I bought the very first issue of Flex. For the record, Chris Dickerson was on the cover and wow has Flex evolved since that first issue. And so has the sport of bodybuilding. Physiques have gotten bigger but I am not sure they have gotten better. In my mind, Arnold is still the greatest of all time based on size, symetry, shape and muscularity. I enjoyed the piece on Lou Ferrigno as well. It is almost a shame that he got the role of the Incredible Hulk which curtailed his bodybuilding career but I am not sure that Big Lou would have gone much further than he did. Robby Robinson handily defeated Ferrigno at the MASTERS MR. O in 1993/1994 and would have taken Louie in the 70's. So would have Columbo and Zane. In another regard, Serge Nubret is listed as a darkhorse and squeezed Lou into third place behind Arnold with the Black Panther Nubret a close second. Are the publishers aware that Serge Nubret won his height class in the 1960 IFBB Mr. Universe narrowly losing to the legendary Chuck Sipes and defeating AAU Mr. America/NABBA Mr. Universe Ray Schaeffer? Or that Nubret finished 2nd in the 1964 NABBA PRO Mr. Universe and third in the 1972 IFBB Mr. Olympia behind Arnold and Sergio but ahead of Franco Columbu and Frank Zane. Nubret could hardly be called a darkhorse---He had been competing at the highest level before Arnold, Oliva, Zane, Columbu or Ferrigno even started training! Nubret ranks right up there with Arnold and Oliva. At his best he had muscularity and a aesthetic physique. He was sort of like a cross between Arnold and Zane. Aside from having a world class physique, Nubret was also a world class promoter/ambassador for the sport of bodybuilding and was primarily responsible for building the IFBB in Europe back in the 70's. Flex should do a article on this legend. Other than that, Flex was a great issue and I am looking forward to being a reader for many years to come.
Oliva made quite an impact back in the 60's. He had an an incredible V-shape and was huge. When Sergio hit a most muscular shot--it was positively mind blowing! Then Oliva would throw those huge arms overhead and hit his signature pose which nobody could come close to. My only complaint with the articles was the inference that Sergio won NABBA/WABBA and WBBG shows against "mediocre" competition? Serge Nubret, Bertil Fox, Kalman Szkalak, Dave Johns and Tony Pearson, just to name a few, could hardly be called "mediocre" competition. Nubret beat Ferrigno, Zane, Columbo and others and all of the above mentioned men were Mr. Universe winners. Szkalak beat Mike Mentzer for the IFBB Mr. Universe and Dave Johns beat Casey Viator for the NABBA Mr. Universe. In 1976, Dan Lurie's WBBG organization, hosted a Pro show called 'Mr. Olympus that rivalled that years 'Mr Olympia. Oliva won that beating Nubret, Tony Emott (Pro Mr. Universe) Chris Dickerson among others. Flex mag is a great hardcore mag. Great you are doing features on Oliva, how about doing one on Nubret and Draper now.

In the June 2004 issue they featured an interesting website that shows you how toxic your zip code is. I was relieved to find that I had moved to an area with good air quality even though I keep an air purifier running constantly. They say the air inside your home can be more toxic than the air outside. This magazine makes you more aware of all the resources you really do have to enhance your life and the advertising is at least encouraging instead of annoying. I am now lusting after a Dyson vacuum, thinking about trying out some new Wai Lana Yoga workout videos and dreaming about buying all the natural skin care products featured throughout the magazine. Dr. Tieraona answers questions in a living well section. Although, I was wondering why she didn't recommend a product like Emer'gen-C "Lite" to the person asking about their afternoon slump. "Create a Butterfly Garden" will be an article to clip and save for future gardening projects. It may be time to buy some purple coneflowers. You can also read about nontoxic fertilizers and pesticides. Veronique Vienne has an article in the June 2004 issue about entertaining even if you're shy or broke. She recommends things like cooking with butter and fragrant herbs and lighting honeysuckle candles. Just reading about her adventures made me hungry. There also seem to be pages of decorating tips, sports features and information on lifestyle choices for families. This magazine promotes healthy life choices like balancing family and work or finding healthy food on the go. There "How to Pack a Picnic" gave me some great ideas for a summer picnic. Now if only I could escape into Vincent Van Gogh's painting "Landscape at St. Remy." If you enjoy using organic ingredients, you will find a few recipes and the Stuffed Summer Squash is a recipe I'll try as soon as I can find some small yellow summer squash. There were tips on how to save money on Organic foods, which yes are slightly more expensive in general. Although, you might notice you spend less money on doctor visits or other areas of your life because healthy choices do make you feel much more healthy over time. While this magazine is all about Organic, it is not Vegetarian focused. You will still find recipes for Crispy Chicken Drumettes to go along with your String Bean and Fennel Salad. They had a taste test for organic cookies and I have to agree the Country Choice Organic Sandwich Cremes are better than an Oreo cookie. Overall, I found this magazine to be highly enjoyable to read in the bath or out on the deck. If you have just returned from planting flowers by the light of the moon, you might enjoy reading this magazine while soaking in an Aura Cacia Purify Aromatherapy Mineral Bath scented with the fragrance of flowers and spicy wood. I've asked my husband for a subscription for my birthday because I thought this was a great way to remind myself to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Organic Style not only makes you more aware of your lifestyle choices, it presents some interesting options. You can now even buy natural wheat litter for your cat ~TheRebeccaReview.com

The magazine has recently been revamped and is shallow beyond words. It's now nothing more than the usual glamour magazine targeted toward women with a fluff article or two on alternative healing thrown in for appearances sake only. After years of getting a magazine with indepth and very informative articles on alternative medicine, I routinely throw this new model in the garbage the moment it arrives at my home. Don't waste your time or money. I won't be renewing my subscription.
Here's an example: this month (MAY 2004) had an article about jet lag and one of the ways to lesson the lag was "sleeping pills/waking pills". This may help jetlag, but it's not "natural health" and an alternative should be listed, although professionals may recommend pills. Another complaint, is every month there is an article focusing on weight loss. Sounds like a typical mainstream magazine, although it's not as good as the mainstream magazines. I do not recommend this magazine if you are actually looking for info on "Natural Health".

