5-0 out of 5 stars As always a great magazine
I have always LOVED Southern Living magazine. You can be assured that if you cook from the recipes contained in this magazine, they will usually be very delicious. I used to subscribe just for the recipes. I now also enjoy the articles on travel and on decorating. This is a great "home" magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best for Home Decor, Travel and Food
I've just renewed my subscription to Southern Diving for the 12th time -- that's 12 years of the very best in home design, interior decoration, gardening, recipes and travel. My favorite feature is the Southern Journal that's always (now) on the back page -- this is a slice-of-life vignette of the little details that those of us who grew up in the Old South recognize -- and identify with -- at first glance. Subjects range from the front porch to hush puppies to SEC football to sweet tea and usually transport us into treasured memories.

Although the magazine seems to be mostly appreciated for recipes (and the holiday issues especially are a treasure of traditional and stylish treats), Southern Living's travel pages are full of information on the best destinations in the South. Each month there's at least one, and often more, in-depth piece about some unusual and fascinating place to visit.

The magazine features home designs, interior decoration and some sort of project -- instructions for making a complicated drapery valance or how to install a glass buffet shelf or the best way to organize a closet.

I've subscribed to all the home magazines over the years but SL is the one I've been faithful to. I've traveled to new places, made their projects and cooked their food, all to a chorus of compliments and accolades from family and friends.

Seems like there should be a reward for faithfulness in terms of subscription rate savings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thick magazine full of color gardening photos and reviews.
I just moved to the South so I thought I better learn about the area! This is a fun magazine. It's very thick, with sections on vacation spots, restaurant reviews, garden how-tos, home remodeling, and lots of recipes. I've already learned how to eat a steamed crab and that there are bed and breakfasts on islands off the Georgia coast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rip Off
GREAT Magazine...BUT, Do NOT order through this site. They will charge you $19.97 on your credit card, then send you a bill in the mail for $32.00. You are getting ripped off!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just really interesting stuff
The recipes are always too hard for me... well, o.k. I COULD make them, but anything with 15 steps--I am not interested. But the articles are intresting... the pictures are lush, and the magazine informative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Sunsets
I have been a subscriber of Sunset magazine for 25 years. my first subscription was received in Texas and at that time our area was not included so was not impressed, but dreamed of being able to travel to the places in wonderful articles about California. Then I moved to Southern California and there I was very much interested in the magazine diffrently. There are always interesting recipies, gardening articles, places to go, and beautiful pictures. On a cold winter night when there is much rain looking at the beautiful pictures changes sadness into gladness. I give subscriptions as gifts to my adult children and they very much enjoy the articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome magazine in every respect
This magazine has it all! Excellent travel information, great decorating and gardening ideas, and wonderful recipes. It is extremely well organized, and the advertisement layout keeps the articles in the forefront.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for gardener's in the west
The rest of the country be...well, anyway, the problem with most gardening books and magazines is they seem to be speaking to people who live in the tundra for 1/2 the year. Those whom God has blessed by ordaining us to live in the wonderful west do not have that problem. So it becomes tedious each year to read about how to "winter" your garden when you are still weeding and caring for it and would probably fined for stopping. This magazine is the answer to that annoyance.

Aside from gardening information they also have ideas for decorating and camping and other family fun things. The only annoyance in this magazine can be found in their recipe section. It is nothing if not gourmet. To be perfectly honest, in CA I don't have time to be a gourmet cook. The weather is too nice to be stuck inside doing all that work. But, I do use their recipes once/month to have our "formal" meal. And they are quite delicious.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tries To Be Too Much For Too Many
The Sunset Western Garden Book is the definitive reference for anyone gardening in the west, but if you're expecting Sunset Magazine to be the definitive periodical for gardening in the west, you'll be disappointed.

Each issue includes sections on gardening, travel, foods, home, and even books. After you subtract the ads, gardening content is down in the 10% range. And within that small section, the magazine tries to have something relevant for all western areas, from Alaska to Arizona to Idaho to Oregon, and everyplace in between. When they omit an area, the following month you'll see a letter to the editor complaining about it.

The other sections have similar issues. The travel section has to have destinations in every region. The food section has to have regional cuisine from every region. The home section even has to feature homes in every region.

Living alone, I don't cook much, let alone prepare fancy dishes. My biggest decorating issue is keeping the clutter down. The only travel I do is the commute to work. And I'd rather read books than read about books. I also don't care much about gardens in climates vastly different than my own, so I have no interest in the obligatory tropical plants covers. That leaves only a handful of pages that interest me.

