5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Taste of Ireland
I was given a subscription as a gift back in 1995 and have been receiving this publication ever since.

The articles are varied and extremely well written. You'll find subjects as predictable as the life of St Patrick and how Waterford crystal is made to how bogs are formed and the treasures that lie within them. The photography will make you want to visit every square inch of the country and you'll think the colors have been enhanced by computer but, if you go, you'll find they are true to life!

One of my favorite regular articles is by Christopher Moriarty who suggests interesting travel on Ireland's lesser known roads in Byways rather than Highways. You can (and I do) use these ideas for trips around the country while finding out interesting facts about places most tour buses pass quickly by.

I look forward every other month to finding this magazine in the mail. Subscriptions for other magazines have come and gone but this is one I'll be getting for a long time coming. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice if it would come...
Picked up Bell'Italia in a bookstore. Loved the magazine, couldn't wait to subscribe, and I signed up for two years...It's almost two months later, and I still haven't received my first issue. So, negative-two stars for being late, but otherwise, it's a comprehensive, beautifully-put together mag.

5-0 out of 5 stars the national geographic of italy
bell italia has been around for several years for those who
read italian. only this year have they started to publish it
here in the states in english.
this magazine depicts the best italy has to offer anyone who has
any travel or cultural interest in italy.
reading an issue is almost like taking a trip there yourself.
and when you do go you will want to take the magazine along so
you don't miss anything! highly reccomended for the armchair
or serious traveller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and unsurpassed
Bell'Italia is an Italian-language magazine that is to be read and savored and then saved for when you actually get to visit the areas described. The photos and the narratives are excellent and they highlight not just those cities that are famous but those places that many tourists never get to see and that are just as deserving. Moreover, in the more famous cities like Venice and Florence, the places presented are often those that do not get much notice. In addition, the magazine highlights those restaurants and events in the area that will make the visit even more exciting. I have been a faithful subscriber for the past 6 years and never miss an issue! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rule, Britannia!
'British Heritage' has been one of my favourite magazines since my childhood. I learned much of British history, country life, culture, and style from this magazine. Despite the occasional categorisation under Archaeology in some guides and libraries, this magazine is in fact a remarkably broad-based publication that examines various aspects of British life. I think the Queen might be a bit surprised to find a story about how she spends Christmas under the heading 'Archaeology'.

In my home I have a large stack of 'British Heritage', which several decades ago incorporated the magazine 'British History Illustrated'. The quality of writing and subject matter has been remarkably consistent over the years. One will find experts in various aspects of British life among the authors: such British names such as Lord Crathorne, Victoria Sackville-West, Beryl Olive Bailey, James Stockesbury frequently show up in the contents; major scholars too, such as Norman Davies, Alison Weir, and Antonia Fraser also show up on occasion to delight the readers.

This is not a 'Royal' publication, nor is it an exclusively upper-class periodical. While one will be treated frequently to tours of the great country houses (a large number remain unknown not only to the regular tourist trails but also to the nearby residents), and regular features on the royals past and present, in 'British Heritage' one will also find a regular offering of military history, literary history and analysis (a 1981 article on the Carlyles comes to mind as particularly worthwhile), geography, geology, and yes, archaeology. Britain has a settled history spanning millenia; the pre-history goes back even further (Stonehenge is not the only pre-written-historical point of interest!).

Holiday issues often explore how Britons in different parts of the kingdom and in different historical periods celebrated, as well as tips on how to integrate these traditional and/or lost customs into one's own family celebrations.

Britain being an island, there is much of seafaring history, custom and lore that is presented. A good article on the network of canals and rivers, now much less vital for transport, appeared recently, as well as an examination of undersea gravesites and archaeological discoveries. In fact, this becomes apropos as the Government debate whether or not to disturb wreckage dating to the second world war for offshore mining; history continues into the present, and the debate is on about what is important to preserve for future generations--a constant theme in building, development and land use, which is now extending offshore.

One will find the occasion features on pubs of historic or cultural interest, a look at shopping past and present, and of course, information for the prospective and current tourist to add more of an historical dimension to the latest drive-by sighting.

'British Heritage' is not confined to the British Isles, however, and frequently includes an article on one of the colonies or commonwealth countries, particularly as those places have attempted to preserve parts of their own 'British Heritage.'

