5-0 out of 5 stars Una revista muy chevere
This magazine is wonderful if you are looking for a magazine that is easy to read, entertaining and yet informative all in one. It is geared toward the Latin community but I think it could also interest anyone who speaks Spanish and has a love for the culture. I started buying this magazine regularly in 1998 and I am still a fan of People en espanol. At first glance one may think that it's the Spanish version the weekly People magazine in English but believe me the only element in common is the title. This magazine has a section on "la farándula" and "en familia" which I find always nice to read and sometimes there are good articles about infants and kids that give helpful tips about childcare. There are other informative sections that you can read according to your personal preference. Lastly, the quality of the Spanish is very good in comparison to other magazines in its class in which I have found major grammar errors on a regular basis. This magazine is worth every cent and can be read through an through.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than the regular people magazine
I have been learning Spanish for several years now, but when I started out my teacher recommended People in espanol. When I got good enough at reading spanish, I started reading it. It is an awesome magazine, much better than its English counterparts. You won't find the same people over and over in the magazine, and the magazine seems to have more of a personal touch to it. The pages are more colorful and there are quizzes and other puzzles, as well as informative articles that are not the typical fluff of this magazine's english counterpart. It introduced me to a different culture as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Spanish Language Magazine in the US
People en Espanol is a magazine ALL Latinos can be proud of. A solid editorial mix of current events, celebrities, trends, fashion and nostalgia, the magazine is journalistically far superior to other titles for the same audience. Not only are its reporting standards superb, the magazine provides a wonderful range of stories every month. Unlike "TV & Novelas" which is all gossip-all-the-time, or "Latina" which is written in "spanglish" or even "Selecciones" which appeals to my parents, "People en Espanol" offers a genuine high-integrity alternative in Spanish that truly makes it unique, relevent and dynamic. The stories are interesting, the information valuable, and the photos vibrant....like our culture!

Moreover, it's not a knock-off of the US version of People Weekly - in fact, very little of its coverage draws from the US title, so that the editorial is fresh and relevant to the Latino audience, not matter if the reader is Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, South American or Dominican. That alone makes it very special. In a culture where each subgroup seems self-isolated, this magazine works hard to focus on the ties that bind our communities rather than the ones that seem to drive us apart.

It's a magazine I am proud to subscribe to, and one I have given to countless friends as a gift. They love it, and you'll love it too!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars el primero, y el mejor
Vanidades is without a doubt the best Spanish language magazine for women, with a wide range of subject matter, good quality paper, and excellent photography.
It has a lot of news from Hollywood, as well as the latest "royal" gossip; a recent issue for instance had an article entitled "Celos de Reinas", on the less than friendly relations between the current and ex queens of Jordan. The July 2003 issue, has "Asi Vive Harry", a marvelous spread on England's young prince, showing his art, which is imaginitive and colorful, and a photo of him as a cadet in a camouflage uniform that will make young hearts flutter, showing that Prince Harry is turning into a serious hunk !

As an example of content, the July '03 issue also has: Two pages of Colombian artist Fernando Botero's massive sculptures; a tour of London, with advice on where to stay, shop, and dine; many pages devoted to make-up and fashion; Martha Stewart "¿Por qué la persiguen ?"; from Italy, the wedding of Zulemita, the daughter of Argentina's Carlos Menem; a section on decor (in this month the theme is bathrooms), and lots of yummy recipes; a serialized biography of Jackie Kennedy, a short novella, which is romantic "lite reading", and much more.
A big plus for me, is that Vanidades has so far, no ads that contain "perfume", which I appreciate; in fact, their ads are well placed and not as invasive as is the current trend in women's magazines.

From movie star chit-chat to some serious subjects, this magazine should appeal to women in a wide age range, and with diverse interests. It also has a "world view" that makes it interesting, and would be helpful for those studying Spanish, as it is well written and in an easy to read style

... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST SERVICE/CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
I WAS SUBSCRIBED FOR A YEAR WHICH ENDED LAST MONTH, I ONLY RECEIVED 2 ISSUES, CALLED MANY TIMES TO COMPLAIN AND NO FAVORABLE ANSWER. OTHER MAGAZINES I ORDERED ARRIVED WELL. I WILL SAY WORST SERVICE, WORST CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, WORST SERVICE, AMAZON SHOULDN'T HAVE AS A PRODUCT.

2-0 out of 5 stars Vocabulary builder, but not your father's Reader's Digest
A reluctant "thumbs up"(the other one is helping to hold my nose)...

Reader's Digest used to be a rather conservative offering, but now has undergone several recent transformations, resulting in something designed to compete with "Us" or "People", as evidenced by the now-standard kiss-up softball fluff piece to this or that Hollywood celebrity, nearly all airheaded pinko lefties. This from the once staunchly anti-Soviet/anti-communist magazine.

That being said, I've reluctantly continued my subscription for 10yrs., because it is a good vocabulary builder. NOTE: have plenty of dictionaries handy! Whoever translates the article may call it what it's called in Venezuela & not Colombia. The world "regazo"("lap"[i.e., a place to sit] in Eng.) is common in the magazine, but my (Venezuelan) master's degree tutor & her PhD (Mexican) gal pal had never heard of the word! (They say "piernas"[legs] which conjures up a humorous image to the native speaker of Eng.).

