4-0 out of 5 stars the closest thing to free riding lessons
This is great if you are deeply engrossed in the world of dressage, but a bit tough to comprehend if you are just trying to get your feet wet. They have great articles writen by top riders, how-to and step-by-step riding articles with beautiful photos that clearly illustrate the topic. For the price, it's an indespensible dressage tool, especially if you don't have regular acess to a trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magazine for Dressage Riders...
I applaud the puplishers, authors and photographers who show their talent in this magazine. This is one of the best magazines I have read that is truly commited to the discipline of riding that it claimes to represent. The articals are well written and well presented. The lessons are all great for any rider at any level of training.

In replying to another persons comments, "...This magazine is not good for someone who wants to know about all around horse care and events..." No, this is NOT for learning about horse care or events. This is a magazine about the Dressage Discipline. NOT Horse Care. That is why this magazine is entitled "Dressage Today..." It deals entirely with "Dressage Today." This is why I read it faithfully cover to cover. If a person is looking for Horse Care, I hightly reccomend "EQUUS" or "HORSE & RIDER". I have learned, and still learn, many things about horse care from thoes two wonderful Magazines.

So, If you are looking for an excellent magazine to help you along the road of Dressage Rriding, I recommend this magazine. Not to mention the yearly issue they devote to the BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED Stallions, before the breeding season! OH MY GOODNESS! I love that issue!!

You will not regret one issue of this wonderful Magazine...

Good Riding!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way for amatures to connect
I always look forward to the arrival of my "Dressage Today" each month. As an amature dressage enthusiast I appreciate the information, both instructional and contacts it provides. A good way to help me stay connected with quality current information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Awsome!
I love this magazine. It delves deep into the meanings and techniques of dressage. This Magazine was especially helpful to me in correcting problems with my position and suppling my with information on starting a breeding farm. This is a must have for dressage riders who want to become better riders.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good for all around horsemanship
This magazine is not good for someone who wants to know about all around horse care and events. However, if you want the info on centered riding, good training technikes, riding cues, and dressage events, this is the magazine for you. If you want the whole horse deal, Equus is a great magazine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Base to Build
John Lyon's has taken what good horsetrainers have done for years and put into an easily read and digested format. His methods of horse management and training reflect the current trends in this field. The magazine is thin, but full of information. I personally like the fact the magazine comes pre-punched for insertion into a three-ring binder. This allows you to have your collection with you at the barn or at an event. Lyon's articles provide information for the novice to the expert. The writing style is crisp and concise. Overall I recommend this for all horseowners whether they are seeking to train their own horse or not. The management techniques and tips are essential to help keep and maintain horses of all levels and disciplines. This is not really a magazine for a non-horse owner. The tips and techniques need to be applied to be effective. A horse lover who does not own a horse may not fully appreciate or understand some of Lyon's nuances.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good investment for the horse owner
I really like John Lyon's training methods and I've read several of his books in his "Perfect Horse" series and "Lyons on Horses". I prefer the series of books rather than the publication just because you're basically getting the same information but in a more organized lesson form. I like the idea of the ad-free format and I'm willing to pay more for a skinny, add-free magazine, but Lyons tends to push his own training products and books quite aggressively, along with products from companies that he has endorsement deals with. He also likes to throw in biblical quotes.

Lyon's teaches a kind, safe, patient method of training that emphasizes working on your horse from the ground before tackling riding. It works with any horse and just about any discipline or riding. He doesn't give riding lessons, so don't think you'll be learning to ride, but if you take his lead, you'll be a better horseman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Horse Perfect Magazine
John Lyons' the Perfect Horse Magazine is a must have for horse owners. Riders of all abilities can benifit as well. It is a well written, easy to read, informative magazine. For myself, it is one I read cover to cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BASKETBALL MAGAZINE OUT!!!!
To any basketball fan reading this--you need to subscribe to this magazine or atleast buy it monthly, if not you are missing out on the best coverage of professional basketball. About 80% of this magazine is NBA, about 20% high school, college, and womens basketball. The writers in this magazine do a great job on giving you stories on and off the court of the athletes.

Sports Illustrated doesnt even come close to what this magazine has and The Inside Stuff is more on a pre-teen level.

Every issue of Slam has an article with an Old School Player which they interview, the cover story usually interviews the athlete, there are about 2 to 3 more full sized articles along with the "Punks" section which features high school b-ball players or schools. Plus much more.

