Easily the best political magazine in the country
In addition to The American Enterprise, I have subscribed in recent years to National Review, Weekly Standard, and Commentary. I find The American Enterprise easily the most impressive and enjoyable of the four. Many of their issues are simply tremendous.

There is something morbid and negative in many conservative magazines and books these days, but TAE is not one of them. There is great optimism, and balance, and historical wisdom in each issue. The angles are fresh and unhackneyed; I regularly read facts and arguments I have never, ever heard anywhere else. And I read a lot.

Best of all, the writing (and illustration) is beautiful. I have come to anticipate each issue, knowing that it will bring a feast for the mind. And a feast which is as refreshing in presentation as it is nourishing in content.

Looking back at this review, I'm kind of embarrassed at how I've gushed, but that's honestly how I feel about this publication. I've got to say I've never seen anything like The American Enterprise anywhere else. It is enormously smart and enjoyable.

Politics, Business and Culture - Factually Correct vs PC
Consistently, The American Enterprise Institute takes the lead in providing reasoned, researched and beautifully written opinion-forming commentary. In September 2002, The American Enterprise Magazine excoriated the fable of Campus Diversity with an eye opening analysis of the lopsided political leanings of university faculty. The result was a public debate in the editorial and letters pages of major "daily's" across the country. In December, the Continental Drift with Old Europe was profiled, spelling out the script subsequently followed by Chirac and Schroeder. 2003 has provided a wonderful issue on the Civil War just in time for the release of Gods and Generals. George W. Bush selected the American Enterprise Institute to unveil his long term strategy for the Middle East, and once you become a reader of the magazine, you will know why. American Enterprise fellows include Lynne Cheney, Robert Bork, Dinesh D'Sousa, Christina Hoff Sommers, Jeanne Kirkpatrick and others.

Love this Magazine--great travel tips &insight into culture
This magazine has beautiful photography and excellent articles.

It covers all of German speaking Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) as well as covering German events in the United States.

There are often historical articles and nostalgic pieces as well as news stories and editorials. I especially like the travel advice as it is often for areas off the beaten path.

I end up reading it cover to cover each issue

Lots of wurst, but not much meat
I bought a subscription for my mother (Munchen born, still has accent) last year for christmas. I had never seen the magazine on a news stand, so I took a chance. She was very happy to get it and she said she liked the stories. Her complaint being that there wasn't enough in it to keep her interested or wanting a renewal. I glanced through a copy and echoed her review. She enjoyed the pictures and often took the magazine to work to show her co-workers places she had been etc.

If you are looking for a quick read with TONS of advertisements for wurst and other german items, get a copy.

Okay, it's hokey. But I pick it up every time I see it.
I'm finally ordering a subscription to German Life magazine. I've been buying it on the newstand for at least six months (maybe closer to a year), so I must admit to myself that I like it.

This is definitely a magazine for the German-American lifestyle. Each issue has articles about destinations in Germany, about German crafts, or an event going on. But the publishers are well-aware that the audience is in North America. so there are articles about geneaology and other topics of interest to the folks back home. And it may be worth reading simply for the advertisements -- plenty of companies selling German goods have ads in here, so you can find a source from which to buy a beer stein or knockwurst.

Don't expect great literature. This isn't the finest, deepest prose you'll encounter, but then that's not the point. It's an enjoyable read, particularly if you want to take a virtual trip to somewhere else. ... Read more