Whatever. Back issues are hard to find, sadly, because these'd be a treasure. Mexico's version of eBay, perhaps.

That the articles are different is prob'ly a matter of demographics(as applies to advertising)/audience appeal/simple editorial preferences. Yes, I too thought I'd simply place the Eng. & Span. editions side-by-side & have the translations spoon fed to me, but this isn't the case.

Also, not all editions in Spanish are available to US addresses! Forget it if you want the magazine that's printed/distributed in Spain!

2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Katty Estevez
I was also very disappointed to learn that the Spanish version of Reader's Digest does not cover the same articles as the English version. My wife' primary laguage is Spanish and I also was hoping to discuss the articles that we would read in the publication. Can anyone give us the reason for the decision by the company not to have mirror versions in English and Spanish?

3-0 out of 5 stars Selecciones - why different from Reader's Digest?
When I suscribed to Selecciones I was under the impression that it would cover the same articles as the English version of Reader's Digest. I think Reader's Digest creates a disservice to spanish readers by offering a product that does NOT produce the same well known, widely read product to English language readers. I was very disappointed that the magazines covered different topics --when trying to discuss articles from a Reader's Digest magazine with my mother, who reads only in Spanish, hence only suscribes to Selecciones. Why not offer the same well known product with the same articles that appear in Reader's Digest? Though selecciones is a good magazine, I don't see why the clear separation of topics from one magazine to another. It is misleading to suscribers who are looking to read the Reader's Digest widely distributed product, when they're actually buying an inferior product.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for building a vocabulary
This unpretentious little magazine would perhaps be good for an intermediate Spanish language student. With its wide assortment of topics, there's bound to be a few articles to hold ones interest.
The variety for the month of May '02 includes "El Pantanal Brasileño", about the wildlife in Brazil and which includes many photos, a piece on Sophia Loren, another on conserving ones memory as one ages with mental exercises that are supposed to help, and many more. The one that appealed to me was "La Magia Curativa de la Cocina Oriental" as I'm one of those "you are what you eat" believers.

It also has those "tidbits" like "La Risa, Remedio Infalible", and of course, the intimidating "Enriquezca su Vocabulario", which I find quite a challenge, and only occasionally have reached the lowest score of "Bueno" !

One has to remember that these articles are for the most part translations condensed from U.S. magazines, and don't have the cadence of something written originally in Spanish, but the translations are well done, and it's in that handy, easy to carry "fit in your pocket" (well, almost !) size. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MUY CALIENTE
THE ONLY DIFERENCE BETWEEN THE ENGLISH VERSION AND SPANISH, IS THE THE GIRLS ON THE SPANISH ISSUES ARE HOTTER THAN THE ONES IN ENGLISH, BUT THE ARTICLES ON THE ONE IN ENGLISH ARE MORE SASSY AND FUN, I HAVE A FEW CO-WORKERS THAT JUST LOVE THE HISPANIC WOMEN, AND I AGREE WITH THEM,SPECIALY IF YOU LOOK AT BARBARA KARI FROM PARAGUAY, SHE IS A HOTTIE,AND WHO COULD FORGET THE ISSUE WITH SOFIA VERGARA, SHE IS A BOMB.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the English Version
The only reason someone would prefer this version is because you have no idea of what is English. They have almost all the articles you can get in the english version, but about 3 or 4 months later. The translation loses a lot of the sence and spice you get in english. And it is more expensive too!..

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas on how to improve yourself
Many people will find this magazine shallow, but I don't really believe them. I am reading it non stop since the last semester, and I have to recognize it's well-written, it has great articles on health issues so guys can understand it; for example, there was a story on heart disease which was very compelling and informative. You will find exercises there if you want to pump up, I have been using them for a while and mixing them up as a routine I can follow and I'm pleased for the results; it's a nice first step if you're a beginner but then you'll have to take it a little forward. It has a simple, no-nonsense and humorous attitude which makes it even more enjoyable to read. I think it's good for your money's worth. just don't take the relationships articles way too seriously (by the way, they're NOT intended to be taken seriously) ... Read more

You know "Blush" magazine? Its fictional headquarters are the set of the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me. You read their headlines and article ideas, and you know they're based on this little piece of waste! What shocks me is that I know 13-year-old girls get their dose of sex and guys information from it. Very shallow, they try to be so sophisticated it ends up being naive! Stay away from it

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning
Increasingly you need to have two or more languages. If your kids are learning spanish, this is helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good for those who've studied some Spanish
If you would like to keep your reading and listening skills up but live in a situation where you do not have frequent chances to do so in real life, this Magazine should be very helpful for you. It covers a wide range of subject materials of all Latin countries, including Spain; the vocabulary improvement with these articles is significant. One word of Caution: I do not think that this magazine is for a brand-new person to Spanish. At least one year of formal Spanish in high school or college would be advisable. I had two years of high school Spanish and two years of University level Spanish and lived the first 30 years of my life in Texas; and yet, I still find this magazine challenging while at the same time very helpful. It also makes a great and unique gift. BE SURE TO BUY THE AUDIO CD ALONG WITH THE PRINTED MAGAZINE; that is more expensive but well worth it!
¡Beuna Suerte!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the CD edition!
I've been subscribing to this magazine for more than a year. It's really helped me with my reading. The issues are small and the articles are short. An article is usually from one to three pages in large type with glossaries in the margins.

