I highly recommend "InStyle" magazine. Score:
The magazine is useful for trends and of course it's a good "sitting under the hairdryer at the hairdresser's" kind of fun thing to glance through. If you keep up with fashion trends, this is one of the better magazines on the subject. ... Read more

Perhaps one small downside to the magazine is that its cover stories on today's movie stars seem to be written by the star's publicists rather than by objective writers.
The lives of the rich and famous are a fascinating read. Truman Capotes Black and White Ball article a few years ago was great. The coverage in the Middle East has been cutting edge. I first heard of the Martha Stewart Imclone stock selling in the pages of Vanity Fair well before it became a scandal. In response to some postings on Amazon regarding the Hispanic comment: Dame Edna is a comedian. The Hispanic community should take his/her remark with a grain of salt and rise above it. I'm Polish, but I can still appreciate a good Polish joke. The well received sound of laughter is universal. In closing, I just love reading about casanovas from the 1920's, bi-sexual poets from the 1940's, outsider art from the 1990's, famous restaurants in the 1950's, the history of the corset dating from the 1800's, and cheezy billboard art on the highways of the U.S.A. Vanity Fair has it all.
Yeah, the photography's generally good, but it's simply not the magazine it used to be. It avoids hot-button issues that it used to confront. It lionizes crusty old thieves like former Klansman Sen. Robert Byrd, and profiles various vapid performers and their pseudo-accomplishments instead of writing about interesting people with genuine accomplishments. There is endless naval-gazing in the guise of longwinded nostalgic articles long-dead or irrelevant celebrities who had penchants for young boys, adultery or dope or whatnot. Bo-ring. Graydon Carter's monthly editor's message has degenerated into a reliably tiresome Bushphobic screed and Dominick Dunne has become a pathetic yet energetic fluffer to the wealthy. The attempts at humor are lame, the in-jokes irritatingly smug, and the notion that our large, interesting world can be condensed to a NYC- and, to a lesser extent, LA-centric society newsletter is equal parts incestuous, xenophobic and self-congratulatory. I will miss the essays from Hitchens which I always enjoyed. And the ones from Wolcott, which I mostly enjoyed. Some of the investigative reporting is good. But there is never any followup beyond the odd Letters page flamewars. Vanity indeed. ... Read more

I love fashion, and I love looking at the ads, judging outfits and models, comparing and contrastiong. I am an aspiring fashion designer (among many other talents) and Vogue is my key source to what goes into my portfolio. So Many ads with high fashion, cut out what you like, arrange, and paste it to show your creativity. It's all about the clothing. Though it sure is a bit degrading. Media image portrayal on women is depicting; models typically being emanciated and tall symbolize beauty and everything else. Being all fashion, Vogue surrounds this world of the impossible "ideal", from a cover with the ghastly yoga super model Chrity turlington (who was featured bent in all abnormal ways wearing a skimpy yoga thong thing. *intense therepy*) to ads with the new "it models". So be carefull not to get sucked into the "ideal" vogue and fashion promotes. In conclusion. if you just want literature, invest your money in the new yorker.

Marie Claire is my best friend and my best friend's best friend.Keep up the good work.
1) It still has the fluffy/girly "Cosmoesque" articles we can't help loving (i.e. "What are his p.j.'s telling you?") -- which the upscale fashion magazines (such as Vogue) won't cover -- but it presents these in a much more respectful way than Cosmopolitan (or even Glamour) would. ~For example, in an article entitled, "How long should you wait to get married?", a handful of couples of differing experiences simply explain what worked for them. There is absolutely no commentary; readers are to take these first-hand accounts and decide how they feel about the issue for themselves. (This is how Marie Claire does most of its articles.) This is in direct contrast to the Cosmo approach which, no doubt, would have included a timetable to follow and games to play to make it happen, all under the authoritative voice of some quacky, pseudo-"expert". Considering the above, I still find it amazing that Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan are published by the same group!

Lucky is a great resource for extending your wardrobe in a smart, fashionable way that won't break the bank! If you're looking for real tips on wearable clothes and makeup and are tired of reading articles like "How to Please Your Man" (Cosmo) and "Here's What the New York Socalites Are Wearing" (Vogue), then Lucky is the magazine for you! Here are some of its monthly features: - A page with "Yes" and "Maybe" sticky tabs for marking things you'd like to buy. No more messy dog-ears! People may complain that there are a lot of ads in Lucky, but have they not noticed them in other magazines? Lucky is dedicated to shopping, so ads make sense, and they're not any more prevelant than any other magazine. This magazine gives fashion and beauty advice that you can use, and clothing you can actually afford to wear! As a 22 year old, I know that's what I'M looking for in a fashion magazine!
Lucky gives your trendy, classic, chic, preppy - whatever your taste may be. I like to see what's hot and then try to find copy-cats of the designer duds b/c who really can afford to spend(...) on a pair of Manolo shoes??

