5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Sunsets
I have been a subscriber of Sunset magazine for 25 years. my first subscription was received in Texas and at that time our area was not included so was not impressed, but dreamed of being able to travel to the places in wonderful articles about California. Then I moved to Southern California and there I was very much interested in the magazine diffrently. There are always interesting recipies, gardening articles, places to go, and beautiful pictures. On a cold winter night when there is much rain looking at the beautiful pictures changes sadness into gladness. I give subscriptions as gifts to my adult children and they very much enjoy the articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome magazine in every respect
This magazine has it all! Excellent travel information, great decorating and gardening ideas, and wonderful recipes. It is extremely well organized, and the advertisement layout keeps the articles in the forefront.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for gardener's in the west
The rest of the country be...well, anyway, the problem with most gardening books and magazines is they seem to be speaking to people who live in the tundra for 1/2 the year. Those whom God has blessed by ordaining us to live in the wonderful west do not have that problem. So it becomes tedious each year to read about how to "winter" your garden when you are still weeding and caring for it and would probably fined for stopping. This magazine is the answer to that annoyance.

Aside from gardening information they also have ideas for decorating and camping and other family fun things. The only annoyance in this magazine can be found in their recipe section. It is nothing if not gourmet. To be perfectly honest, in CA I don't have time to be a gourmet cook. The weather is too nice to be stuck inside doing all that work. But, I do use their recipes once/month to have our "formal" meal. And they are quite delicious.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tries To Be Too Much For Too Many
The Sunset Western Garden Book is the definitive reference for anyone gardening in the west, but if you're expecting Sunset Magazine to be the definitive periodical for gardening in the west, you'll be disappointed.

Each issue includes sections on gardening, travel, foods, home, and even books. After you subtract the ads, gardening content is down in the 10% range. And within that small section, the magazine tries to have something relevant for all western areas, from Alaska to Arizona to Idaho to Oregon, and everyplace in between. When they omit an area, the following month you'll see a letter to the editor complaining about it.

The other sections have similar issues. The travel section has to have destinations in every region. The food section has to have regional cuisine from every region. The home section even has to feature homes in every region.

Living alone, I don't cook much, let alone prepare fancy dishes. My biggest decorating issue is keeping the clutter down. The only travel I do is the commute to work. And I'd rather read books than read about books. I also don't care much about gardens in climates vastly different than my own, so I have no interest in the obligatory tropical plants covers. That leaves only a handful of pages that interest me.

If you're a well-rounded person, with interests in more areas than just gardening, you may well find Sunset an interesting magazine. The articles are all well written. The whole magazine is the highest level of quality. They do a great job of writing about everything they write about. It's just that their scope is just far too wide to be a comprehensive guide to living in such a diverse area as the west.

If you like Better Homes and Gardens, and you live in the west, you'll love Sunset Magazine. If you're looking for an extension of their definitive books on gardening in the west, you'll be disappointed by how little relevant content you'll find each month.

One other thing to mention: Sunset Magazine has made most of their website available only to subscribers, unless you're on AOL. So if you want to get to any of their excellent online content, you might want to subscribe even if there only is enough content in the print magazine to hold your attention for the walk from the mailbox to the door.

Overall, it's a great magazine that simply spreads itself too thin by trying to cover too much for too many different people. You may even find you can finish the parts that interest you while waiting in line at the grocery store check-out counter.

On the other hand, if your interest include all of the departments (gardening, food, home, travel and books), and you're interested in all the regions that make up the western United States, then don't hesitate a minute longer. Subscribe. I'm just not that well rounded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish i still subscribed!
I have many years' worth of bound copies of this treasure of a magazine. I lived in Southern California for 3 years in the early 80s and it was a magazine I really became addicted to, even after moving back to the East Coast. I subscribed for years after. When I was married, this helped me so much with home ideas, not to mention fabulous recipes that really, for the most part, never seem dated. The ideas I got from this magazine! It really helped me grow and see things differently. I can't bring myself to get rid of the many years of bound copies that I have. Such a classy publication! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Way to Know Los Angeles
Los Angeles Magazine has a variety of information for everyone. Some of the stores, fashions, etc... might run on the high end price-wise (especially the paid advertisements). But the magazine always offers a great overview of what is going on in Los Angeles. Covering News, Politics, Celebrities, Fashion, Food and Fun things to do. The best issue is the Annual Restaurant issue - this is not to be missed. Restaurants in every price range are listed. Besides the "Dining Out" monthly section, there is "The Top Ten" - plays, music, museums and more to do that month. This magazine is a great way to get to know Los Angeles. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative articles for Bay Area residents
I received San Francisco magazine as a gift a few years ago and at first assumed that it would simply be a way to keep up with restaurant reviews and the like for the city (I live about 35 miles east in the suburbs). After reading a few issues, though, it became clear that a number of the articles are very well written and provide great information and entertainment for residents of San Francisco and beyond. I am thinking of recent articles about Willie Brown (by Joan Walsh), Jim Jones Jr. (by Pamela Feinsilber), and the June 2003 "Green Issue." Some of the articles/features are less relevant to me, but there is always something interesting to read each time a new issue appears in my mailbox. I wish that there was more coverage of restaurants and cultural events in Contra Costa County (where I live), but this is San Francisco magazine after all! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii Desrves Better
Hawaii magazine is the magazine of the state, but they aren't even in the state of Hawaii. Hawaii Magazine is published, edited, and designed all in Southern California by the same folks that publish Cat Fancy Magazine. Hawaii is a unique and magical place, and that magic cannot be captured from an office thousands of miles away. This shows in the pages of the magazine, it's just not "Hawaii". In addition the printing is dull and the colors are flat, the paper is thin and the stories are watered down press releases. Hawaii deserves something better. Try Islands Magazine - it's a great magazine, even if only a portion of it covers Hawaii.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love the Hawaiian Islands, Hawaii magazine is a must!
We go to Hawaii annually and this magazine helps us stay in touch with island happenings, situations, cultural events on the mainland, recipes and all things Hawaiian. It helps ease the homesickness of being away from our 2nd "home". They even have an annual photo contest to enter for the photography buff. (Would I be shamefully plugging that I won the Cultural category in the issue featured to lure you to this review? [Bringing the Islands Home]) ;-)
For Hawaii fanatics, this mags for you...hands down! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you fly fish the Northwest, you'll love this magazine
Beautiful photography and pretty good writing are the hallmarks of this magazine. It focuses on locations rather than on tying, equipment, or other issues. Those of us who live in Washington and Oregon are lucky to have a magazine of this quality dedicated to our area. I get more out of "Northwest Fly Fishing" than any of the half dozen other fly fishing publications I susbcribe to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage Of Our Biggest And Most Beautiful State
I have loved Alaska since the first time I visited the state in 1992. I have been back many times since, and attempt to visit at least once a year. "Alaska" magazine is an excellent way to keep informed about happenings in the state, especially when you can't be there personally. The articles are well written and interesting, and focus, as you would expect, is on the breathtaking outdoors, and outdoor activities. Local history, politics, and environmental issues are also well represented, as are amusing human interest stories.