Even though the articles are short, I will often concentrate on one article at a time, rereading it several times a day for a couple of days. When I can read the article straight through without consulting the glossary, and understand everything, I move on to the next.

Around April of last year (2004), the magazine began offering an optional audio CD. The CD contains each of the magazine articles read aloud. I think this is the best feature of the magazine. Now it helps me as much with my listening as it does with my reading.

Since I started getting the CD, I now listen to the article that I'm concentrating on over & over until I think I understand most of it. Only then will I read the article. I will read it until I understand it completely. Then I listen to it some more, until I'm comfortable with it.

The articles cover all sorts of topics from all around the Spanish speaking world: Geography, People, Environment, History, Culture. And there are regular features: recipes, crosswords, lessons.

If you're serious about learing Spanish and you're at a beginner-intermediate level (or maybe higher) you should try this magazine. The website (http://www.readspanish.com) has sample pages and audio online. I'm not sure if they sell samples or back issues, but they have a product called "Audio Guide to Places in Spain" that's fairly cheap. It's in a smaller format than the magazine, but it might help you decide if this sort of thing is right for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great magazine for learning to read Spanish
I've been trying, in a leisurely and sporadic sort of way, to learn Spanish, and I was looking for a magazine for Spanish-speaking children, figuring that would be suitable for my current reading level, but then I ran across this magazine, which is just what I needed. If you have at least a little bit of background in Spanish--the basic grammar and vocabulary you'd learn in a year or two of high school Spanish--this magazine is a great tool for expanding your vocabulary and practicing reading.

The magazine contains articles in Spanish, written by native Spanish speakers, about life in Spanish-speaking countries--history, culture, daily life, biographies, news, even recipes. Each article has a glossary next to it that translates well over half of the words and phrases in the article. You're expected to understand only really basic vocabulary and obvious cognates. For example, in the issue I'm looking at, these are some of the words that aren't translated: con, para, mi, esto, hay, cinco, nuevo, son, muchos, octubre, ahora, familia, radicalmente, internacional. And these are translated in the glossaries: aquellas, viven, respuestas, alrededor, mientras, quedaban, esperar, encuentro, desarollo, ayudar.

The magazine also includes Spanish crossword puzzles and brief lessons (in English) on Spanish grammar and usage. Each issue is relatively short--about 18 pages--but that's been more than enough for me each month.

(Incidentally, a great book for learning to read Spanish--just to read it, not to write or speak it--is "Spanish for Reading" by Franco and Sandberg, which is suitable even for complete beginners.) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good Spanish language magazine-3 1/2 stars.
This is quite a good Spanish language magazine that covers a variety of subject material. It will attract those who are looking for a little of everything health, beauty, relationship & fashion tips. There is plenty of coverage on the Latin"farandula". Meaning Latinos who are in the spotlight - music & television favorites. There are a few columns for example letters to the editor and people seeking advise on a more personal level . My favorite section is the tips on what books are popular and suggested literature. Overall it's not a bad magazine for easy reading and if you purchase it month to month you certainly have the option of buying it or not depending on what attracts you. I personally found the magazine a bit busy. There appears to be no clear structure and a well laid out magazine in my opinion is always nicer to read. The paper quality is excellent and the magazine is just the right size. It has the right amount of detail on a monthly basis. It's worthy if this is the type of information that you are looking for in a magazine. I much prefer the magazine over the TV show.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cristina, la reina de la tele
This woman's magazine, put out by talk show queen Cristina, will be appreciated by those who watch Spanish-language television, as it concentrates on the stars of the telenovelas, the news anchors, and the singers that appear on the music shows.
It also has some articles on Hollywood celebrities, and as an example, my latest issue has a piece on Esai Morales, and another on Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, and the actors he has used in his films, like Antonio Banderas.

Also included in this issue is a good measure of gossip, lots of bikini-clad starlets (Hispanic TV has a lot of visible skin), "Gloria Trevi, Inc.", about how Trevi's scandals have created a lucrative industry, "Las Botanas del Verano" for some yummy recipes, and one of the fashion features is "Piernas que Deslumbran", on how to take care of your legs so they will look attractive in those skimpy skirts.
"Playas Mexicanas" is a wonderful look at Mexico's most beautiful vacation spots, and a regular column is "Querida Cristina", where advice is given.

Cristina Saralegui was born in Havana, Cuba, came to the U.S. in 1960, and was raised in Miami, FL. Her charismatic personality, and terrific interviews have made her program the # 1 talk show in Latin America. The layout of this magazine is a bit of a jumble for my taste, but will appeal to the young and energetic; the paper quality good, and though the audience for this publication is fairly narrow, it covers a lot of ground. ...