Britannia may no longer rule the waves, but it has had a profound and lasting impact on the world. This magazine helps recapture some of the spirit that made this possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, informative treat
As a long time subscriber, I have found British Heritage to be as creative and interesting a magazine as must exist. Subjects are diverse, the writing intelligent and often great fun, presentation delightful. It covers everything from history (for which it is a goldmine - there are unexpected and fascinating topics in each issue) to wonderful places to visit to ideas for a perfect afternoon tea.

Another distinguishing feature of this magazine is that it is solid journalism and creative, scholarly writing. Though it would be valuable to travellers (the more for those who spend a good deal of time in England), it is not aimed at tourists, nor is it a publication with a primary aim at increasing tourism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Samples of Britain
British Heritage magazine is great for articles on all different topics pertaining to the British Isles. It does not focus on one area, but each issue has articles on various topics, from a trip through the Northern coast of Scotland and the history of the area, to celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II. The magazine does focus on the history of areas, people and ideas, but is diverse. it gives you a nice sense of the country, the people and their past, as well as places to visit and sites to see. Overall it's very well written and interesting to read, at a fraction of what other british magazines cost here in the States. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME magazine
I subscribed to this magazine for my son three years ago... when he was in the third grade. It is packed full of great information about the particular topic it covers. Each issue is devoted to one particular topic, and we (yes "we") look forward to each and every issue. It is easy to read, but also quite comprehensive. It is a great jumping off point for studying more into a particular topic in history, or as a reference. If you subscribe, make room on your shelves... because you will NOT throw these away. 5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars In Content, But 1 Star For Targeted Audience
The content of this entire magazine is absolutely wonderful. Hence, the five stars. However, in the magazine's attempt to reach an "affluent, educated audience of senior business executives, thought leaders, and policy makers," I feel that it has somehow alienated itself from the average Joe Normal who might be reached otherwise, but who never will, simply because he doesn't understand the "$10.00 words" many of the writers feel necessary to use when getting their point across. For whatever reasons, some writers feel the need to express themselves in terms completely foreign to the average reader's mind by using words that sound impressive but whose meaning often eludes the average reader. I believe in the power of the printed word. I also believe that if one is a truly gifted writer, he or she will have the ability to be able to express themselves in such a way so as to reach ALL audiences, not just a select few. After all, shouldn't that be the intent of any magazine or newspaper - to educate the public, and not just a certain element? In the past, when sitting down to read some of the magazine's articles, I've had to read whole paragraphs over at least three or four times in order to figure out what the writer could have set in one or two simple sentences. I respectfully suggest that if you are a gifted and informed writer, your gift and knowledge will shine through without the use of $10.00 words and terminology unfamiliar to the average Joe. This is a wonderful magazine. I respectfully suggest, however, that it might wish to consider targeting a larger audience for educational purposes (given so much inaccurate reporting in the news media concerning Israel), and that in order to do so, it will have to ditch many of the $10.00 words some of the writers are so bent on using.

5-0 out of 5 stars I look foward to each new issue
I find the varying views expressed in this excellent bi-weekly to be representative of a large part of the broad spectrum of political views of the interested parties in Israel and the worldwide Jewish community.

And the Jerusalem Report also makes a great gift!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Left
Both "The Jerusalem Report" & "The Jerusalem Post" are owned by the same company. One is the 'left-wing' version of the news, the other is the 'right-wing'. Why do I mention this? So you won't be fooled (as the other reviewer was) into thinking that either of these are "moderate". There is absolutely NO moderate or unbiased reporting about this from anybody - - not even "The Economist" (The Brits are the ones who... up this country to begin with; how can they be unbiased?).

You want to understand or have a balanced view of the situation from the Israeli perspective? Read both "The Jerusalem Report" & "The Jerusalem Post" and then try to come to some conclusion yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Opens up an entirely different an surreal world....
I have no idea why I subscribed to this magazine but I have been receiving it for 3 years now and simply cannot bring myself to cancel the subscription. I am not Jewish nor am I a Jewish sympathizer. I am a simple Anglo Protestant unmarried female. The viewpoint of 'The Jerusalem Report' seems to me to be relatively moderate, or at least as "moderate" as things can be in that part of the world. But everything in that part of the world is so "unmoderate" compared to everything in the United States. Since September 11, perhaps we Americans have altered our viewpoint a little, but probably VERY little in reality. The issue that initially dealt with the terrorist events of September 11 mainly seemed to say Hey, this is what we have been telling you, but we live this every day. I cannot image living that terror every day. I read the columns and the stories, and reread them, and still I don't understand. But I keep reading. How else can I learn. ... Read more