Because I am a frequent visitor, I also use the advertisements heavily. Normally I don't like ads, but the places and things I have discovered thanks to ads in "Alaska" magazine alone make the price of the subscription worthwhile.

For a witty, entertaining, and educational look at our biggest (and I think most beautiful) state, "Alaska" magazine can't be beat! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Luxurious Living in the Rainy City
Actually, living in Seattle is not always a drizzly experience. Don't tell anyone, but the summers in Seattle are absolutely amazing. Winter isn't too bad either because the climate is fairly mild. I lived there for many years and one of the things I noticed is the "homes." There are unique and beautiful homes all over Seattle that definitely appeal to the aesthetically aware. I have never lived in any area where there were so many unique and artistic designs.

"Seattle Homes and Lifestyles" celebrates the good life, provides a few tasty recipes and explores gardening ideas. They focus on life, style and home. If you live in Seattle or visit quite often, you will find the Life/calendar section useful to keep up with cultural events and celebrations.

A unique feature in this magazine is the "Serving Seattle" section where you can find events and opportunities for giving.

I adore the recipe section, which is always enticing. There are also full-page ads for various neighborhoods with website information and ideas about taking walking tours.

Yes, there is a lot of upscale advertising and "design dreams." If you love gardening, look for the Home/garden planner section. This way, you can keep up with your gardening and get lots of ideas for each season.

This magazine is a beautiful reminder of the good life. Seattle is one of my favorite places to live and work and this is a reminder of a city I'll always love. To me, Seattle will always be home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zento is more than Hawaii
My family and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in March. A friend who had been to the Islands shared his copy of Zento. I was amazed by the content, photos and artistry of this magazine. While I expected to view a tourist publication I found so much more. Zento truly addresses a life style and opened my eyes to a better way to view the world. The articles provide insight into nature, health and spirituality. Of course I can also visit the Islands well informed about various services offered and sights not to be missed. In fact, when I booked my flight the woman (from Hawaii)knew of the magazine and called it a "local favorite". Thank you Zento - let the journey begin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Holding Hawaii in My Hands!
I am amazed that finally the essence of these glorious islands is available in a magazine! For years I have sought out every publication that purported to offer Hawaii to its readers, but they've always fallen short. Zento is like a kaleidoscope - you pick it up and you are transported into the mystery, the magic, the endless scenic wonder that is Hawaii. I keep trying to analyze how Zento pulls this off (and they're getting better and better at it!) and I've concluded that, lucky for us, Zento has discovered and offers a true voice, an authentic expression of Hawaii - one that has never before been available in the magazine format. As one who has made Hawaii my home, I am thrilled to have it presented to the world through the authentic, visionary perspective that is Zento.

2-0 out of 5 stars Amateurish
For me this doesn't convey the true spirit of the islands. It's not very well written and falls on its face when it comes to content. I don't feel it's worth the purchase price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicago Reader
WOW!! I picked up Zento on my first trip to HI in October of last year on the recommendation of the hotel where I was staying. I expected an interesting introduction to the Islands. In reality, what I found was a whole lot more. It's an inspirational well-written magazine with terrific photography and editorial that makes you feel part of what so many find magical about the Islands. These people really know what they're doing! I've yet to be back to HI but I look forward to getting my subscription and every time it arrives it takes me back to when I took my trip. VERY WELL DONE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC MAGAZINE!!!
What a gorgeous magazine that's much more than just a pretty face...With stars such as Russell Crowe, Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon and John Wayne gracing the covers, not to mention the entertaining articles and features, and the unique and beautiful jewelry, clothing, art, furniture, etc., it's no wonder I can't help but read each magazine time and time again. Wouldn't want anything else on my coffee table, and my guests love to read the magazine, too! Can't wait to read the latest Willie Nelson issue that just arrived in the mail!