Every once in a while they will release a special issue that isn't included in the subscription.... They have had a Streetball Issue, (another is on the way), they have released 3 KICKS ISSUES (all about shoes), They have also released the 50 GREATEST DUNKERS ISSUE, along with the 50 Greatest Players Issue.
Oh, the 10th anniversary issue just came out a couple of months ago and a couple of years ago they released the 50th issue in which they had 3 special covers of Jordan dunking from the freethrow line. (These are now framed and on my wall!!!)

Slam covers every aspect of the sport of basketball, if you are lookin for a good basketball magazine to subscribe to this is the one. The pictures in here are also the best, no one can compete with this mag!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best basketball magazine available!
For fans of NBA basketball, or college basketball for that matter, SLAM is the best magazine for you.

SLAM is a magazine that focuses on giving fans some background knowledge about the players on the court, and how they got there. Importantly, it does not solely focus on the mainstream guys. In fact, frequently there are articles about guys who never made it to the big stage, but were legends in their area for that brief moment. That is what makes SLAM different.
There are sections on high school and college basketball, foreign leagues, and past legends. The pieces on 'old school' players are often the best, telling the stories of the greats from yesteryear and showing that the game was invented long before Michael Jordan ever made a Nike commercial.

Clever basketball related jokes are woven in throughout the magazine, and make for humorous reading.
Add to all this the great action photos, and of course the tear-out posters of stars doing what they do best. Plus, a section devoted entirely to the latest shoes and clothing available to help you look good when you hit the streets.

SLAM is essential if you want to call yourself a real fan, and to keep up with the game it is well worth subscribing to.

2-0 out of 5 stars its a pretty good magazine
ok so there are to much advertisments but the pictures rock some of the best ive seen.and the articles rock as well.

GO JAZZ

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything hoops
I read a lot of the different sports magazines, especially anything about basketall, and this is basically the only one that really tells me what I want to know about the game and keeps me entertained at the same time. Slam has a lot of features on different players, and not just NBA, but college and even high school players. Slam is the first place that I read about LeBron James and most of the other high school players who came into the NBA. If you love basketball, you'd definite love Slam.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Magazine Tries to be Cool...
and fails. As an avid basketball fan who watches every game possible, checks nba.com and espn.com every morning, this magazine isn't worth your money. The magazine uses a lot of unnessacary slang and swear words, which looks and sounds unprofessional. It has a few good story ideas and sections, but the finished stories aren't very interesting or well written. As another rewiewer said, there is a lot of adevertising. I bought the August edition of this magazine to check it out before subscribing, and I'm glad I did because I do not reccoment anyone ot subscribe to this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference on all aspects of horse care.
I have been a subscriber to Equus for years, and have found it to be a consistently reliable source of information on all issues related to horse care. The articles are up to date and comprehensive, yet are easily accessible to equestrians of all experience levels. Of further use is the glossary included at the back of the magazine, which provides definitions of any complex medical or technical terms. Besides having great features on current equine trends, concerns, medical developments, riding and training methods and more, each issue also includes the following regular columns:

"Letters" - Many of the letters sent in by readers are published here, usually pertaining to articles in past issues. It is nice to see the reactions of other readers, whether positive or negative, and to read anything they may have to add on a subject.

"Medical Front" - This section contains several interesting, short articles covering the latest developments in the equine medical field, be they advances in technology, new discoveries related to certain ailments, or warnings about new diseases or epidemics. It is a great way to stay on top of current events.

"Hands On" - Here you will find brief write-ups that include information and practical advice on everyday horse care issues, such as pasture maintenance, hoof care, foaling concerns, safety and convenience tips, etc.

"Tack & Gear" - This short sections profiles the best equine products and equipment, with each issue usually having a certain theme, such as boots, reins, gloves, and so forth. The products are briefly describes and information on price and distributors are included.

"Roundup" - Much like Medical Front in format, this section shares news items relating to all aspects of the horse world, from legal developments, controversial issues, important accomlishments of horses or horsepeople, new programs or organizations, and more.

"True Tale" - Frequently, the magazine will include an amazing or heartwarming true horse story submitted by a reader. These can include things like horses rescuing their beloved humans from danger, showing exceptional intelligence, or otherwise distinguishing themselves as very special individuals.

"Case Report" - I find this to be one of the most interesting features. It profiles a true medical stories submitted by readers, included mysterious ailments, miraculous recoveries of seemingly hopeless injuries, etc.

