I¿d rather be sailing than reading about it, but....
When the storm blows, or I am languishing in the doldrums, I pull out one of the three "boating" magazines I get: Sail, Sailing and Soundings. "Sail's" top quality, above, the other two, is in the areas of technical advice. It always has a solid information on cruising tips and weather mixed with a smattering of great sea stories.

The destinations that are profiled, for potential cruising destinations, always becharm me with the thought that one day I too will anchor in Italy, or Maine, or Western Canada, or..... Really, who among us wouldn't be tempted with the thought of a layover at Bora Bora .

Some of the reviews, especially in electronics, have been disappointing. The reviews give an overall comprehension of what is offered in the market today, but, sadly, make no recommendations. For example, the article that was to "review" seven color plotters (April 2003) ended the article with no recommendations, and then gave an insubstantial kiss off by saying, "it is disconcerting to contemplate how many brands and models there are to choose from". In other words, "you're on your own".

Regarding evaluations of new and used boats, I find "Sailing" to be more comprehensive and helpful.

Don't get me wrong "Sail" is still a worthwhile read and has excellent advise for any 'salt' or 'beginner'. Recommended. 3.5 stars

I love those boats.
Being stuck in Minnesota with our six months winters, Sail magazine is a real pleasure. I knew nothing about sailing before subscribing and now I seem to know lots of things. I like this mag. and the stories of exotic places which they sail to. I think if you do a lot of coastal/blue water sailing, this magazine would be a smart bet.

ON 2ND SUBSCRIPTION
I have just renewed my subscription to Sail magazine for a 2nd year. I believe its a great magazine for informative and entertaining articles. The photography is superb and editing is well done. My only criticism would be that I would really like to see reviews and updates for cheaper more affordable boats. Cruising Dreams
This is a great magazine. It contrates on the crusing community. If you
like to dream about "going cursing" this is the mag for you.

I also read Sail and Good Old Boat.

Subscription problems
I had the chance to read some issue when I was in California and I found it quite interesting.
When I moved back to my country I experienced hard times on subscribing to it. The customer service is poor. The web system for international subscription wasn't working properly so I wasn't able to proceed.
After several contacts via phone and email, I sent my credit card number via fax at the number they provided. The magazine never arrived.

A Magaizine Worth its Ballast.
I get three "boating" magazines: Sailing, Sail and Soundings (a general boating magazine - highly recommended). Each one has a special place on my coffee table.

The strength of this magazine is, first and foremost, the sections titled: 'Perry on Design' and the 'Used Boat Notebook' (and its accompanying side bar - 'Value Guide'). 'Perry on Design' covers briefly the designs of the new offering hitting the market. 'Used Boat Notebook' is the "Car & Driver" review for used boats: much more thorough than 'Perry'. This outstanding section covers: Impressions, Construction, What to Look for, On Deck, Down Below, Engine, Under Way and a succinct conclusion that raps it up This section alone is the main reason I get this magazine. Other reasons are the magazine's beautiful color photos and a section called 'Boat Doctor', information on technique and safety.

If you are a sailor, serious or a wannabe, you can't go wrong with "Sailing". Strongly recommended.

Sailing World
I subscribed to Sailing World for two years. After 6 months I noticed that I only had 6 months left. After 5 calls where I was told I did have another year coming, now the tell me that a new owner has purchased the magazine and they owe me nothing.

I subscribed for 2 years and after 6 months I noticed that they only showed me having 6 months left. I have now spoken to them 5 times and spent more than an hour on the phone and they just told me they cant help me because they have been sold and the new owner dosn't owe me anything.

Top quality sailing magazine!
Sailing World is a beautiful, well-written magazine! It comes with gorgeous pictures and coverage of international, college and local races and regattas, as well as contains many technique articles complete with pictures and diagrams to reinforce or introduce solid techniques to a beginning or even experienced sailor. When I can't get out to sail, I turn to Sailing World to bring the world of sailing to me! It always has excellent coverage of America's Cup as well as other local regattas in California, where I live. It is timely and the information is always very current and holds the latest news in tech issues, new products on the market and current standings. Excellent coverage and exclusive articles that I haven't seen anywhere else. This publication helps you concentrate on being the best sailor that you can, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro. I recently took up sailing a few years ago and this has been like my sailing bible!

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO SAILING!...
If you only have time or space for one sailing magazine, this would be it! From the professional to the enthusiastic beginner, Sailing World is a must for the sailing afficianado. Where else can you find a balanced, well-written magazine that not only covers collegiate sailing, new products, America's Cup, international sailing, new boats, expert techniques, and intelligent editorials. I have found that other sailing publications try to be "too much" and they lose their focus in either large and countless advertisements to pay for their large format, or juxtapose a beginner's article against a highly technical article for experts, leaving the reader confused. Excellent Information Source
This is a great magazine, filled with information that I refer to again and again. Want to know the towing capacity of various trucks, or the towing rules of various states (max beam width, speed etc), or safe trailering rules (loads, tires, hitches etc)? It is all in this publication. The magazine is for those of us with smaller boats and not the mega buck mega crusiers so often reviewed by other publications. I doubt that (...) those who own 60 foot boats even read the publications that print the reviews. Why should they? They can hire naval architects to help them choose. But for me, the owner of a smaller boat, Trailer Boats magazine is an excellent information source filled with practical advice. Buy it. ... Read more
