonderful, much more comprehensive and intelligent than most other teen magazines. I love the fact that ELLEgirl is committed to using real girls as much as possible as opposed to skinny models that don't look at all like the normal girl on the street, and that ELLEgirl uses stuff in their fashion spreads that is actually reasonably priced for teens. Unlike most other fashion magazines, almost all of the stuff featured is $100 or less. This magazine is so cool! I love it, and you will too!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Dare to Be Different" says it all
Elle Girl isn't really a typical teen magazine. Sure, it has all those fashion and beauty tips along with other stuff teens love, but it's a bit different from magazines such as YM and Seventeen.

Elle Girl is wonderful for fashion-concious people who don't have much of a budget, since many of the clothes are pretty affordable. Also, the beauty tips are very helpful too. Elle Girl doesn't really have that much real-life stuff such as embarrasing moments, world issues stories, true stories about girls, etc. Rather, it is a mix of mainstream marketing with music, TV, books, clothes, make up, etc.

Overall, I think Elle Girl is a pretty good magazine for girls who don't want anything past fashion, beauty, and celebrities. If you want a teen magazine that covers more issues, I recommend checking out YM, CosmoGIRL!, or Seventeen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different
I just want to say that this is my favorite magazine (along with Teen Vogue). I love the way that it features teens from all around the world including how they dress, their customs, and what highschool life is like there. I am also glad that this magazine is not packed full of the same stories over and over about dating, having sex, and mainstream clothes, which can get boring and annoying after awhile. I would recommend this for anyone who likes unique fashions, different styles of music, and global situations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the average mag
YAY! Finally a teen magazine that I like! I've never subscribed to any kind of teen mag before (and I'm 16) because I found them sort of juvenille and tacky. ElleGirl is for people who want to be unique and different. I do wish they'd have more clothes that were cheaper, but they do give us ideas about how to do things ourselves, which is very cool. I like this magazine, and I'm looking forward to getting the next issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Style & Substance for Teen Girls!
Wow, I love this magazine! It's gotten better and better over the 2 years it's been out. It puts an original spin on the teen magazine scene. Most magazines focus on the regular things: horoscopes, preppy fashion, and embarrassing moments. ELLEgirl, however, is something new and fresh. It is divided into sections such as PRETTYgirl, TOTALgirl, STYLEgirl, FANgirl, BOYS, and (my personal favorite) GLOBALgirl. GLOBALgirl focuses on topics around the world. It puts interviews in with teenage girls in places like Iraq, Japan, and so many others! It also talks about global issues around the world, and how they affect not only us here in the cheery U.S.A., but how it affects the teen girls there! This magazine's fashion, beauty, and fan sections are great as well. It is also less-expensive than most teen mags, obviously ELLEgirl is a treat for all! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Donna Hay Magazine, Autumn Issue
I just bought Issue #14 at the local book store and I am very impressed. The photographs are excellent. I assumed the recipes would be long with an exotic ingrediant list but I was pleasantly surprised at their simplicity and that most of the ingrediants were ones I had on hand. Best of all, everthing I've tried so far has tasted great. I did find their publishing schedule a bit confusing as I could not find a date in the magazine and the cover only stated Autumn. I liked it so well I went to a different book store and found Issue #13 as well as cookbooks by Donna Hay. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome editors and fashion
Carine Roitfield is the editor-in-chief. She's the stylist that worked on Tom Ford's very 1st Gucci campaign, featuring photographer Mario Testino. M & M are the typography team; their work's on the lastest scribbles in the CK ads. French Vogue only features a variety of the hottest models and photographers on the covers and inside. Forget the tired celebrity covers and monotonous photographers of the american edition. It's pure fashion. Plus, it's hard to find the magazine distributed in the USA. Great price too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for new fashion followers, passe for insiders
Italian Vogue is very avant garde, and features the world's best photographers, models, and designers. But it's been exactly the same for like 13 years. It even got overplayed a few years back, as the only magazine carried around by top stylists. It's definitely worth a one year subscription, but you may want to reconsider renewing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST fashion magazines out there.
In a previous review I slated the incredibly banal American Vogue, and recommended Italia. Thank God Amazon.com now offers subscriptions. Although this magazine is "a little bit more" it is worth its weight in gold. Even if you can't read Italian, the fashion spreads more than make up for it. It is everything American Vogue tries to be...stylish, cutting-edge, progressive. Who reads American Vogue anyway? - There's nothing to read in it! You won't regret buying this magazine. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Spanish students
I subscribed to this magazine because I'm an Intermediate Spanish student. To my disappointment, the magazine is mostly English with only some paragraphs here and there in Spanish. Lots and lots of advertising which is mostly in Spanish.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try it!
Latina is a great, easy-to-read magazine that attempts to incorporate everything an 18 to 30 something year old Latina would care about. It scratches the surface of fashion, beauty, politics, and culture. The articles are informative, but unfortunately not too in-depth. However, it's just about the only magazine out there that addresses make-up for the Latina skin tone, clothes for the Latina body, and Latino political, health and cultural issues...so give it a try!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Weak Read - Filled with Ads and Stereotypes
I like the idea of a bilingual magazine, but LATINA's self-involved "spanglish" can be juvenile and borders on offensive at times. Although attempting to bridge the gap between the two languages that dominate US Hispanic society, it fails to make a connection in either one.