From Amazon.com

Published by New York's treasured American Museum of Natural History, Natural History gives a monthly peek into current goings-on in the broad realm of natural history and science. Dinosaur buffs, world travelers, animal lovers, stargazers, birders, and history fanatics alike will find articles and photographs to pique their interests. Less weighty than its chief peer, National Geographic, Natural History takes the armchair traveler into the world of bugs, archeological excavations, and the rest of the universe. Without ever reading like a specialized journal, the magazine creates an intelligent and in-depth discussion of each topic, and articles are illustrated with photographs, drawings, charts, and maps. Perhaps because National Geographic covers so much cultural and physical ground, Natural History features more focused articles on scientific discovery. Still, it's a glimpse into a vast world, and a good substitute for a monthly visit to the Museum of Natural History. --Gilia Angell ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my oppinion

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Articles
This is an outstanding journal. The articles are diverse, informative, and current. Other than possibly Scientific American, there is not better journal for the life sciences.

An earlier reviewer critized the journal for not using the metric system. Personally, I do not find this to be a problem with a journal which is primarly qualitative and not quantitative.

3-0 out of 5 stars It an ok magazine
Having read a few copies of these magazine I'm left with mix feelings. I'll admit I'm tempted to subscribe - if only for the lovely pictures. On second thought I might be better off subscribing to National Geographic. I'll also admit the articles are well written and informative. The problem I had with this magazine is that it does not use the metric system! This might sound silly, but once your use to reading science magazines with it, reading one without it seems idiotic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome magazine
This magazine is awesome. Great articles and photos! Very professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only quality choice
Majesty magazine is one of two magazines that I purchase every month without exception. The articles and pictures contained within are of the highest quality. Focusing on the British Royal family the magazine never fails to impress with informative historical information about the Royal Palaces and their occupants. Each month the magazine reports on current events involving members of the Royal family with colour pictures to accompany the articles. If you don't live in Britain and don't have the chance to attend events where members of the Royal family will be then this is as good as it gets. Majesty is always a fascinating read and quite frankly I couldn't live without it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The average fish in a very small sea
I fear - and I mean this in a kindly and supportive way - that Majesty has had the run of the playground for far too long. There was a brief period in the latter '80's when Royalty was giving it some worthy competition, but even that magazine has deteriorated so far in quality that it is no longer a serious contender. I have read Majesty every month for 19 years. Other issues have been better than others, but it was generally reliable in a matronly aunt kind of way. My criticism is that it seems to be entirely lacking in, well, criticism. There are only so many times you can read about the dear old Queen Mother and her delightful spending habits. Even her death hasn't stemmed the tide. Diana, Princess of Wales, made for fantastic copy. She was beautiful, young, exciting, and complicated. And people would far rather read about complicated people than about steady, reliable types. The Queen, for example. Majesty Magazine made no secret that it, or rather the editor Ingrid Seward, did not care for the Princess when she was alive. I found this to be amazingly ignorant - not just because I found the Princess rather fascinating, but because an awful lot of other people did, too. Majesty has for years seemed to have been engaged in a resentful tug of war with the hand that fed its coffers. Having been handed a publisher's dream, they spent 15 years in tight-lipped disapproval and after her death in resolute denial. Refusing to report on the more sensational stories of the Royal Family - which would seem to be their raison d'etre, wouldn't it? - has caused Majesty's stories and reporting to become ever more recycled and bland to the point of tedium. After spending years eagerly looking forward to my monthly copy, I can barely summon the interest to glance at it in the newsagent's. It didn't have to be this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars superfantastic
I've been getting this magazine since it first came out years ago, and every issue is just as exciting as the first. It not only gives you the military aspect of events, but often goes into detail as to how and why these events occured, which is invaluable in itself. I can't wait for the next issue to come out, and wish it would come out more often. And the fact that it comes in hardcover format makes a nice presentation on my bookshelf. Thank you MHQ

4-0 out of 5 stars Wide-ranging, thorough study of military history
MHQ is perhaps the most in-depth publication of military history that is regularly available. The range of subjects span from ancient history and the battles of the Greeks, Romans, Chinese and others, to what has happened in the last 15 years/ Desert Storm.