The magazines focus is on beauty though you will also find some fashion pieces. What I like most is the magazines unusual look at beauty. For example past issues have included a peek inside at the items in some bathroom cabinets belonging to well knowed women. And there are many traditional articles on beauty. Allure excells at being on the cutting edge of new technology that will make you even prettier. On these pages you will find out about botox, laser surgery, high tech hair and more. Allure is refreshing in that it does not have a diet article every month. In fact several years ago Allure made a point to state that it did not want to offer up a diet of the month. But Allure does share tidbits of diet information like the latest on sweeteners or water weight. It will also occasionally run true life stories on dealing with the emotional side of eating problems. And recently has tracked two women and their weight loss efforts over several months. Fashion articles are limited to a few pages and usually include pictorials on new trends, staking out the look of a star and the latest scoop on accessories. Definately Allure is the magazine to buy to learn how to keep your look fresh and fun!
It covers everything from makeup, clothing, skin care, to health and the ups and downs of plastic surgery. There are special little features in every issue that totally devote themselves to one aspect of beauty. One month the article was devoted to how to pluck your eyebrows, and it covered everything from technique to good tweezers to what to do to reduce swelling. Another month it centered around sunglasses and recommended styles and shapes to suit your skin tone and shape of face. Another month it was devoted to eyeliners! What kind of liners do what, what brands are recommended, how to apply pencil, liquid, powder liners... wheee, it's pure heaven for any beauty fanatic. I also love how they take the time to go over what type of makeup the featured celebrity is wearing on the cover. It bothers me when I see the featured celeb wearing a divine shade of cosmetics and not being able to find out what it is and where to get it. There is beauty Q&A galore in Allure. Some of the most respected names in haircare, makeup, nails, skincare, etc., are regular contributers to Allure and answer questions sent in by readers. There's also a makeover in every issue! So renown is Allure's makeup savvy that if a brand of beauty product wins an Allure's viewer's choice award, they proudly display it on ads and packaging. The editors and reporters do a fine job of introducing and reviewing new products, something I love reading about. Aside from beauty advice, they also produce some very serious articles regarding beauty. In one month's issue, Allure reported on the various forms of cosmetic procedures and produced before/after pictures of each featured procedure and reported the pros and cons along with reviewing the general effectiveness. If you love beauty and haircare, get Allure! What you'll find lacking from Allure are the political articles (like you'll find in Marie Claire) and the sex and relationship articles (like in Cosmo and Glamour). This is first and foremost a magazine devoted to beauty all the way through.

If you want to find a cover story fast, they have an "on our cover" section in the index. In Every Issue there is a shopper's guide and a recipe index. The articles are helpful and in the March 2002 issue they had an article on how to be less stressed. They also had an article on PCOS which is apparently more common than we women think. The beauty sections show you the newest fashion and you can decide if you want to adapt your style to the trends. Always seems rather chic. Some of the recipes in the March 2002 issue included: A luscious Lemon Coconut Pound Cake The recipes are not difficult and seem practical. Even the advertising in this magazine is colorful and fun. A Very "American Gal" type magazine.

Griping parents, you might not like that. ;) So quit complaining about this print. Anyway, besides the millions of advertisements, COSMOGIRL is semi-insightful when it comes to real life. Editor Atoosa Rubenstein has included controversial real-life stories that happened to real girls. Yet these types of horror stories, in a sense, serve as a guidance to today's youth. I also like that this magazine doesn't really preach absistenence, although some peeved readers have encouraged it via monthly mail. They've had articles on PROTECTION. Now that's useful! The embarassing moments never really get old. Somehow, they keep on finding new, hilarious situations to publish. A more recent addition, MI VIDA LOCA, is even more enjoyable. Some of the stories are so outrageous that it makes you wonder if a reader merely conjured them up in her head... Star interviews are also a genuine treat and almost always very well done. I've enjoyed interviews from Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Kirsten Dunst, and others. Even if I don't enjoy a star's work on screen/in studio, the interviews sometimes are so insightful that I see a whole new side of them. Overall, COSMOGIRL is worthwhile, probably your best bet next to SEVENTEEN. I broke my magazine addiction a year or so ago and I don't read them as nearly as much - most of which are total garbage. COSMO ain't great lit, but it isn't trash like TWIST and TIGER BEAT, either.
CosmoGIRL! covers real-life stories, fashion, beauty, celebrities, music, movies, and more all in one issue. And the best part is, there's plenty of it too, not just one or two pages. The magazine features many imformative and touching real-life stories, and interviews with all of your favorite stars. In addition, there's also the fun stuff like embarrasing moments stories and fun and risky stuff to try that month. And of course, my favorite column, "Cool Room," where real girls get awesome bedroom makeovers. Overall, CosmoGIRL! is a great magazine. There's not that much talk about sex in it, either, so you can feel comfortable giving it to a twelve-year-old girl to read. I found it to be a wonderful magazine and I know that I will be adding it to my subscription list. ... Read more

The articles are definitely the best part of this magazine. I've seen everything covered here from politics to perfume testing. It's like no girly magazine you've ever seen before. They do have the usual gossip and trends but put forth in a much more thought-provoking way any smart girl will end up, if not loving, at least liking enough. They also have the celebrity issue every year where celebrities come together to "produce" most of the magazine. It's quite refreshing to see what these people can come up with, usually with very funny results. I gotta admit I'm not a subscriber but I do pick it up from time to time. It's a fun, smart detour from the usual Cosmo. Buy it for the fluff, love it for its mind.
