Once the best...seems to be going downhill
I consider myself one of the original subscribers to BA (I've been a subscriber for around 15 years). Like the other reviewer stated, it really is one of the best, if not the best, baseball magazines you can find. It offers great columnists, nearly unmatched in-depth coverage of prospects and the minor leagues, college, and high school baseball and often includes informative, entertaining feature articles.

That being said, during the past year or so, there's been a noticeable decline in quality of the editing/proof-reading of the magazine. There are often spelling and grammar mistakes now that would never have made it to press in the past. More disturbingly, there's been an incredible increase in the amount of advertisements - and they're placed all over the magazine now instead of towards the back of each issue. This normally wouldn't bother me so much, but the price of the subscription has continued to rise (by about thirty dollars over the past two years). More ads yet higher priced? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

In any event, this magazine is still the premier baseball magazine on the newsstands. I haven't decided if I'm going to re-new my subscription this coming year, though. We'll see if the quality declines any further. I'd recommend sampling a copy at your local newsstand/bookstore (if they carry it) to see if you're willing to pay such a high price for a bi-weekly magazine.

The baseball benchmark
I didn't refer to Baseball America as such. It was Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty who said it. And who am I to contradict? The best columnists in the game, from Peter Gammons, Tracy Ringolsby and Jayson Stark, to detailed information in ALL of baseball, from the Major Leagues to Japan, stats, scores, and the best and most extensive resource on prospect information, there's not a single serious fan in all of baseball who deserves such a title if is not a Baseball America subscriber. You got to read it if you want to know the stars of tomorrow (being tomorrow 6 years or 2 months). Top 10 prospects from every team till its massive Top 100 list, Baseball America covers it all. Looks great on the coffee table too!
First off, I have to admit - Alpinist is my new favorite magazine. That says a lot, considering I subscribe to an average of 10 or 12 magazines AND I work for an advertising firm (read: lots and lots of other monthly reads for free!).

It marries beautiful pictures and style with great writing about climbing - if National Geographic magazine mixed genes with Climbing and Wallpaper, Alpinist would probably be the final product...

Inside its glossy pages, you'll find an array of:
- Amazing writing - about adventures taken; about far away places; about hallucinations encountered in the wilderness; about NOT climbing, etc...
- Gorgeous, stunning, beautiful photos
- Information you never knew you needed to know ('Annapurna III?? I didn't even know there was an Annapurna Jr!')
- The occasional poem and/or New Yorker-esque cartoon.

And they do it all with elegance and enough humor that you want to keep on reading! Case in point: a reader accuses Alpinist of inserting "left wing, liberal political views" into their magazine and asserts that "GWB... loves you because you are an American." The Editors note aftewards that, "We assume that...'GWB' means Great White Brother."

That being said, you probably don't want to cancel your subscription to Climbing or Rock & Ice. Alpinist is only published quarterly, and I can't quite imagine them putting out an annual equipment guide anytime soon. The price tag is also heftier than I like paying... But all in all, I think it is a fabulous publication and worth every penny. And it makes an awesome gift!

GQ for Paintball
This is more like GQ for paintball - glitz, slick, business. Although I like GQ for what it is, the thought of GQ for paintball is a little nauseating. If you desire NASCAR news this is the paper for you
What it lacks in polish to the competing papers Speedway Scene makes up for in news. Besides being unique with its New England race coverage it's the coverage of NASCAR's top-two series that'll have you looking for the next issue. The writers don't appear to be afraid of looking under stones ---- and often find items that the others don't wont or cant find. I also suspect that this is the paper that WCS uses to develop their stories as this paper tends to run a week or two ahead of them. ... Read more
