5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly great
this magazine really gives you good info on piloting today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magazine for Real and Desktop Pilots
Flying a plane is one of my frustrations, and Flight Simulator is as close as I can get to real flying. However, this magazine puts me in touch with what goes on out there, and it makes me feel like one of the lucky few who can actually own/fly a plane. I've been reading Plane and Pilot since the mid 90s and I still anticipate the arrival of each new issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Standard for Aviation Journalism
What can I say? This magazine is the gold standard for popular aviation journalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold standard for General Aviation
Flying magazine sets a gold standard for general aviation magazines. It is not perfect -- the maybe cozy relationship with advertisers, it's hard to do one thing perfectly when you cover such a large subject, airline pilots detect a bias against big iron, sometimes it is a little too glossy -- but it covers the whole world of piston and personal airplane flying.

In the past, Len Morgan and Richard Bach and Ernie Gann and many others wrote for Flying. Right now, for my money, the best writers are Lane Wallace and Peter Garrison. With Flying, you get them every month. For private pilots, the only magazine that directly compares is the excellent AOPA Pilot, but you will get that magazine if you join AOPA. The best way to get Flying is to subscribe, as it's a huge savings over buying it retail. If you are not sure it's for you, go buy one at the supermarket or bookstore and then come back and subscribe for a year.

4-0 out of 5 stars the standard general aviation publication
Flying is the major magazine for the general aviation community. It features a number of regular writers and columnists who are renowned in aviation circles (possibly because of their role with Flying). Flying's safety features and reviews of the latest technology are unbeatable, and they do make at least a token effort to try to cover the gamut of general aviation. Nonetheless, the magazine does seem most focused on the corporate aviation world of jets and heavy multi-engine props, probably because that is where the big ad dollars are (note that they practically give away the magazine, and in fact it is free on airline shuttle flights nationwide). Private Pilot or Plane & Pilot might be good choices for most people interested in true general aviation.

5-0 out of 5 stars AirlineBiz.Com Magazine Review
Great magazine for private and professional pilots.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST general aviation magazine!
This is one of the best aviation magazines, it has great photography, well written articles and relevant information to the airmen, both beginner and professional.

Len Morgan's articles were among my favorites, but he does not write for flying any more.

Being a suscriber for more than twenty years, and have enjoyed every single issue. Once you subscribe, make sure you keep them, it's a joy to re-read some of the old ones.

It is mostly focused on "General Aviation", so it's not the place to look for commercial / airliners.

If you love aviation, like to fly or are just a fan of airplanes, you will love Flying Magazine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kit Planes
As a former flight-instructor & pilot, I love this magazine, as it brings back the "easy" days of flying!

It covers a broad range of flying issues -from flying to building to selecting models- and leaves one with enough information to either go with, or know where to get it from.

For anyone who does not yet fly but is bitten by the bug, or the person wanting to return to the non-pressured world of flight, this is the perfect introduction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Mags I've Read
One of the few magazines I will read cover to cover. Even those articles about civilian aircraft (I am a military aircraft enthusiast/author) I read with great interest. Many articles are about events/machines/people that I've never heard of but are fascinating to learn about. My only criticism is that it is not a monthly publication. It would be a great day indeed if the publishers decided to make it so. Either way, it is worth the money for a subscription.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong balance of civil & military aviation, but infrequent
I ordered this magainze, and although it covers one of my favorite subjects I did find that I was not as pleased as I had hoped. This magazine does not come monthly, and so you find yourself wondering if your issue is lost or if your subscription is messed up. Also, it has an awful lot of material that is used to cover civil aviation, but since I am not as interested in civil as I am military aviation, I was not able to appreciate as much of the magazine as I had hoped. overall, it is fairly balanced, and given that the civil world is much less writen about, that is to the magazine's credit, but I wish I had ordered something else instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars great stuff!
I take several different magazines, of different types. This is the one that I invariably read cover to cover, every single issue. OK, so you have to be _interested_ in the specialized subject matter, first. But if you do have any interest at all in Aviation History, this magazine presents a seldom-failing insight into lost, little-known, and obscure aspects of the entire century of aviation. The writing is literate and interesting, and they come up with some marvellous, mostly unpublished, pictures. I would recommend at least a trial subscription - my bet is that you'll like it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I have been a subscriber for over a year now, and this relatively new periodical is one of the best aviation publications I have ever read. There are some very big aviaiton writers behind this magazine, and it shows. Each issue covers many facets of the world of flight, with a definite bend towrds military avaition. There are often wonderfull and riveting first-hand accounts from WWI, WWII, Veitnam, Korea, the Gulf War, and the war in the Balkans. Each issue features a "gallery" which is simply a photo essay profile of a given aircraft, usually current front line military hardware, that is always stunning. Some of the articles that I have really enjoyed include a comprehensive history of the military leather flying jacket, a first hand account by a Black Widow pilot in WWII who had to shoot down a B-29 after the crew bailed out and the autopliot flew on, and a great first-hand account by an A-10 pilot about a mission in Kosovo. If you love flying, civil or military, warbirds or jet fighters, or even "aerial oddities" you will love this magazine! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you fly IFR, you should be reading this
This monthly magazine has many real world tips and articles on flying IFR safely written by people who fly and know the systems, procedures and methods. I have been a sbiscriber for years and as long as I'm flying, I'll keep reading IFR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real world with a dry wit
This magazine is ford those who have (or are close to getting ) their instrument rating. It features very practical discussions about how to operate in the system. It is easy to find books that explain the rules or AIM but this goes behind the scenes to explain how controllers look at situations and how they can (and sometimes can not) help. The editor is Paul Berge an ex controller and CFII who has a dry wit and is fairly quick to be critical or complimentary to ATC and the FAA as appropriate. He does a great job of explaining how "the other side" thinks and how to get the most out of the system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, useful tips for the instrument-rated pilot
IFR is one of several Belvoir aviation publications (Aviation Consumer, IFR pilot, light plane maintenance...) and retains their fine blend of humor and practicality. The assumption is the reader either has an IFR rating or is well-on her way.

Each issue has a general theme, often related to the season. For example, a recent issue explored zero-zero (no visibility, ceiling) takeoffs, as would be observed if a field were socked in with a 50' thick layer at ground-level. It's perfectly legal for part 91 (general aviation) flying, but often neglected as an option. Included in the article are legal considerations and ways of mitigating risk.

The monthly columns are also fun. Two of my favorites:
IFR quiz -- related to the primary topic of that issue, the quiz involves a combination of interpreting ATC regulations, navigation, chart symbiology and the realities of IFR flying. These are invaluable because you learn about the *intent* behind the presentation.

On the Air -- the aviator's equivalent of bloopers. ... Read more