Most of the authors are very experienced, and the names of most of them can be found in your favorite bookstore's History section. Maps and photos help illustrate everything, and the magazine itself holds up a lot better with time than most thin-papered pages. It is surprisingly durable.

I have used this magazine many times in preapring material for my history classes, and while it can by dry in some points, and certain topics aren't always in my interest area, its scholarly and informative efforts make it a far better than average magazine in its scope and quality. In short, its biggest drawback may be its quarterly issuance, since it seems to not come out often enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars For English patriots
This large format quality magazine is attractive and well-produced. It mostly celebrates the England of between the wars and just after WW2. Don't confuse this with a BRITISH magazine; it is definitely English and proud of it, and champions English values and customs of the 1930's, 40's, and 50's and takes a strong anti-Europe stand. It is well written and illustrated but is published only four times a year. Don't forget St George's Day on April 23! 5-0 out of 5 stars This is easily my favorite magazine
I wish this magazine came out more often (as another reviewer said). It would be fascinating for anyone with the slightest interest in the history of technology and engineering. Recent articles have covered vaccuum tubes, their history, and why some are still used now, and nuclear power and how that industry stalled in America. I remember reading another article in the mid-'90s about a guy in New York City who shoveled coal for a public school furnace. He explained his job and how hard it was to buy a coal shovel (the hardware store people couldn't believe it). A few years later they followed up with a note that all public schools in NYC had been converted from coal, and that the coal-shoveler's job was MUCH easier maintaining the new furnace. Stories on iron bridges and how Necco wafers are made (with the same machine for 100 years or so) and how buttons are made from seashells and how paper clips are made and how a Hollywood actress designed a frequency-jumping weapons guidance system and all sorts of others are included. Lots of cool articles about how everyday (and not-so-common) technologies went from ideas in someone's mind to products that are ready for use.

5-0 out of 5 stars History of technology for the layman.
Of all the magazines I currently subscribe to, I have had this one the longest. Short, concise articles on everyday items are written for the layman and really open up the history of technology to the reader. I just wish I would have kept all the issues from the start of my subscription.

5-0 out of 5 stars Needs to come out more often!
I read every issue cover to cover, information on a variety of technology related subjects. All the articles are well researched and informative. Unfortunately it only comes four times a year! Think Wired Magazine meets Smithsonian Magazine. Should appeal to engineers of all types especially.

A sampling of past articles:
'When Bridges fail and the inexact science of preventing it'

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best in its field
Given the popularity of history, and especially historical books in recent years, it is surprising how few magazines attempt to bridge the gap between the scholarly periodicals aimed at academics and two page features in magazines devoted to other subjects (or general interest). Those that do mostly concentrate on either family or military history.

History Today, by contrast, takes in the whole field of history, from biographies, through archaeology and individual events to large scale surveys. The success of these articles does vary, but most are written by active and respected scholars, with a leavening of "popular history" writers.

In this limited market, History Today excels in having 5 to 6 main articles, which give the writers a reasonable chance to provide some substance. These articles are probably twice the length, and three times the substance of those in the otherwise comparable BBC History Magazine.

On the other hand, some of the shorter articles in the magazine are entirely disposable.

1-0 out of 5 stars monumental disappointment
i first subscribed to this magazine decades ago, when its format was smaller, more elegant and more user-friendly, and when the content was not an insult to the reader's intelligence. then, even my friend the snobbish PhD in history called it "a good magazine for amateurs."

in the three issues i have received so far, there has been a distinct religious bias, which, considering the actual span of world history, is inexcusable. one issue concerned itself with two movies, one a new release which was enthusiastically reviewed, leading me to wonder if the magazine had been bought out by a film company.

the quality of the writing is not what i remember, neither is the scholarship, what there is of it. the illustrations also fall far, far short of the quality of yesteryear.

this magazine, in my opinion, is the print equivalent of the television programs that are aimed at an audience believed to be uneducated, uninformed, unclutured, and incapable of logic or critical thought.

i regret wasting my money on it. ... Read more

I've learned so much about the history of our country from this magazine. If you have an interest in archaeology and want to learn about the truths of the Americas past, get this magazine. It's worth every penny. Learn about the many cover ups of the truth. Learn about the great white race of people who were exterminated by the indians hundreds of years before Columbus set foot on this continent. Learn about the great races of the past. Every month I read each issue from front to back.