I've subscribed for a year and although I enjoy some of the articles and beauty tips as much as the next woman, I feel the magazine reads like a "poor-chica's" Nancy Drew mystery, with all its "buy-it-for-less" ads strategically inserted in the actual articles. That smacks of editorial sell out and lack of integrity. Plus, most of the articles seem to be written for 18-22 year olds. I don't know about you, but I grew up a long time ago!

Besides - Latinas (and all Latinos for that matter) have much more on their minds than the latest trends in mascara, runway fashion or shampoo! The magazine, though occassionally interesting, makes us appear two-dimensional, reinforcing negative images with its made-up language and limited editorial focus. It's as if LATINA is written for just one kind of Hispanic woman - a "Nuyorkina teen" with nothing on her mind except boys, sex and cosmetics!

For a much better read about Latinos in the US and our many contributions to the arts, culture and language of America, Hispanics would do far better to read Selecciones, Cristina or People en Español. At least those magazine offer more depth, news-worthiness, and expertise on fashion, beauty and the arts. Plus, reading in spanish means nothing if real MEANING is lost in translation - something LATINA succeeds at. With made up words and VERY loose use of both languages the magazine doesn't connect with either culture or present a unifying identity. Instead it often reinforces the finger-snappin'-salsa-lovin'-big-hipped vision of women of color. That's not something Latinas need these days - we can read AND think AND shop AND learn AND work in two languages - why do we feel we have to choose one or the other? Latina seems to think we must or - GOD forbid - we'll miss out on the latest trends for Fall Fashion! Que pena!

Sad thing is...advertisers seem to love it for all the wrong reasons (probably because they can read the english and dismiss the spanish.) That's too bad - our language should not be wrapped up in a neat package like LATINA as that undermines our common Hispanic identity. Instead, our bond of language should be celebrated and encouraged among Latino youth (the very target LATINA goes after.) We acculturate, not assimilate. We must incorporate the many worlds of Hispanic America (Spaniards and Boricuas, Cubanos and Argentinas, Mexicanas, Colombianas y Peruanos, etc.)through our beautiful language rather than kow-towing to advertisers and companies who dismiss us because they cannot read our words. That means they prefer we read THEIRs and at least for this reader, I CHOOSE to do both regardless of whether or not advertisers like it. Reading "en español" sets me apart and gives me an edge, plus it gives me a unique perspective I never get in LATINA.

Celebrate our culture AND our language - and maintain it for generations to come --- a good magazine like People Español or Vanidades can help you do that. A poor product like LATINA just undermines our own future.

5-0 out of 5 stars great find
I live in Europe and my sister sent me a copy of Latina that she received from a friend. I enjoyed it so much I subscribed.
I like the the diversity of latin women represented because each latin country has its own culture. I like the realistic make-up and fashion ideas that are not found in typical anglo magazines for Latin women. ... Read more

You know "Blush" magazine? Its fictional headquarters are the set of the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me. You read their headlines and article ideas, and you know they're based on this little piece of waste! What shocks me is that I know 13-year-old girls get their dose of sex and guys information from it. Very shallow, they try to be so sophisticated it ends up being naive! Stay away from it

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.
British Vogue is an absolute top-notch publication that I would recommend to anyone who is seeking a fashion magazine that is truly about fashion. So much more interesting than its American counterpart, I adore and await nearly each issue that is released (naturally, as with any magazine, there are always months [usually January and July] that are not as stellar as the others). The editorials are almost consistently cutting-edge and the covers still feature models much of the time, as opposed to actresses each and every month. It really does celebrate Britain but it always has an eye on other parts of the globe. The paper on which this magazine is printed is also lovely - always heavy and nice to the touch - and of course the cover is glossy (unlike the matte American Vogue covers that the subscribers are left with). And the occasional "Catwalk Specials" supplements are great - covering so many different shows and "trends" - all smartly laid out.