"Consultants" - Here readers can submit questions they have pertaining to horse care, riding, stable management, or whatever else they may need advice on. Qualified professionals provide concise yet thorough answers, and refer the reader to other sources of information on the topic if necessary.

"Stock & Trade" - Each issue profiles two or three specific horse care products here, with brief descriptions, comments from the manufacturer, pricing, and purchasing information. Products covered include anything from trailer equipment to training implements to grooming products and more.

"Back Page" - At the very end of each magazine is an editorial. These can cover just about any topic, and range from simply sharing an interesting horse story, to voicing an opinion on a current equine issue. They are short, one-page pieces, and are often quite interesting.

On the whole, a great magazine! Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best
Truly the magazine that puts the horse, not the rider's and his/her ego, first. Widely varied subjects and well-written articles, newest medical info, personal experience articles. Even the editorials are good !! Illustrations are clear, precise and plentiful. If I could ever have written a horse magazine that put and kept the horse first, I like to think this would have been it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to horse care
This is such an essential guide to horse care for amateurs, backyard horsekeepers and professionals alike. I've been subscribing to Equus for about 9 years now, and I've never thrown away an issue. They cover all the major and minor issues that concern horsemen, from encroaching land developments, the latest health concerns and solutions, and practical how-to and safely guides. They deal a lot with health and soundness issues and keep the reader informed on the latest medical updates. They have a great team of writers and every issue is packed with invaluable information and stories from fellow horsemen. It covers all disciplines and breeds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Equus is one of the best
I have subscribed to many general magazines on horses over the years. It is hard to beat Equus for comprehensiveness, accuracy, and readability. I am not a professional horseman, veterinarian, or trainer. But I am a knowledgeable amateur. I find Equus articles up-to-date and useful. The editors seem to keep up with trends and issues in most aspects of the horse industry. I find their articles on medical/scientific subjects the most helpful. These articles are written in comprehensible English without being "dumbed down". I also find their annual surveys of horse industry trends enlightening. Equus includes an annual index to their articles but, if I could talk to the editors, I would urge them to consider including Equus in one or more of the national periodical database indexes available in most libraries. That would make their articles available to a wider public of novice horse owners and horse lovers who can't afford a horse. Many of these people may have no knowledge of horse industry periodicals. Equus articles have such educational value, I think they should be available to academic audiences as well. There is a huge untapped audience of "wannabe" horsemen who would love to learn about Equus.

