2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Research News has some positive aspects. There are interesting articles on the bridges between spirituality and science, on research into the psychology of spirituality, on Intelligent Design theory. But the majority of every issue is devoted to terse, dry, bland descriptions of conferences on science and religion.Conferences that sound like they would have been very interesting to attend, or even to read the papers presented there. But what we receive in Research News is more of a litany of what was said, with little substance. After the articles on various conferences, every issue also focuses extensively on ethereal subjects such as the nature of love.Love is an important subject, and it is good that people write about it.But the articles in Research News aren't written scientifically. One comes to the magazine hoping for a discussion of the spiritual and scientific worlds, and real, scholarly research. But most of the articles are more philosophical in nature, and not very deep at that. One gets the impression that the original authors or persons being discussed, presenting their views, had a lot of really deep thoughts on various matters- but the articles discussing them do not, in the majority of cases. It would be far more interesting to have in-depth articles on the effect that science has on one's religion, and the effect of one's religion on one's scientific endeavors. And there's a little of that, towards the back of each magazine. But too little. To get more, I'd recommend Science & Spirit instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stimulating magazine with high professional standards.
In the recent past this magazine has evolved into a highly effective source of news and information on current issues in the field of science and religion. The editors have discovered a niche in the market, in that contributions by well-known scholars and experts are presented in the form of interviews or essays, which combine high scholarly standards with a degree of personal spontaneity in a way, that the rigors of formal professional publications do not allow. This makes for stimulating reading and has created a worthwhile periodical that I give my highest rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, interesting, controversial
I've been getting the newspaper for about 18 months now, and find that it is one of the best investments of... I've ever made.As a health professional who is also interested in religion, this helps me to stay updated on the research that's coming out, it's application to my patients, and interesting books on the topic of religion and health that people are writing. Also, they have some controversial point - counterpoint discussions that they print that get me to thinking about these issues.Bravo -- job well done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars really is the best
I love turing people on to this magazine, they always love it, like I do!
Nature's Best is amazing. The design is incredible, the photography is never short of stunning. I like it better than National Geographic! Plus the company does great thigns for environmental protection and awarenwess. A beautiful magazine and great cause.
Anyone who loves beautiful photographs (without cluttered ads) and an allover high quality publication needs to check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showcasing Some of the Best in Nature Photography
Nature's Best is a quarterly magazine (4 issues per year) dedicated to showcasing the best in nature photography today. It's format is slightly larger than standard at 9x11 inches. Each issue is around 100 pages in length with almost no advertising. In addition to subscriptions, the magazine is funded by a handful of corporate sponsors, who account for the only advertising in the magazine, and that only amounts to a few pages.

Most of the space in Nature's Best is dedicated to photographs. Most of the photos are pretty large, some even spanning two pages. The paper is of a quality comparable to National Geographic and depicts the color and clarity of the photographs very well. Nature's Best seems to be dedicated to color nature photography; I have never seen a black-and-white photograph in the magazine. But I don't know if their policies actually prohibit black-and-white. A typical issue has 5 feature articles, which are comprised mostly of photographs, usually accompanied by descriptive essays. Subjects range from landscape to macro photography and from one end of the Earth to the other, so to speak. Both plant and wildlife photography are well-represented. There are also a few pages in each issue dedicated to conservation news, book reviews, contest and workshop announcements, interesting wildlife facts, recommended websites, and other bits of useful information relating to nature or nature photography.

Nature's Best Fall issue is different in content from the other issues, however. Nature's Best and Cemex (one of their corporate sponsors) sponsor an annual International Photography Contest that is commonly held to be one of the most prestigious nature photography contests in the world today. Every year, Nature's Best dedicates its Fall issue entirely to the winning photographs from that contest.

Nature's Best is eye candy for the nature lover and is a terrific publication for anyone who enjoys great photography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars back to people
There was a time when people had names and so did their animals. Everyone felt safe, had common sense, and practiced common courtesy. This magazine is from these people. Lynn Miller, founder, will fascinate you with ideas, a humble attitude, and the truth. The letters section is now my favorite. In this section, people go out of their way to help other people with problems only because they can. It is also very entertaining as it is not edited. Even if you don't farm with horses or ever intend to farm, read this magazine. It is not full of advertisements or people telling you what to buy and why. (My husband and I have attended some farm progress days. The people there are neighbors you would want to live next door to.) Small farmers rock. Don't believe the adverisements. They don't stutter or drool. Our best presidents were not lawyers, but true farmers, stewarts of the land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!!
Wow. I've seen & read lots of magazines that say they support "small" farmers, but not ones like me who actually still use horses on their farm. This one really is amazing. It's sort of like browsing through all those old farm magazines your Granddad had stored up in the attic from the 20s and 30s, but with all the information updated and useable for today. There is just everything in this mag. Draft horses galore, even oxen!! All being used on farms or for logging or county fair shows. And lots of other great stuff too. Like making real maple syrup from sap collected by your own family, or how to grow better tomatos. Lots of information on livestock and rare breeds too. If you have a small farm, whether you use horses or not you really should see this magazine. I was hooked from the moment i saw my first copy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive
I have read this magazine for more than twenty years now, so I can say I am addicted. I like to keep informed of what is happening on the science, technology, and policy front. I find the shorter and lighthearted articles ideal for this. The reader does get a good dose of the famous British humour. I can not read the Feedback section without laughing aloud. I also respect New Scientist for daring to take political stances, and exposing bad governmental science policies, or even tackling the environmental movement if they stoop to using questionable science.

5-0 out of 5 stars non scientific view
i have found that this magazine is ideal for the layman.even the most difficult subjects are dealt with such that i can follow them. the range covered is facinating. i look forward to each weeks edition and enjoy every one.it doesnot blind one with science rather it opens ones mind. cannot recommend highly enough. i would award 10 out of 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best science magazine available!
This magazine is by far the best I have read. It includes real, cutting edge science of every field. The diversity and insight the articles bring have made it a must have. I am currently finishing up my undergrad degrees in physics, math and neuroscience and this magazine offers up to date research in all fields. One suggestion, but one off the newstand and subscribe through the included leaflet-only fifty one dollars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best
I've read many, many science magazines from "Discovery" and "Scientific American" through professional journals (astronomy and computer science) and I can say without qualification that "New Scientist" is the very best. The quality of writing is high and the articles are cutting-edge science, plus an "Inside Science" in-depth feature (the issue I'm currently reading has a lead-in to its 'Inside Science' article: "They eat stars for breakfast. They flout the laws of physics. But do black holes really exist and what would you see if you fell into one?") The side-texts connected to the article are labelled: "Don't Panic!;" "Spaceman Turns to Spaghetti;" and "Black Hole Factories on Earth. There are illustrations of the evolution of a star into a black hole, "The Tardis Effect," "How the Sky Falls in," and "Signals from a Binary System." There are also references to websites and printed literature for further research.

The writing in "New Scientist" is not as stodgy as in "Scientific American" and not as watered-down as in "Discovery." Plus it comes every week (more or less, since I live in America and it ships from Great Britain). I usually sit down and read it from cover to cover, even the NewScientist Jobs section (which is now taylored for Americans if that's where you happen to live).

If you subscribe to "New Scientist," you are also given access to their online archive of articles.

Two drawbacks: "New Scientist" is rather pricey and many of the jokes are incomprehensibly British. ... Read more