The companion British Vogue web site is also one of the best on the Internet. Each day they update a "Vogue Dailies" section wherein you can read the latest fashion/designer (and yes, sometimes gossip) news.

I just love this version of Vogue and I wish that the subscription rate was not as costly as it is. For now, I am content to always buy the March and September issues and most months in between.

4-0 out of 5 stars British Vogue is for those seeking style not fashion
British Vogue is much more "useful" than its American sister publication and covers "real" trends. The woman covered/photographed seem more intersted in "style" than "fashion". The articles appear to be higher qualitly and written for an intelligent reader. The British edition is a "slicker" smarter version. It makes one think of the Vogue of days gone buy. Spendy subscription rate, but very useful for those seeking to build a wardrobe. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for choosing a new style
This is one of the many different magazines that you can find at discount or grocery stores with lots of hairstyle pictures. This particular magazine is about 40% color pictures. At least the issues I've bought were. This is something you would buy if you wanted a new hairstyle that would involve a new cut. A majority of the styles in these magazines are shoulder length styles and above. This is a nice item to have in a hair salon for clients to get ideas while they wait. A lot of the pictures in this magazine are pictures of Celebrities so you can also use it to keep track of their hairstyle changes. This magazine unlike some of the similar ones also has a section in the back with some styling instructions although they are not long and detailed. They usually use one or two drawings to show what they are describing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A natural hair care magazine for blacks
After months of being continuously dissatified with black hair care magazines that featured women with false straight hair extensions braided into their permed hair and called that "natural", I was finally pointed in the direction of "Naturally You" the first magazine exclusively for those of us who wear our hair naturally. The magazine is well put together and there are many beautiful pictures of people with locs (that I wear) as well as twist outs and fros (that my baby sister wears). There are articles on styling options for corporate America, methods to deal with the "nap-patrol" and recipes for natural hair remedys. The magazine also caters to the spirituality, self-awareness and self pride that many people feel as they accept their own natural hair beauty and learn to care for it and there are sections for poetry and prose and other methods of self expression and all are beautifully done and laid out. That young woman (Kaya) should be commended for this splendid effort. I guess my only critique is that I need to see more "how to" info. The article on Loc maitainance basically told you to go see a loctitian. This was strange to me as most if not all of the loc wearers I know maintain their locs themselves and this is the reason for the self awareness and self pride. But, we are in the early stages yet, so please...keep it coming. I am getting ready to order the latest issue!!!!

"My lips are sealed!", vows Patsy Stone regarding a recent scandal of hers in the Absolutely Fabulous episode "Hospital". "You'll do 'Hello!' magazine, won't you?", asks her equally obnoxious best mate Edina Monsoon. Patsy mimes unzipping her mouth and says, "oh yeah- of course!" "HELLO!" magazine is like an English combination of "People" and "The National Enquirer". This is a fun mag with loads of American and international celebs alike. What makes it different from it's Yank competitors is the amount of entertainment news you get abroad, plus information on the Royals and "society" folk. A very pricey subscription, but worth every penny to me. If you, like me, are an Anglophile, you cannot live without HELLO! magazine.

A good sized magazine with unobtrusive advertising and lots of photos. Fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars If Martha Stewart were French, she'd publish this magazine
If you read French or not, this is a wonderful magazine. The crafts include embroidery, collage, knitting, tapestry, cooking and more. The fashion and style areas give novel ideas for using junk like funky-labeled tin cans for a beach house door curtain, making mirror frames from bottle caps. Think sort of, Martha Stewart with a French twist. The trimestrial issues have a holiday or seasonal theme, Christmas, Spring, Summer, Autumn.

Every issue has an abecedaire (sampler) in a clever type of embroidery. Usually there is a knitted pattern, most often for babies but not always. There is usually a travelogue to an exotic place, with great photos. And you can get a long long advance look at US style trends--for example, Marie Claire Idees featured toile and transfer printed china years before it got to be a hot trend in the US. I save every issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas and Photos
I love this magazine! I was in Paris and found it in the airport and couldn't put it down on the plane. It's full of pictures and ideas and instructions in the back, not lots of wordy fluff or advertisements, but just packed with beautiful, inspiring ideas. I subscribe to Martha Stewart Living and I'd have to say this beats it, however, it is in French and it's pricier to order. It was cheaper in France but I was very happy to find that Amazon offered it since I didn't think I'd see another issue again without going overseas, I think the price is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A French Idea!
I love this magazine. The presentation is so lovely and refreshing. I took French in school, but not enough to follow the instructions given for the projects. So, It's purely "follow the pictorial directions." I wish there were some way that this beautiful magazine could be captioned in some way. As part of it's charm is in the french language.