5-0 out of 5 stars EQUUS
This is the perfect magazine for horse lovers of any or all disciplines and horse breeds. Instead of centering on one discipline, EQUUS touches on all areas of horse ownership. Informative horse-care articles. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars writing counts!
Fly Rod and Reel has always struck me as the "literary" general interest fly fishing magazine. The writing tends to be of a higher quality than other magazines and the regular features by John Gierach are often worth the price of admission themselves. While many of the national fly fishing magazines tend to be rather predictable, FR&R will often shake things up. Their product reviews are more than just commercials and the destination pieces attempt to bring out a sense of place, rather than the how, where and when of some genre writing. If I had to offer one criticism, it would be that FR&R tends to concentrate on fishing east of the continental divide. As a west coaster, this can be a bit frustrating, but still, a good read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The new BEST surf magazine.
The reviews blowing off SURFING on this page obviously haven't taken a look at the magazine recently. First of all, Surfer mag is in the dumps these days - with the stangent editorial of Sam "the bore" George soliliquizing away on his own little pulpit while the editorial team traipse off on their own little agendas is truly tiresome. SURFING on the other hand, has been on a sharp up-swing from their former, grom-oriented self. Clean, simple, and pure the way a surf magazine should be, you can tell the mag is being put together by a unified editorial team. Each issue is cohesive, focused and beautiful. Rounded lines (to imitate the shape of waves) andhuge, epic surf pics displaying the true cutting edge of high performance surfing. I've been a subscriber of both surf mags (which by the way, are owned by the same parent company and thus print the exact some amount of advertising), and I definitely see SURFING on the way up and Surfer, on the way out. Check it out. The difference is clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was there when it started.
The Western Horseman is THE horse magazine. It started in 1936. My mother wrote an article that was published in Volume 2, Number 4 in 1937. It was about the cowboys in New Mexico along the Pecos River. The ranch was the Turkey Track. I would like to have the issue, but over the years it disappeared. We, she and I raised horses for many years in Kansas and Oklahoma until a back injury slowed me down.
Over the years the magazine has kept up with the changing styles and breeds of western horses. More power to them!!
Keep me in mind if you have the issue I mentioned, and would like to sell it to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic horseman's magazine!!
I can't remember when I started reading Western Horseman. My mother had a subscription back in the fifties, even though we had Arabians and half-Arabians. As the title suggests, Western Horseman is a magazine for western horsemen. Back in the fifties you wouldn't see an English saddle in the magazine. However, I read it cover-to-cover then and I read it that way now. Even during the time I couldn't own a horse, I read Western Horseman. Nowdays, they occasionally include a horse with an English or, more likely, an Australian or Endurance saddle among all those western stock seat saddles. But that is fine. Western Horseman is what it claims to be, the premier magazine for western horsemen even if they don't live in the west or ride stock seat. The magazine is full of information about western stock horse disciplines. Their articles are basic and practical. Their writers are people I have never met but whose names are as familiar to me as my next-door-neighbor. They write about horse people. I have learned about rodeo clowns, bullriders, cowboy poets and western artists as well as horses. They write about the western way of life and those people who try to preserve it even as it changes around them. So, if you buy Western Horseman, and I hope you do, don't expect to read only about horses, although you will find plenty about horses. Expect to read about western horsemen in all their variations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best horse magazine
Western Horseman is the premier horse magazine, with articles on all aspects of horses and horsemanship from trailers and trailering to horse packing, shoeing, disease and parasite control as well as special focus pieces on the different breeds of horse. If you like the outdoors and horses, you will love this magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST All Around Horse Magazine Period
The BEST All Around Horse Magazine Period - Also The BEST current price. If a horse owner can only have one equine related magazine this is is the ONE I would recommend. I believe they have been in business since 1938 and know what they are talking about, in an entertaining non-technical manner. 5-0 out of 5 stars very Compact
alot of solid details, stats&overall information past&Present that truly adds up. the Magazine is cool in that it's real compact&that is the one thing that I always dug about all the Digest's they are magazines you can read&eat with at the same time. i always enjoyed Q&A's with certain players.a really cool Read for the Football Fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great football magazine that "digests" quickly
After spending some time sorting through the plethora of sports periodicals in an effort to find one that gives good coverage of the NFL scene but didn't bore me with too many details and stats, I ended up favoring Football Digest® over the rest. I find about 80% of the articles, opinion pieces, and interviews within this mag at least modestly interesting, and highly readable. The regular features of FbD include the big interview of the month with a top pro star, a column that focuses on the college ball scene, and a former pro player's memories of "the game I'll never forget"

Football Digest is a fairly quick yet informative read for me; I can usually blow through an entire issue in about an hour and a half. 'Course, with it being digest sized and only 90 pages long-- 75 pages if you skip the stats section in the back-- it shouldn't take too long to go cover to cover, anyway. Fortunately, some of the articles are worth a second read-- which is a rare thing for me, as I'm usually pretty much done with a periodical as soon as I've read the pieces of interest once. The only initial turn-off I encountered with FbD was the cover price. If it weren't for the highly discounted subscription rate, I'd never plunk down six bucks a month for a small 90-page magazine that doesn't even have color photos (save for the cover); it just ain't worth it. So needless to say, if you're interested in giving Football Digest a quick try-out before ya buy, snap it up at your local newsstand. If ya like what'cha see, go for the subscription.

5-0 out of 5 stars Undeniably A Great Magazine For The Football Fan!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Good News - But Lacks other information
Golf World is a very good source for your every day/weekly golf news, industry news, tournament news and player news. However, it lacks everything else. There aren't any articles or special features on golf travel, clubs and other lifestyle related items that are also essential to the avid golfer. I actually enjoy Golfweek a little more, as they occasionally write about places to play and have a great "club test" piece, where they take a slew of different amateur players, with different handicaps and review new clubs by having different scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your best source for the sport of golf
Okay, first things first: if you want a magazine that is going to show you how to 'Break 90 Consistently!' or 'Hit It Lke Tiger!!' etc...well, GolfWorld is *not* going to be your cup of tea.

But if you're like me and you want the inside scoop on what happened on the various tours (PGA, Champions, LPGA, Nationwide, European, Japanese, NCAA and much, much more) over the previous week, then GolfWorld *is exactly* what you're looking for. It's the bible. Period.

