The magazine has plenty of good articles on health, exercise, nutrition, sex, etc. This is one of the few magazines that I can actually read from cover to cover; it has tips on how to fight off sickness (i.e. cold, flu, etc.), how to exercise--I've found out what I've been doing wrong in my workouts as a result, and how to please a woman. If you're interested work-out tips like I am, this magazine offers some but not enough... For extensive work-out tips, I suggest you go get "Exercise&Health"; in my opinion, "Exercise&Health" has the best work-out tips, and the magazine has lots of them! For general health, however, I recommend "Men's Health".

My wife enjoys cooking from the recipes. What I love about WW is that you can live a normal life and eat the things you want. You'll be surprised at how many calories you can cut out of a regular dish just by substituting certan ingredients. And you don't even taste the difference! Sometimes its even better. If you're trying to lose weight through WW, you really should have the magazine. It's inexpensive and it will help you along the way.

If you want to find a cover story fast, they have an "on our cover" section in the index. In Every Issue there is a shopper's guide and a recipe index. The articles are helpful and in the March 2002 issue they had an article on how to be less stressed. They also had an article on PCOS which is apparently more common than we women think. The beauty sections show you the newest fashion and you can decide if you want to adapt your style to the trends. Always seems rather chic. Some of the recipes in the March 2002 issue included: A luscious Lemon Coconut Pound Cake The recipes are not difficult and seem practical. Even the advertising in this magazine is colorful and fun. A Very "American Gal" type magazine.

Shape magazine stresses the points that I think are most important in a women's fitness magazine. It offers inspiring weightloss stories, quick (and edible) meals, and fun workouts to boost your regular ones along. And while some of the workout tips CAN get repetitive, just remember.. there are only so many different ways to do a sit-up. Readers of any and ALL fitness magazines know that they usually have the same exercise tips to offer over and over. Shape encourages and enlightens. It shows a way to incorporate exercise into any lifestyle and gives you the encouragement to continue an exercise regimen-- no matter how sedentary you are.
Another problem is that I don't like that they show 5-foot-11 models, that are perfectly skinny, and with perfect flat abs, when they could show more *average* women, or possibly a little bit curvier. I don't know about you, but I think that you don't have to be skinny to be beautiful. I just wish that they could see that everyone comes in their different packages. I agree with A.T. also-they also need to be more diverse with their women-black people need to be shown a little more as I rarely ever see black women in this magazine. I suggest that if you have a gym membership, then you should buy SHAPE off the magazine stand every blue moon or so when you see a good issue. If you don't have a gym membership, like most of us, then get SELF instead; it also offers great motivation.

The Rave Run two page spread photographs are lovely. They each show a runner in a really cool environment with a quote. I have some of them hanging on my wall. I get especially motivated by the one of a man running through the woods when the trees are coated with ice and the ground blanketed with snow. It looks so beautiful, who wouldn't want to go out and run. The ask the expert or Q&A section has the most diverse and informative information from month to month mostly because the questions come from readers and the answers come for a variety of experts. The nutrition section isn't particularly useful. The science seems simplified to the point that it isn't exactly true, and the suggested menu for one of the carbohydrate dinners starts out with 1 cup broiled swordfish along with five or six other things; not really practical in my opinion. Runner's World has a nice coverage of racing events past (results) and future (racing calendars), and my hometown of Boulder, CO is mentioned somewhere at least once per issue :). Runner's World encourages everyone to be a winner even if he or she doesn't finish first. It is full of tips for beginners just staring to run and more advance information about training for seasoned amateurs. Some of the information is useful and some is not, but there is enough useful information to make reading worthwhile.
There are many educational benefits I receive from these magazines. I enjoy their training tips to help me improve my running time. I enjoy their list of races in the back of issue so I can plan what I want to run next in my geographic area. Most importantly, I highly appreciate the safety tips that are included. Running can be very hard on your body, as most of my cross country team learned in high school. This should become standard reading for high school students. I wish my coach had gone through an issue every month with us, highlighting how to run safely while diminishing run times. If you run, get this magazine. If you don't run but would like to, visit their educational web page to get an idea how to start and then subcribe to the magazine so, like me, you are reminded to get off your duff and hit the streets.

I believe yoga is significantly more than which blocks help with better alignment, and wish that this were a magazine that supported this fact. While I understand the value of adequate advertising to the success of a magazine publication, I can't help but wonder if the writers who submitted articles on the commercialisation of yoga have actually had a chance to browse through the magazine. Subsequent to my subcription to Yoga Journal, I have made contact with Yoga International and will be reviewing that publication before making another such misguided decision.

The health, nutrition, etc. articles are all 1st rate and there is no commercialism involved. Many books or articles related to WLS are strictly for the pre-op. This magazine is not that way at all. I will be renewing my subscription.

Nearly every article is selling something. And recently, there was a four-page ad made to look exactly like a PT article encouraging low-carb diets, with "advertisement" printed in tiny gray text as the only indication it was an ad. On the back cover was an Atkins ad. Much of the advice given in their columns is questionable and reads like it was written by a seventh-grader.
As someone who was taking Psych courses as an undergraduate I bought a three-year subscription to PT. As I continued my studies, I began to just toss the magazine away as it would arrive. There is no real substance here that peaked my interest. The magazine offers great topics but just didn't seem to follow through. Most of the time I was able to guess what the overall article would be like after reading the title. New information was rarely offered that wasn't 'common knowledge'.
Full-page ads: for an herbal sexual enhancer, This magazine seems far different than the one I remember from years gone by. This magazine is definitely for the average man on the street with almost a spiritual/mystical inclination, who focuses on a lot of shallow concerns. At least that's what I believe by critiquing who the magazine accepts and uses as advertisers. Focus on stuff that matters. I gave it two stars instead of one, because I will give it some credit for leisurely reading. P.S. Give yourself a more professional image.

Having said that, there is bad with the good. There are an enourmous number of multi-page ads for supplements, often posing as articles. Some of these are of dubious benefit and often make outrageous claims. 90% of these are useless for the general user (I have no interest in spending outrageous amounts of money to build muscle while I sleep) though I imagine a professional would be interested in anything that might help them gain a slight competitive edge. In my opinion there are too many ads which tend to distract from genuine articles. There is also great emphasis on building mass and losing fat - if you are thinking about subscribing to this magazine you should be far more concerned about the "muscle" aspect than the "fitness". So, in conclusion, there is some good and some bad. You may be better off just buying two or three of these magazines if you are only looking for ideas to add variety to your workouts. After a while the articles start to repeat themselves.

This magazine has been in the forefront of getting the word out on alternative treatments as well as informing on current toxic therapies. They've been saying for years that mammograms do more harm than good. Finally, the mainstream media catches up with them. I've read this magazine since 1995, when it was founded. The information I have garnered has been invaluable. I never throw away a single issue. Their books are the best on the market. I especially appreciate their efforts to inform people about the hazards of current cancer "treatments". ...