South Beach, Florida, the once sleepy village filled with fading art deco architecture and fading retirees, has in recent decades become the revitalized tropical playground for the famous, beautiful, and wealthy. Ocean Drive's namesake is the hub of South Beach's now restored hotels, clubs, boutiques, and restaurants. The publication is similar to other regional urban magazines (running features on real estate, local movers and shakers, nightlife, and eateries) save for the fact that some of the world's most glamorous people such as Ophrah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, and Gloria Estefan call this area home (or perhaps Home #3 or #4 or #10). But it is also a glossy fashion magazine; a fabulous celebrity or model lends her perfection to each cover. This magazine is world-class sophisticated, as is its subject matter, and the writing--when you can find it among the ads--is some of the best among its ilk. You don't have to be a South Florida resident to get absorbed leafing through its pages of beautiful photography. Ocean Drive finds company among Wor Vogue, and gives any followers of fashion an inside look into the lives of the world's biggest players--when they head to the American Riviera to play.--Beth Massa ... It's funny, laid back and relevant. At first, I thought it was going to be all about dating, but I was wrong. It's full of resources and useful information. It's bold but intelligent. If you're single, then it's the best and only magazine you'll ever need to put the spark in your life. I went on a Christmas Cruise that they recommended and had a blast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!! -- It's like being part of a club
What an awesome magazine. I didn't realize there was that much for singles to do until I got One 2 One. It's like my own social calender of events. I don't have to worry about finding a date to go with, I can just show up knowing that other singles will be there.Cool!!

Great music and movie reviews, none of the CD selections disappointed me, they tell it like it is -- The good, the bad and the ugly. They need to ease up on the chick flicks though!
What a great idea, the singles in there are classy, I even got an email back. This is my new favorite magazine ---Sweet! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Magazine - But...
I absolutely Love Southern Lady Magazine. I look forward to every delivery.

Here's the problem--I haven't received a copy in ages. The last one I got was Summer 2003. Help!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars best magazine
This is the best magazine on the market!!!!!!!!!! It is soothing, relaxing, inspiring, useful, decorative, helpful, and an all round good happy magazine. Everyone that I know that looks at it is impressed with it and can hardly put it down. The recipes are good. Even the ads are good. It is one that you don't want to throw away but keep forever. It is inspiring in that it gives you ideas for parties, friendships, home, food, and everyday living. It is a ladies magazine to the fullest. I wait and wait for the next one to come and then in the meantime, I read the old magazines I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
Every time I get Southern Lady, it's like springtime any part of the year. The photographs are so beautiful! It includes articles on decorating, food, fashion and stories of southern women and just a general positive appreciation of life in general. No horoscopes, male bashing, scantily clad models or errant life advice - just uplifting articles and photographs.

My absolute favorite part of the magazine are the articles about women who are entrepreneurs and fortunately, there are at least two articles like that in EVERY issue. I get so excited about that part of the magazine. If they ever drop those type articles, I will drop the magazine. But I don't think they will because I think those women make the magazine special and set it apart... especially because the articles do not mention any of the financial gain of the women, just their love of doing what they do.

It is so wonderful and inspiring to read about others who got creative and decided to do something for others, their families and themselves. I think the magazine's premise is not about being from the south, but is about enjoying the beauty and joy of life that can be found in the south.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Things Lovely and Feminine
Ephemeral visions of Royal Albert pink rose-patterned teacups, antique Spode teapots, vintage lace, and antiquarian books; snippets from my past four trips to England and France appear fresh in my mind with each issue I receive in the mail. Catering to the feminine lady who dances to a softer beat; who enjoys being a woman and all that that entails, this magazine is a respite of pure bliss. I often save my still-unopened newest issue for over a week until I can find that perfect little island of quiet time and alone-ness.....perhaps with a silver tea tray, a gathering of storm clouds outside the French door, a pretty needlepoint pillow, delectable candles on my pretty table. "Southern Living" is a jewel, a rare find today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful magazine
My stepmother gave me a gift subscription to this magazine, and I have since done the same for my friends. It is a wonderful magazine that covers a variety of topics and also various races of Southern ladies. It has beautiful photographs and ideas and wonderful recipes. Once you receive it, you won't want to discontinue the subscription! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great look at fashion
It's a fact to say that most women will get more out of this magazine than Vogue, Allure, Elle or any other magazine featuring "traditional" models and "healthy living" information. Figure magazine is full of great articles, beautiful clothes, and positive spin. Best of all, their is no subversive messages included. This is not a magazine for "fat" women seeking to be thin. Figure is a magazine that celebrates the average woman for being as extraordinary as she always has been. ... Read more