For example, there's a great section each week that tells you what the winners of the three major tours were carrying in their bags. Then they drill down one level further and examine one of the components in greater detail. For example, only GolfWorld told me that PGA winner Rich Beem uses graphite shafts on his irons. In fact, Beemer was one of only three (regular) tour golfers in 2002 that used them. The article when on to explain the bias against graphite irons at the pro level and Beem's reasoning against that bias. If you appreciate detail and nunace like that (and I do), then GolfWorld will fascinate you week in and week out.

GolfWorld also keeps you informed about the greater issues that consistently swirl about the game. No one has reported the R&A v. USGA v. Callaway (and others) COR battle better, and they've not shied away from commenting about the current Masters controversy either.

This week's edition (December 13, 2002) is a prime example of what makes GolfWorld such a great read. Q-School just concluded, and in most newspapers it got relegated to the agate type...even though this tournament - more than any other week of the year - can make or break men's careers (lives, maybe). By contrast, GolfWorld dedicates its *entire issue* - 52 pages! - to what it calls "golf's hardest week." Exactly what the event deserves.

This magazine is worth every penny. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Subscribe
Do not subscribe to this magazine. I subscribed in December and the money was taken out of my bank account on 18 December. Since then I have received no magazines and my money has not been returned despite many e-mails. They seem to simply steal money and there does not seem to be anything that I can do about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The premier martial arts magazine that sets the standard
Not so many years ago when I was but a teenager, the martial arts provided a much-needed outlet to channel my energy into something constructive. When I wasn't going to class and learning first hand the physical aspects of the art (from the ages of 17-21), I was scouring the newsstands in an effort to find out all I could about all things martial. It is here that I ran across the best magazine in the business, Black Belt.

It is also here that I looked to and found inspiration from those who had already walked down the path that I now found myself traveling. The magazine was insightful, and did much to quench the thirst that grew within me. Like any great periodical, the pictures where great, and the stories well written. Best of all, they didn't dedicate every page in every issue to one popular style or proponent. Like any source worthy of the material it covers, they opted for variety. Not belonging to a "mainstream" art myself, I found it a nice change that I welcomed.

As you can probably expect, I made the choice to subscribe. For about five years, I was a loyal reader. While time no longer permits me to go to class (these things happen in adulthood), I still pick up a copy from time to time just to see what is going on in the martial arts community. What I see still brings a smile to my face, as the memories come pouring back to me. The martial arts helped shape who I am today, and Black Belt magazine was a valuable part of that journey. Maybe one day when things slow down a little and I have too much spare time on my hands, I'll resume my journey. When this happens, it will be safe to assume which martial arts magazine will be filling my mailbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Variety of Martial Arts in one Magazine
I have been reading this magazine for 18 years (and I am only 28). This magazine is a must for people interested in martial arts, not necessarily in one particular art, but as martial arts as a whole. The articles are thought out and interesting. The letters to the editor and various monthly columns are insightful and interesting. As a martial artist you know that not one martial art is more effective than the next, this magazine proves that, wherein it diversifies and points out the strengths and weaknesses of some of the arts. This is a great magazine and has only gotten better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine
I love this magazine not only for the Camper and RV articles but the great assortment of information on destinations, first aid, buyer's guides etc. And the photography is first rate.

2-0 out of 5 stars 'Camping Life' Might Better be called 'Camper Life'
Although 'Camping Life' does contain a nice article or two each issue, the thrust of the magazine seems more to be a showcase of nice big campers/RV's rather than the experience of camping and related camping activities. I subscribed sight unseen from the boy next door who was selling subscriptions for school. I will definitely let this subscription lapse. There's just not enough love of camping and the outdoors in the magazine. However, if your camping interests run more to great big RV's and all the related gear, you might find some value here that I did not.

3-0 out of 5 stars O.k. , but just O.k.!
We recently purchased a popup trailer and subscribed to PopUp Times magazine. I was looking for another magazine also that was devoted to camping and family. Came across Camping Life. I bought an issue to see how we liked it before subscribing. I'm glad I did! While the magazine is O.k., it's not exactly what I was looking for in a family oriented camping magazine. Seems to me the articles were geared toward upper average income families that just "have to have" the name brand most popular at the time. I felt like I was reading a magazine devoted to "keeping up with the Jones'"! Also, I was a little dissappointed that the magazine only comes out every other month. With as much ads in this magazine, it does not take long to read it. ... Read more