If you're a well-rounded person, with interests in more areas than just gardening, you may well find Sunset an interesting magazine. The articles are all well written. The whole magazine is the highest level of quality. They do a great job of writing about everything they write about. It's just that their scope is just far too wide to be a comprehensive guide to living in such a diverse area as the west.

If you like Better Homes and Gardens, and you live in the west, you'll love Sunset Magazine. If you're looking for an extension of their definitive books on gardening in the west, you'll be disappointed by how little relevant content you'll find each month.

One other thing to mention: Sunset Magazine has made most of their website available only to subscribers, unless you're on AOL. So if you want to get to any of their excellent online content, you might want to subscribe even if there only is enough content in the print magazine to hold your attention for the walk from the mailbox to the door.

Overall, it's a great magazine that simply spreads itself too thin by trying to cover too much for too many different people. You may even find you can finish the parts that interest you while waiting in line at the grocery store check-out counter.

On the other hand, if your interest include all of the departments (gardening, food, home, travel and books), and you're interested in all the regions that make up the western United States, then don't hesitate a minute longer. Subscribe. I'm just not that well rounded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish i still subscribed!
I have many years' worth of bound copies of this treasure of a magazine. I lived in Southern California for 3 years in the early 80s and it was a magazine I really became addicted to, even after moving back to the East Coast. I subscribed for years after. When I was married, this helped me so much with home ideas, not to mention fabulous recipes that really, for the most part, never seem dated. The ideas I got from this magazine! It really helped me grow and see things differently. I can't bring myself to get rid of the many years of bound copies that I have. Such a classy publication! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of European, Not Much Southern
Anyone who thinks this is representative of "Southern", is definitely not Southern. I found the flavor of the magazine to be strictly European. The two biggest points of contention were the number of advertisements and the coverage of overblown, ostentatious European decor. There are no real Southern influences on any of the interior pictorials shown. You can find a number of beautiful, understated Southern homes that have stayed true to their original decor- they are out there- just not in this particular magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars comfort and elegance
This is a lovely magazine, with lots of articles on Southern style and luxurious living. Every issue has "Accents", showing what is new and trendy and where to buy it; "Calendar", for events and exhibitions worth seeing, and "Educated Eye", with advice on what to look for to evaluate antique furniture, etc. if you are a serious collector.

There are features on beautiful gardens, art and museums, antiques and shopping, design and entertaining tips, but mostly it is about tasteful homes and the people who own them.
There is a relaxed atmosphere to what we see of these rooms and terraces, as if people really live in the environment, and not (as is sometimes seen in magazines of this type) that a decorator has gussied the place up for the photographer. It is friendly elegance, with grace and charm.
With six issues a year, good quality glossy paper, wonderful photography, and even some interesting ads (many from stores located in Dallas, Atlanta and New Orleans), this is a magazine I look forward to receiving.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best decorating magazine!
I subscribe to all of the home and garden magazines and Southern Accents is the best, bar none. The houses featured are absolutely dreamy--the photography is gorgeous--and while the magazine doesn't offer how-to decorating ideas, there is so much inspiration. I find it to be intelligently written...which is rare in a decorating magazine. The articles on antiques are particularly informative. This magazine will appeal to anyone who is interested in beautiful, classic design--whether or not you live in the South! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative articles for Bay Area residents
I received San Francisco magazine as a gift a few years ago and at first assumed that it would simply be a way to keep up with restaurant reviews and the like for the city (I live about 35 miles east in the suburbs). After reading a few issues, though, it became clear that a number of the articles are very well written and provide great information and entertainment for residents of San Francisco and beyond. I am thinking of recent articles about Willie Brown (by Joan Walsh), Jim Jones Jr. (by Pamela Feinsilber), and the June 2003 "Green Issue." Some of the articles/features are less relevant to me, but there is always something interesting to read each time a new issue appears in my mailbox. I wish that there was more coverage of restaurants and cultural events in Contra Costa County (where I live), but this is San Francisco magazine after all! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solidly Excellent
These days, most architecture and lifestyle design magazines seem to feel the need to come with a whimsical or avant-garde name to stand out. WESTERN INTERIORS has decided on substance instead.