My experiences with Runner's World make me think about the thousands of people who "run" road races all across the United States. I put run in quotes because there are plenty of people who run races to finish the race, very noble goal. Runner's World provides quick suggestions for making longer races interesting (i.e. take a camera on a secenic race course and take some pictures). Great idea to get people out for races, but not a good idea for someone who wants to improve their race time. Gallowalking will get you to the finishline, but if you have been training appropriately, it will not drop your race times. My experiences with Running Times tend to make me think of those people who want to drop a minute from their 5k PR. Whether you are running 21 minute 5k's or running 16 minute 5k's, Running Times will provide runners who are interested in improving their running with the information they need to improve. Pete Pfitzinger in particular brings an incredible wealth of scientific and real-world training and racing knowledge to each issue of the magazine. I highly recommend Running Times to anyone who is serious ABOUT their running.
I subscribed to Runner's World before I had ever heard of Running Times. I wanted even more motivation to get out there and run distance, so I subscribed to both. Running Times concentrates too much on athlete runners and "destination spots" to run... like Hawaii or the Rocky Mountains, places that have beautiful pictures but are of no interest to me and my running. Furthermore, Running Times concentrates on individual races and results with more detail than I care for. I really don't need a one-page article on the Chicago marathon. I find the occasional article about eating better or training for a better 5k/10k/marathon in Running Times, but those articles are pretty sparse. I grab an issue of Runner's World and it's the complete opposite. I get information about training, eating, injury prevention, stretching, etc. It has the same kind of race calendar as Running Times for the 5 and 10k's that I want to run. It's information that I can use as a runner. If you'd rather get information about how to improve YOUR running and not stories about running, stick with Runner's World.
Well written, and cleanly organized, you'll read about the training methods of top runners, and the top techniques for meeting a specfic goal. Marathoners and 5Kers will find that there is a lot to be learned from each other's distance, and they'll have the chance here. For stats junkies, the people who love to read who won the Juniper Days 5K in Upper Nowhere City... oh, the feast you will have! As a stats junkie myself, I thumb through the times quickly before devouring every detail. I fully recommend this magazine. Anthony Trendl ... Read more

I've subscribed for a year and although I enjoy some of the articles and beauty tips as much as the next woman, I feel the magazine reads like a "poor-chica's" Nancy Drew mystery, with all its "buy-it-for-less" ads strategically inserted in the actual articles. That smacks of editorial sell out and lack of integrity. Plus, most of the articles seem to be written for 18-22 year olds. I don't know about you, but I grew up a long time ago! Besides - Latinas (and all Latinos for that matter) have much more on their minds than the latest trends in mascara, runway fashion or shampoo! The magazine, though occassionally interesting, makes us appear two-dimensional, reinforcing negative images with its made-up language and limited editorial focus. It's as if LATINA is written for just one kind of Hispanic woman - a "Nuyorkina teen" with nothing on her mind except boys, sex and cosmetics! For a much better read about Latinos in the US and our many contributions to the arts, culture and language of America, Hispanics would do far better to read Selecciones, Cristina or People en Español. At least those magazine offer more depth, news-worthiness, and expertise on fashion, beauty and the arts. Plus, reading in spanish means nothing if real MEANING is lost in translation - something LATINA succeeds at. With made up words and VERY loose use of both languages the magazine doesn't connect with either culture or present a unifying identity. Instead it often reinforces the finger-snappin'-salsa-lovin'-big-hipped vision of women of color. That's not something Latinas need these days - we can read AND think AND shop AND learn AND work in two languages - why do we feel we have to choose one or the other? Latina seems to think we must or - GOD forbid - we'll miss out on the latest trends for Fall Fashion! Que pena! Sad thing is...advertisers seem to love it for all the wrong reasons (probably because they can read the english and dismiss the spanish.) That's too bad - our language should not be wrapped up in a neat package like LATINA as that undermines our common Hispanic identity. Instead, our bond of language should be celebrated and encouraged among Latino youth (the very target LATINA goes after.) We acculturate, not assimilate. We must incorporate the many worlds of Hispanic America (Spaniards and Boricuas, Cubanos and Argentinas, Mexicanas, Colombianas y Peruanos, etc.)through our beautiful language rather than kow-towing to advertisers and companies who dismiss us because they cannot read our words. That means they prefer we read THEIRs and at least for this reader, I CHOOSE to do both regardless of whether or not advertisers like it. Reading "en español" sets me apart and gives me an edge, plus it gives me a unique perspective I never get in LATINA. Celebrate our culture AND our language - and maintain it for generations to come --- a good magazine like People Español or Vanidades can help you do that. A poor product like LATINA just undermines our own future.

To give you a flavor of the magazine, a recent issue (May 2003) included the following articles: Awakening to the Gayatri Mantra; Postures to Activate the Lymph System for Breast Care; Awakening Spirit, A Joyful Practice: Cultivating the Moment; Really Relaxing, The Yoga Sutra: Four Pillars of Concentration, Descendants of Gods (by Huston Smith), and Everyday Ayurveda. In addition, there was a wonderful editorial offering a alternate perspective on viewing the world in these times when many people are viewing everything through a lens of fear. ... Read more