If your design sense is post modern with dashes of American Western simplicity/rustic with modern Pacific Rim elements - this is the magazine for you. It showcases 'example' homes and gardens that you can emulate or re-model towards.

Of course, everything is at the high-end - after all, lifestyle mags are about aspiration but it is all approached and presented in a refreshingly straightforward manner. This is not a pretentious magazine with coverage of garish McMansions or fadish pop art design style some people might associate with the West Coast.

It tells its stories through sharp, large and numerous photographs and simple, direct details about the property. The coverage on new furnishings is also direct and with relevant photographs.

They also cover western real estate, art and relevant western U.S. stories such as vacation getaways with online or phone links for more information.

As a relatively new magazine, if you haven't seen it on the news stand, it emulates the clean design & feel of the architecture & design section in SUNSET MAGAZINE (Sunset, a fine magazine itself - of course only devotes about 5-8 pages a month to architecture & design).

So, if you like SUNSET MAGAZINE and wish there was more architecture & design coverage, you will deinitely appreciate & like this magazine.

It is a classy, simple and cleanly designed magazine devoted to California & West Coast architecture and design. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AD for Those Who Really Live in Their Homes
This magazines is the AD for what's happening now, for those who actually live in their homes. It has all the wonderful production values of AD, but it is warm, inviting and "diy-able."

Their website is approachable, too. Unlike AD, there is no firewall between the consumer and the designer/advertiser.

That's why this subscription is valuable to people who live in homes at every economic level. The design work is beautiful, timeless and available. This is the mark of great design, great publishing, great Internetting.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy Articles about Spas and Cooking
Well, in the November issue last year, this magazine had a spa getaway section. Now I know why so many people were in La Conner the last time I was there. There is a top-secret spa hiding there. Who knew! I love La Conner and had no idea there was a day spa there.

They also featured the "Salish Lodge and Spa" at which you might find me drinking tea with my parents on a lazy afternoon or having dinner when I'm feeling like splurging on a gourmet dinner. They have redecorated, however they still have a wonderful fireplace upstairs. I spent the first night of my honeymoon at the Salish Lodge and I can't wait to stay there again. They have deep baths and the entire experience of staying there is just luxurious. Anyway, this magazine tells you where to go and gives you ideas for luxurious getaways now and then. Oh and don't forget Rosario. When my aunt took us away for the weekend, we had our toes painted while sitting out in the sun.

If you are thinking of visiting Seattle, this is a good magazine to keep handy so you can find out about treasures like the Elliot Bay Book Company or Pike Place Market. The Dining Guide will lad you to places you only thought appeared in dreams. If you are in Seattle, go to Palisade. There is an amazing view, gourmet food to die for and even a fish pond with a cute bridge you can walk over. We love this place for family parties. Ray's boathouse has an upstairs café we love and then there is the Metropolitan Grill where you will taste steaks that have been grilled over mesquite coals. If you want to go all out and enjoy a nine-course feast, try The HerbFarm that is now located in Woodinville. Chef Jerry Traunfeld also makes amazing Lavender cookies and the recipe is in his HerbFarm cookbook.

This magazine inspires thoughts of staying at the Edgewater hotel and watching ferries sail by on lazy rainy days. You will always find intriguing features, talk about the town and a section on enjoying the good life of food and entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luxurious Living in the Rainy City
Actually, living in Seattle is not always a drizzly experience. Don't tell anyone, but the summers in Seattle are absolutely amazing. Winter isn't too bad either because the climate is fairly mild. I lived there for many years and one of the things I noticed is the "homes." There are unique and beautiful homes all over Seattle that definitely appeal to the aesthetically aware. I have never lived in any area where there were so many unique and artistic designs.

"Seattle Homes and Lifestyles" celebrates the good life, provides a few tasty recipes and explores gardening ideas. They focus on life, style and home. If you live in Seattle or visit quite often, you will find the Life/calendar section useful to keep up with cultural events and celebrations.

A unique feature in this magazine is the "Serving Seattle" section where you can find events and opportunities for giving.

I adore the recipe section, which is always enticing. There are also full-page ads for various neighborhoods with website information and ideas about taking walking tours.

Yes, there is a lot of upscale advertising and "design dreams." If you love gardening, look for the Home/garden planner section. This way, you can keep up with your gardening and get lots of ideas for each season.

This magazine is a beautiful reminder of the good life. Seattle is one of my favorite places to live and work and this is a reminder of a city I'll always love. To me, Seattle will always be home.
